  1. The Victorino contract? Why? The guy is one year removed from an .847 OPS and a near 20/20 season. And Victorino is roughly an average defender, I believe. And lord knows that the Red Sox clubhouse needs a guy like Victorino who is very highly regarded as a good guy and leader.
  2. Aren't they both 3/39? Those are great deals, in my view, for solid guys. The Red Sox are playing smart this time around by keeping deals under 4 years. Those are not crazy dollars spent.
  3. Better be the Indians. It would be a joke and a half for the Twins to sign this guy, sorry.
  4. Greinke will go to the Dodgers for something ridiculous. Sanchez will go to the Tigers for something ridiculous. Josh Hamilton will go to the Mariners for something ridiculous. I wish these two things would happen soon to clear away some of the mess.
  5. Don't they have to wait a full year since Gausman signed before they can trade him? Or is that wrong? Bundy isn't going anywhere, so I don't think this trade is either. Schoop and Rodriguez, maybe? I would be happy tossing Hermsen in with Morneau.
  6. Let's hope it works or else Jamey Carroll will be up there (Gardy would never move Mauer there, no matter how much sense it would make).
  7. Yeah, I really find the love for him around here bizarre. 3 or 4 years!!!???
  8. There is also a way to spend money to make prospects and the Twins don't do that either. Signing somebody doesn't mean you have to keep him for the duration of the contract. No one is asking for the Twins to mimic the Cubs and Soriano here.
  9. As usual, I like the content and tone of Jim Crikket's posts the best!
  10. I wouldn't push it at all. I guess two years guaranteed for a walking injury concern is not terrible. A Pavano-esque deal then. I would prefer a 1/10 with a 12 million option and 1 million buyout the best though. Or let the White Sox throw 4 years at him and watch that fail miserably.
  11. 8 consecutive seasons with 30+ starts. Nationals getting away with theft at this point. I am not sure how this is a "make-good contract" at all. It looks like he wants the chance to headline the FA pitching class next year.
  12. I don't understand why the Twins would be seeking a 3B unless it was a splash signing like Youk or Reynolds.
  13. Just saw it on MLB network. Now, maybe, pretty please, can people stop freaking about what Scott Feldman means to the market? Also, the Nationals are going to dominate for years.
  14. By the way, the expectation of runners wildly taking advantage of Revere this year did fall short. He performed better than expected.
  15. Although, I don't refer to 24-year-olds as "kids" (imagine if the media referred to the pre-24 soldiers in our wars as "kids") I agree with Riverbrian. Some of you seem to want to just get rid of him, which is the opposite end of the spectrum from extending for no reason. Both are ridiculous.
  16. What do you think of the notion of incentive-laden contracts . . . for pretty much everybody? For instance, if I were a part of the uber-wealthy aristocratic class of owners, I would employ a particular approach for FA signings, and I don't really think I would like to budge from it. Consider a free agent whose average value is X. There are teams who are going to pay more than that and teams who would try to pay less. I would take that average as a baseline and include incentives over the likely amount of the top payers. Does this really seem like a bad idea? Take Edwin Jackson. Let's say the average is 3/39. Add in 9 million in incentives over those three years and it could, based on performance mean a 3/48 contract (which, right now, I am assuming is at least 5 million over the top payer now, but that is adjustable). The incentives would be likely three-tiered, with the bottom one very attainable, the second one based on above-average performance for the players, and the third based on great or peak performance. The general idea is to 1. minimize risk, 2. get players, and 3. reward great performance and be glad for it by paying more. Payroll issues are not reducible to amount spent, but rather how that amount matches performance. Incentives provide for this. Just wanted a different kind of conversation and thought this was a good idea. I know "guaranteed money" is a big deal, but I think there may be something to this approach.
  17. Absolutely not unless it was for Logan Darnell and Pat Dean or something. Gordon is not good, but I wouldn't write him off completely.
  18. At this point, given 2013 is very likely a bust, I would prefer the obvious trade of Justin Morneau for another Meyer type prospect at A/AA level. The Twins could likely just go for a stop gap RF or even a LH platoon with Mastro. That stop gap, if decent enough (not looking up names at the moment), could also be traded for some low level medium prospect at the deadline and that would make room for Hicks and Arcia. I don't like trading Willingham just yet. Next offseason would be ideal.
  19. Thanks for the update. I don't mean to put too much into the winter leagues, but in a good amount of extended time, Colabello is really dominating. With the removal of Span from the roster and the assumption that Butera, Mastro, and some middle infielder are on the bench, it might be worth giving Colabello a serious look for the last bench spot as a RH bat.
  20. FYI: Benson at 156, Michael at 219, Wimmers at 264, and . . . .Luke Bard at 304.
  21. Meyer has moved to 71 now. If Rosario sticks at second base, that ranking is not totally inaccurate.
  22. I have hopes that he can essentially be the RH Scott Diamond, but I am worried about that lack of velocity and bad K numbers. I don't really trust him as a legitimate rotation piece in the future, but 2013 in Rochester will be telling.
  23. Regardless, $25 million for Jackson, Marcum, and minor league flyers for one or more guys seems pretty doable. Sanchez would be nicer than either, of course.
  24. Also, even given the obviously differences between Revere and Span (it still alarms me that people don't see these differences--the Twins, in a smarter management world, should just give up and bat Mauer leadoff), the Span deal was a bit of a reach at the time and certainly could legitimately be called a bad risk. That he recovered from the concussion problems made that deal good (as does this trade . . . . pretty please). Again, there is no reason to risk Blackburnesque dollar amounts (sound different than Spanesque, doesn't it?) in order to save, what, $3-5 million bucks over the controlled years? If Revere progresses and puts up some Bourn-like numbers, the pay he earns will be WORTH IT. If if doesn't perform that well (which is more likely) then they haven't committed to him long-term and will be saving $8-12 million or more. I would really hope that Revere isn't starting in 2014, because that will mean bad things for the Twins concerning the development of better players like Hicks, Arcia, and even Benson. Regardless, by 2015, I will be SHOCKED if Revere is starting for the Twins. The time to trade him will probably be pre-2014 deadline.
  25. Yeah, I definitely see your point on this.
