  1. I never said Santana will be a career .319 hitter, in contention for the batting crown year in and year out. But the difference between Santana's career .319 average and Escobar's .255 is quite large. As well as perceived upside.
  2. I don't know that this has been settled. Escobar, even with the year he had has a career .255 average with a .666 OPS. His BABIP this year was .336 as well versus a career .313.
  3. It seems to me Gardy would play a good defensive SS that hit .250 (all singles) over a guy that was OK to bad defensively that would hit .300 with some pop. Let's say the .300 guy is Santana and both players get 600 AB. The .300 hitter will get 30 more hits and 10-12 of those are probably extra base hits (on top of more doubles and HR overall). It seems unlikely to me that the improved defense from the .250 hitter would not make up for that difference, say 50 more total bases.
  4. I think that used to be the case more in the past. It seems like teams are using the fall league now for rehab of good pitchers as well. Alex Meyer last year for the Twins for example. Yesterdays game had Archie Bradley on the River Rafters team and Tajuan Walker for the other team. Buxton went 2-4 with a 2B. Eddie 1-4 with a 2B.
  5. If your opinion about Santana's defense is valid (I have no idea because I haven't seen him enough at SS), then I put the 2014 CF debacle on Terry Ryan, not Gardy. Unless of course Terry has also concluded he will never be a short stop. In which case, $#^&.
  6. "and the rest of the Twins position player’s athleticism, to roam their outfield". Sounds like a bit of ying and yang between the big club and minors:
  7. My thought was always that gardy stressed defense too much at catcher and ss. I would expect pinto to get more reps at catcher and the sky won't fall. Maybe, just maybe the offense will offset the defense.
  8. One of the many reasons why Gardy was let go, no doubt.
  9. I think that type of coach would be great for Hicks, but would probably give it some time to reach his own conclusion.
  10. I agree. Give Hicks another shot out of spring training. If he fails as a starter, move to your 4th OF with occassional platoon oportunities. Or just outright platoon LF. I would definitely platoon him over cut him. He has proved to be a .750 OPS guy against lefties. He has to provide at least average defense in a corner, which would be a huge win for us.
  11. I totally agree he has been misjudged and I think projecting Hicks as a 4th OF until he proves otherwise is fine. A starter is priority #1 for me though.
  12. He hit .250, .350 OBP, and a .650 OPS in September. It was a step up from .184/322./546 earlier in the year. That doesn't scream starting LF....but I don't expect him to have a .750-800 OPS overnight.
  13. No extra base hits yet, but seeing Buxton hit about .300 is very encouraging.
  14. In 22 games, after an .871 OPS in 42 at AA.....yes. He was in double A as a 22 year old and more than held his own. His issue is proving he is an MLB player and I think he needs to do it up here. He had a little momentum at the end of last year.
  15. I don't think he has much more to prove in the minors. 2012 - .844 OPS in AA 2013 - He was in the big leagues all but 22 games, at the tail end of a disasterous season and had a .650 OPS 2014 - After being sent down, he had an OPS of .871 in AA and .740 in AAA.
  16. I completely agree about putting him somewhere defensively. I hope that a new manager takes a look at him and gives him a shot at SS. He could be a real asset to this team at SS, even if his offensive number fall from .319 to .280-.290.
  17. Hicks OPS of .606 is in line with Shafer's .621 and Mastro's .564. I woud rather see Hicks in this role with some AB's here or there than a journeyman. At least Hicks has a shot at playing his way to a starting role. Agree with the assessment that a 4th OF is a floor. He could platoon out there as well. Although I hope he can prove to be more.
  18. We got Nishi, so I am guesing your analysis had us top 5 in Asia as well.
  19. BTW, this franchise did offer Pujols 10 years and $220M. Which would have been a terrible deal from the day it was signed. They really got lucky.
  20. I agree. This Cardinals thing is funny, like a new WWJD
  21. I think Hicks right now is in the range of many of the 4th OF's we have had. OPS-wise. He should be able to play all 3 OF positions with a few reps and provide now at least an average bat against lefties.. An .800 OPS is a bit of a high standard. A league average corner OF is not that high.
  22. It seemed like the Cuban guys were referenced a lot more and the only Asian player up until a few posts ago was Chen.
  23. Based on his manager, he has been tardy a few times and is never among the first there. He also showed up one day without knowing who the starting pitcher was for the other team.
