  1. Um, I believe it was the opposite. I think they finally moved him to leadoff with Herrmann second and Arcia third after Arcia's promotion. I believe New Britain moved Hicks around 3-5 up until then and he was ok, but much better batting leadoff.
  2. Tangential point, I think the Span trade also potentially guarantees that Jamey Carroll starts somewhere (likely second base) since Gardy doesn't understand Mauer's worth at all batting second and there is certainly no one else to put up there with Revere.
  3. Yeah the OF defense is going to be fairly bad, especially compared to 2012. The Twins now have below average OF defense and no leadoff hitter.
  4. I'd still bat Hicks first. I'm not going to complain about leadoff homeruns while his speed and plate discipline make him a natural for leadoff. At worst, move him to second in the lineup. I think his OBP and speed would be a waste toward the back of the order. Hicks is definitely the leadoff man of the future.
  5. If Revere starts turning in .738, .734, .739 OPS (three out of the last 4 years for Bourn, who is really consistent) then we can start comparing him to Bourn and start worrying about his value. However, IF Revere does that and IF he deservedly sticks around (because the other OF options for Twins fall apart), then who the hell cares about paying him $14 million through his arbitration years (2.5, 4.5, 7) naturally? He will be worth it. If, however, he doesn't top .700 or even regresses in even one of those seasons, then it will have been wise not to extend his contract. The risk is bad.
  6. The market is weird. I don't think it is that unusual to have overpaying early and then after the meetings, the market resets. Feldman got RIDICULOUSLY lucky, given that he isn't very good. Marcum has an injury concern as well. The Twins could still overpay Jackson and Marcum at $25 million a year combined. If Gorzelanny can be had for a MiL contract, that would be nice.
  7. I still have to believe Boston is a potential suitor, if there is any truth to their pursuit of Mauer. Morneau, to me, is likely best kept until the trade deadline and then he must be dealt. There is no way they can just let him walk and there is no way I would offer him multiple years.
  8. It isn't clear to me that Chris Herrmann needs to be playing every day at this point. Now, I understand that he greatly underwhelmed in September last year, but such limited time says very little. I don't think Herrmann is going to ever really be an everyday player anyway, so why not utilize him has Doumit-light as the 2nd catcher (allowing Doumit's time behind the plate to drop at least 20-25% please) and 5th OF? Even if the offensive numbers are DEAD middle between Butera and Doumit, that is a big improvement. And the defensive drop from Butera to Herrmann is at least significantly made up by the gain from Doumit to Herrmann back there. Herrmann ideally also means that the Twins also have a LH bench bat (even if he just walks) that they could actually use in PH role.
  9. Haha. Exactly. I can't believe that there is ANY debate about this. I would be nice to him and offer something which I know is stupid, but a long-term AAA deal to work with pitchers. Not as a coach, but as an actual catcher. If there was any way that this could be done, it would be highly idea.
  10. That is not a bad idea at all if he is healthy (is he?). That might be 200 good combined innings.
  11. While the defensive metrics might lead to exaggerated figures, I agree generally with the basic point that Doumit caught too many games last year. That's the problem when you have non-MLB players on your roster like Drew Butera. That is why I was bullish on Herrmann last year to get promoted and play in AAA. That is why I would like the Twins to either go with Herrmann or spend 1-2 million on somebody other than Butera (this would only really amount to around a $1 million difference in salary).
  12. That contract WOULD probably guarantee Marcum, but they can probably get him for less. Perhaps even a 1-year 9 million dollar deal with a 11 million team option and million dollar buyout. Greinke is going to get that minimally somewhere else. 6/120 and you might get him. Pavano needs to never be in a Twins uniform again.
  13. I have a suspicion that Greinke, Sanchez, and Dempster all want the NL. Dodgers, Nationals (yes), Phillies, Cubs, Reds, and Cardinals are all more likely than the Twins to get any of those three. And that's just the NL. Haren, Jackson, and Marcum are tier 1,2,3 pitchers, respectively, and the Twins may not get any of them. That would be very frustrating. Myers and Blanton would not make me happy as the only two additions.
  14. Hicks, Arcia, Benson, Roberts, Kepler, and Buxton all are better projected players in MLB. Revere is arb eligible in 2014 and won't be expensive at all until at least 2016. So extending . . . why??????????
  15. You just hurt Mastro's feelings.
  16. That's pretty good there. I would say something like 13 for Jackson, 9 for Marcum, and perhaps a couple minor league deals.
  17. Great article. Should have been a way to keep him, but at least for him he is going to an organization that, aside from the Strassburg debacle, appears to care about winning. That team is loaded.
  18. Yes, if the Twins find themselves needing him as a starting OF in 2014 it is simply a bad thing. I like the guy and all a lot, but there is no long-term future with him. Hopefully he improves enough to add to his trade value (same for Parmelee, because neither are long-term starters for the Twins).
  19. 1. Sano 2. Hicks 3. Arcia 4. Meyer 5. Rosario 6. Buxton 7. Berrios 8. Kepler 9. Gibson 10. Herrmann 11. Harrison 12. Roberts
  20. By the way, I wouldn't be opposed to a trade for another Indiana Mr. Baseball in Clayton Richard from the Padres. Hermsen, Swarzak, and Morales would likely bring that about. Or some other trade configuration.
  21. In the meantime, sign Marcum and Sanchez and go balls to the wall. Damn it.
  22. Meyer is going to be the real deal, so that is not at all coloring my trepidation here. I just don't like the idea of giving up on the next two years (UNLESS a complete youth movement is in store, because that would be very interesting to watch--in the next two years, Parmelee, Hicks, Arcia, Herrmann, and Benson add interest). Anyway, Meyer was a ridiculous beast in HS, striking out more than 2 an inning his senior year. I am definitely excited about his future and he is clearly the best pitching prospect in the system. With a healthy Gibson and a quick-moving Berrios, the Twins could have a remarkable 1-2-3 by 2015.
  23. Well, well, well, they finally did it. What this means, clearly, is that the team doesn't care about 2013 or 2014 and is waiting until 2015 when the top 6-10 prospects are either going to be rookies or second-year players. SOOOO . . . I would definitely want this to be blow-up central with AT LEAST Morneau dealt (Boston???) as well, if not Willingham and others. I think the trade is ok right now, but 2013 is going to be REALLY bad.
  24. I agree with you this time, John! At the very least I would wait until trade deadline. This is just such a rare occurrence for the Twins (and I don't trust Plouffe to repeat).
  25. Good article. Some terrifying possibilities out there (Liriano and Butera back with the Twins, Casilla and Valencia playing in MLB anywhere). I know the Mauer trade isn't happening, but again, I would love to see that guy play in that park. Good god.
