  1. Falvey has been hired, he just had not officially started yet. Very likely they are relying at least a little bit on opinions from the staff beneath them. If Molitor does not like a guy, I doubt they would force anyone upon him, and it would not be difficult for Molitor to argue convincingly against a flawed player like Walker.
  2. I read somewhere that the MLB is getting on the Dodger's case about not paying their bills. They want them to start paying off their debts. I'm not sure what this means for Dozier going to the Dodgers. As he is cheap, I would think it helps put him ahead of the other options. However, if this ultimatum is stronger than I suspect it is, they may not be able to sign anybody this year.
  3. Great stuff. The Twins *must* improve defensively. We talk all the time about pitching and catching, but the Twins defense is atrocious. It won't matter who is pitching if the Twins defense remains the same.
  4. One can definitely show causation, for anything. Research does a body good. Thanks for providing my daily dose of nihilism, though. Now I don't have to crack open the politics section of the newspaper.
  5. You can freely post this argument if you research Hunter's career and can't find the pattern that many people suspect is there. Right now there is no proof one way or the other that Hunter made a difference. There are opinions on both sides. If you are interested in changing the other side's opinion, do the research. The fact that you are using this argument suggests to me that there is plenty of evidence that Hunter has made a difference not just with the Twins but with other teams, and you simply are throwing this out there to try to poison the well.
  6. I love the qualifying offer changes. I'm sure someone here will write up a summary soon.
  7. I think I (and many commenters) lost sight of things a little bit. The Twins Daily staff is working to build a positive relationship with the new front office and with that in mind wrote a positive piece about what they have done so far. This isn't wrong, certainly what has been done so far is not negative. The viewpoint from us fans is different, and as we a group we feel like "not much of consequence" has been done yet. We would rather wait and see, because sure the moves so far are good but they're not enough. We all forgot to consider that the positioning is different between the author of the piece and those of us who read the piece. I think this is probably on both of us (the author should have been able to predict our reaction just as much as we should have realized why he wanted to write it this way). A different word choice for the title would have made all the difference. Lessons learned for everybody.
  8. The Twins need a player on the team who can mentor. Preferably more than one. If Napoli is the guy, the Twins should go for it. This would almost certainly be a 1-year deal, so no damage will be done. Platoon him with Mauer at 1B and platoon him with whoever the DH ends up being. This will keep people fresh, which is a key thing to consider for the aging Mauer. As for all of the skepticism that Hunter helped the team in 2015, look at the team that Hunter left to join the Twins in 2015 and their subsequent record. Look for some quotes by the players of that team as to the reason for their drop. If you think Hunter and 2015 are flukes, examine more evidence. I think you will find that it was no fluke. And then hopefully we can go on to argue something a little more interesting.
  9. The decision on Walker was made during the season. If you remember, a reporter asked Molitor why Walker and others were not called up when the rosters expanded. Molitor's strange response was, "Well, we don't know who will be on the team next year." Walker's release was planned some time ago, so his release probably has nothing to do with a glut of players at the position.
  10. I am much more impressed by millennials than I am my generation -- Gen X. I imagine you are Gen X as well. Gen X has been the ultimate generation of incompetence. Our parent are still running things for the most part, and the next generation to run things will be the millennials. Sad but true. Gen X is going to push things backwards before the millennials come of age to fix it.
  11. There wasn't much choice. The major league team had more holes than George Washington's teeth. Bad management.
  12. Well, aren't those true things? It's not unfair to point out things that the guy actually said and did. True, it's not the whole picture with Hunter, he has done some good things too. And of course now that he isn't going through the stress of competing he isn't likely to lose his temper and act like an arse. Oh, and you forgot to mention his homophobia.
  13. I said a few times over the past couple of years that Ryan's strength is scouting the minors. I don't think this is a demotion at all. I think this is Ryan going back to what he does best. It's a smart move. And, sure, no one in their right minds is giving Terry Ryan a GM job.
  14. I'm glad Ryan is back doing what he does best. This is the job he is great at and he will do good, if not great, things for the Phillies. Though of course you know I'm going to say something negative. Ryan made a big deal about retiring ten years ago. The narrative was that he was reluctantly pried out of retirement due to his replacement's incompetence. Logic would dictate that he would now simply go back to his retirement since the job he was begged to come back to do is gone. Taking another job is evidence that he decided to come back to the GM role because he did not like retirement and not because the Twins pleaded with him to come back. Ryan pulled a Jay Leno on the Twins.
  15. Exactly. Let's see where things are in a month before we rate anything.
  16. Meh. Ryan would have picked up a catcher too. It's a necessity at the moment since they don't have one. Ryan may have even picked up the same catcher. We need to keep it real. As of yet, the Twins haven't done anything that will make a major difference.
  17. Strong start? The pitching staff is still completely unaddressed and that's where the problem is. They don't even have a coach yet. The Twins *had* to get a catcher as Suzuki is leaving. Do these guys really believe that the whole problem the Twins have with pitching was the catcher? That seems naive. Also, releasing Plouffe rather than trading him is not what I call a strong move. Sure, they'd have to eat some salary to trade him. A trade is still better.
  18. These are minimal, practically symbolic, roles. Perhaps "culture of winning" was a poor word choice but this isn't a big deal.
  19. They are not big on defense over there. His 5.89 ERA put him in the top half of the pitchers in the league. He will be back at AAA next year, so we may yet see him again if things remain disastrous.
  20. He was all or nothing in that if a move wasn't going to put them over the top, he did not bother to make the move unless his back was to the wall. This means that the only moves he made over the past few years were to fill the gigantic holes. There were no marginal moves made that could have pushed the team towards the middle.
  21. Hunter - Single-handedly made the 2015 team not embarrassing. Was a great defender and a great hitter in his prime. Cuddyer - Went on a legendary tear which brought a team on the verge of elimination into the playoffs. Hawkins - The smartest and most level-headed ball player I have ever heard speak. These signings are less about ability and more about attitude. There is a lot to like about this. But we must bear in mind that the contact these special assistants have with the major league team is limited. They are with them in spring training but not so much after the season starts. Otherwise they are helping players in the minors and in camps. Even at that level they're not around all the time.
  22. Sure, it's a "weak" strategy if your team is already in the middle of the pack. The Twins are coming off their worst record since being in Minnesota. A move to the middle of the pack is a huge leap and one I would be very happy about. Ryan was very much into this "all or nothing" approach and we ended up with five years of the nothing. A year or two in the middle would be a huge turnaround for this team.
  23. I'm unsure what you're responding to. I support trading Dozier. Dozier's power surge last year is proof that power in a vacuum is pointless.
  24. No, I'm simply responding to a long-winded post that was trying to use logic to defend a point that wasn't logical. This is sports, not chemistry. So the person he was responding to wasn't logical, big deal. The response wasn't logical either. Let people have their opinions. It's not like "compete in 3 years" hasn't been said by hundreds of different people over the past few years.
  25. Depends on what you mean by "compete." The Twins can be very disruptive to their division even if they aren't a team that can make the playoffs. I would call that competing. The bulk of the Twins schedule is against the division, so starting small and learning how to win games in the Central division would be a huge first step. In the 00s the Twins dominated the division (and interleague, thanks in part to the dome) but often struggled against the East and West. If the Twins can put up respectable divisional records, they'll be "competing" very well even if they're not making the playoffs for another couple of years. This also means that the recipe for success (or, at least, playoff berths) isn't as far away as we might think. (Next year, no. But so what?) Cleveland still looks like a team on the rise, and the Royals are fighters. But the other two teams have flaws that could be exploited with the right lineup. Finishing in the middle of the division instead of at the bottom would be monstrously successful and I would call that competing.
