  1. All I know is, if a management team can turn someone like Josh Hamilton around, don't hesitate to hire them. The Rangers have made mistakes, yes. We all have. But unlike the Twins, they don't wallow in the muck that the mistakes made for years at a time. The whole "oh that move was a mistake, so I'd better not make other moves ... maybe if we just wait another year that mistake will fix itself" is ridiculous and hopefully the Twins can retire that mindset forever.
  2. mlb.tv is a separate corporation from Major League Baseball. mlb.tv is essentially licensed content to stream from the MLB. This means the MLB is putting MLB ownership interests before the interests of mlb.tv. If the owners owned mlb.tv, things would be different.
  3. No clue. Having an education is a good thing, and it's not like they are hiring these guys right out of college. These are experienced people we are talking about who have proven track records. Keith Law is Ivy League educated too, by the way. He certainly has benefited from the same things he is griping about others having benefited from. Frankly, this rant from him seems to be coming out of left field.
  4. A lot of people say that but it's not true. 2015 as a starter: 4.43 ERA, 7.9 K/9, .772 OPS against. 2015 as a reliever: 2.87 ERA, 10.6 K/9, .697 OPS against. His 2015 ERA as a starter made him the worst starter on the team. His ERA as a reliever was 2nd best on the team. He had a sub.3.00 FIP as a reliever. Moving May to the pen in 2015 was a good move. Was it a good move to keep him there in 2016? No idea. He certainly did himself no favors with his control problems.
  5. The Twins probably would have lost 1-0. Knoblauch had done that fake-out move a few times during the regular season, but never to that much success. Credit Chuck for that WS title.
  6. This seems to be Law's 'story of the day' -- all these pesky Ivy League guys in front offices. Law's headline today: "Every major front-office hire of the last 13 months has been male, white, and likely Ivy League. Mike Hazen is the latest. It's on MLB to fix it."
  7. Levine looks like a good steal for the Twins along the lines of the Mike Zimmer steal by the Vikings. He looks to me like he should have been a GM a long time ago. The Twins seem to be on the right path.
  8. I like your sarcasm. Maybe you're just more optimistic than I am. I can tell you that when I talk to people who consider themselves big baseball fans and I start throwing around any advanced metric they have no clue what I'm talking about. I have met exactly one person in my life who can talk about advanced metrics at all. That's why I find myself on sites such as this where I can talk to people at a similar level to myself. Hopefully everyone will reach a point where they know more about a topic than what they see on television. We're at that point with baseball. A new broadcasting team won't really change that. Even if an analytical team was put up there, we'd disagree with them half the time. We disagree with each other at least half the time!
  9. I would say that 95% of fans don't notice that things being said are "wrong." The Twins would be smart to not pay attention to the baseball nerd minority.
  10. Cubs: - Top tier manager - Hard working front office staff that get along with one another and have specialized roles - Lots of youth (some home grown, some not) - A nice share of upper tier free agent signings Isn't this the model every GM not named Terry Ryan has talked about forever?
  11. I disagree with some of the statements here about how the broadcast team is terrible and this being something the Twins must fix. The Twins have bigger problems that they should be spending time on. Dick and Bert can do the job and the point of the broadcast team has never been to cater to diehard baseball nerds such as us. We feel we know more than them, so what? We're a minority.
  12. May fans are choosing to ignore how wild May was last year. 10 wild pitches and 2 hit batters in 42 innings is terrible. Stretch that to a full season and you're looking at Sam Deduno-level control with a worse ERA. May's career in Minnesota will last around 2 more months if he does not start throwing the ball over the plate. I'm sorry but that's the reality of the situation.
  13. Seems like the Twins are hoping to follow the Indians blueprint rather than the Cubs blueprint. Maybe that's smart to build from a template from another AL team. Both clubs hired high profile, top tier, and expensive managers, by the way.
  14. The grade for May is generous. He isn't performing anywhere near where fans expected and the team needed.
  15. Right. The Twins had Meyer, May, a very exciting Berrios who seemed like he would be ready at any moment, and an overachieving Duffey. It really felt like the better players were being blocked. Unfortunately none of that really went as planned. Meyer is gone, May is probably a bullpen arm from now on (though the jury is still very out on that), Berrios has had growing pains and Duffey's reality of not being a starter has set in. Hughes, Nolasco, Milone, Correia, Pelfrey, etc., perhaps weren't blocking as much as it felt like they were. Simply no one has worked out, veteran or rookie. I don't think getting some veteran help will necessarily mean the team is repeating some old mistakes. The mistakes were the long contracts.
  16. True, and blocking was a big problem over the past couple of years. But right now, who would be blocked? Berrios, if he's ready. Who else? There are too many spots available to fill with internal talent.
  17. Mediocre FAs can work. Just keep the contracts short. Mediocre is a huge upgrade for this team.
  18. Nothing is guaranteed in baseball. There is no good reason to put off the overhaul of the pitching staff. Fostering a youth movement is great, and believe me this will happen even if rent-a-pitchers are acquired in the meantime, but youth is not the only piece of the puzzle. In baseball, as in life, there is no other option but to go full throttle with your goals. The only danger here is mucking up the expenses (payroll) -- and again this is the same dilemma we all face in life. Believe me there are ways to solve both problems that do not involve doing nothing.
  19. First let me say that Law is a very smart guy and worthy of respect. But this does not mean he is the biblical source for information on minor league players. Would I trust Twins-specific writers to give the best information on Twins players? Absolutely. Law, is, first and foremost, a writer. And he is a very good writer. However, the common notion that Law watches a lot of games in person is a myth. The idea that he travels and watches players play is a myth. He has access to a lot of film at ESPN, sure. In 2007, he was denied access to the Baseball Writers Association because he does not attend enough games in person. (They later reversed this decision based on the volume of his writing and his respect among fans and other writers). Remember he has also turned down legitimate scouting job offers where he would actually have to travel and see players and make personnel decisions. He has a good gig now where he can watch film. He certainly has a huge audience which he does not want to lose. But remember that the films he watches are likely edited to show players at their finest before he gets his eyeballs on them. He simply cannot be trusted as a primary source since he isn't a primary source. Law's strength is that he has access to watch film of such a huge number of minor league players, and those he can't see he can talk to scouts about. He's a journalist on the inside and has written about nearly everybody. He provides a lot of value and is the top secondary source out there.
  20. Don't forget the great prospect handbooks published by the original poster and others. I put more stock in what the crew here publishes than I do anything else when it comes to the minor league players. If Polanco solidifies himself at SS at any point in the next two years, make no mistake about it: Gordon will be blocked if this is all he can play. Sure, the Twins way was to not make that a consideration (Sano never learned another position in the minors, nor did Polanco) but the next group isn't likely to be so rigid and show such a lack of foresight. I had completely forgotten that Dozier started out his major league career at SS. And it looks like he was essentially the same player at SS that he is at 2B. So much for all the stuff that is written about how he could never play SS....
  21. Dozier has more than enough arm strength. He has to be within the top 3 guys on the team as far as upper body strength is concerned. If there's an issue with moving him -- and I don't know if there is one -- it would be with his throwing accuracy and speed. At worst he would be another Sano over there, and I doubt he would be that bad.
  22. My theory is that if he is given days off every week throughout the season -- 30-40 days off -- he'll be fine. So I think he can do 120-130 games without injury as long as he gets the days off. Play him more than that, and he'll get injured and give you the same amount of games.
  23. I agree that, at this time, releasing Mauer isn't the right option, even if his contract is ignored. He brings enough to the table to keep around. However, it is essential that the Twins give him some rest. Whether that means platooning him or simply giving him days off it doesn't matter to me. The Twins need to keep him on a pace to play 120-130 games in a year, because if they don't he'll end up injured and that's all they'll get out of him anyway. This will also mean he'll be terrible for a stretch before the Twins realize he's too banged up to play.
  24. This is hands down the best community-driven Twins site on the web. The Vikings side could use more activity and it will grow with time. The Wild and Wolves are a bit past my days in Minnesota so I don't follow them, but there is no reason this can't be the place for fans of both. One question. Though users can use their Twins Daily accounts on the other sites, there is still a bit of a registration hoopla one has to do in order to post on sites you didn't initially sign up on. Why not make this completely seamless? You register for one, you can post anywhere. One registration and you are automatically a member of everything on the site. I will certainly be blogging for the Twins and possibly the Vikings in the future. Great thanks to Seth and all the others who made this place an open community where everyone can contribute and express their opinions. I was once a regular on 'another' Twins forum where the comments can get a bit disrespectful. I assumed this was because the site was lightly moderated and simply accepted it as a place where people could freely express themselves. After some time I learned that the people who were disrespectful were all of the moderators. At that point I realized it wasn't a place where people can express themselves at all, but it was a place where the moderators were bullying people. Once I figured that out I left and never came back. Twins Daily is a site where I know this would never happen.
