  1. I agree. Sometimes things get over complicated. We have a manager spot open. He is the best available manager, nobody is debating this. $5M is not going to break the bank, block other moves, and he isn't going to be miss time with tommy john. Sign the guy.
  2. Mauer and payroll are part of any topic. Those are the rules.
  3. Outside of about 1-2 horrible contracts, no team is taking on Mauers contract. Maybe straight up for A-Rod. That was the bigger point, I believe.
  4. I agree, short of hiring him some are going to say it was a charade. Myself included. But we literally have no reason to not request an interview. And I think if we request an interview and he has no interest, Dave St. Peter or Terry will let us all know. We should at least be able to separate out we were never going to hire him from I think we were never going to hire him.
  5. Some truth here, but I am guessing Terry knows what the budget is for a manager and Maddon is clearly going to be in the $5M range. So I think Terry knew from the second he heard that this signing was not going to happen. Just my personal opinion. If it comes out that we did not even reach out for an interview....can we speculate that the Twins were not going to meet his salary demands? It seems really unlikely that we called around and ruled him out based on his reputation.
  6. I can't argue with you. i think this managerial search has been a charade all along. The job is going to Molitor and Terry needed to act like he was open to outsiders to pacify everyone. I for one think Terry's initial reaction was anger when he found out Maddon was available. Now he has to act interested in him as well. He is now conducting "due dilligence" on him....to determine what exacty? That he is the best candidate available?
  7. He is my first, second, and third choice. I would also like to note that for the cost of a good middle reliever (difference between Maddon's $5M and the $2M Molitor may make), the Twins ownership could dispel some of the cheap owner talk for awhile. Heck, might even make MN a destination of sorts for free agents, within reason. That $3M will go farther in this coach search than it will on the free agent market. Not saying they will do it, but it seems a compelling case could be made.
  8. Absolutely spot on post. Terry is doing his "due dilligence" to determine what? To see if Maddon is a better option than Molitor or Doug? We all know. Ultimately, I am not trying to get too excited here. I don't think we are paying the guy $5M a year. Period. I would love to be surprised. But I am not looking to be let down.
  9. Of course he has a choice. But the difference is a 5m manager is 3 to 4 million more than what molitor is likely to get. A big free agent pitcher may be 20 million more than a replacement type signing Even still most agree we are not going to pony up, as the article alluded to
  10. I actually agree on paper that he might actually want the job. Part of this is a money grab, certainly. But I also think part of it is timing. I think Maddon is looking out in the future and he sees a pipeline that is not as strong as it has been for the Rays. He is highly regarded but that can change in a year or two with a .500 team. The Twins and Cubs to me would seem like two places where he could go and it would appear he "turned things around". Admittedly, the Cubs are roughly on par talent-wise and will pay him more money. That is likely where he ends up. I don't see the Twins dropping $5M on a manager, even though I think it would be a great move.
  11. I think another explanation is out there too, and the article alluded to it. $$$$$$$$$
  12. Seems to me paying the guy 3-4M more than whoever we sign is a good investment. Basically what Jared Burton was owed.
  13. Our personal opinions are exactly identical. I find the fact that we are going to bring in additional candidates now as a side show. I think he wanted Molitor all along and unless Molitor seems completely uninterested and/or unwilling to commit to a multi-year thing, I think he will get the job This is a cherade that goes on in business as well.
  14. Do you not believe his smarts played a role in his career? He was 30th or so all time in steals but I am guessing he was nowhere near the 30th fastest guy. Slugged .500 a few seasons. He does not look like a guy to me that is going to put up those numbers.
  15. Pressing need? I doubt it. But if we sign a couple guys and are facing a tough decision - nobody will claim the guy. That was my point. It would be pretty proposterous to me a team would claim him and either have him as a starting OF this year OR a 4th OF that gets no at bats, which is what he needs. A ton of at bats.
  16. I think the numbers he put up as a player without being as physically gifted as other HOF types (think Ricky Henderson)....shows me he has a good mind. Played basically every position other than catcher and stole over 500 bases without burning speed.
  17. Terry always leaves the door open....but I find it unlikely another serious candidate is added at this point.
  18. I can't argue that our 40 man is riddled with guys I would not mind being plucked by another team. But I think a few of those names will be dropped shortly....Nunez and at least one of Parmelee and CC for starters. We will cut some folks and need to make room for any signings and/or young prospects eligible for the next rule 5....Sano, Meyer? not sure where those guys sit but players more likely to be grabbed. Most of those guys are big league depth though.....not neccesarily kept for upside.
  19. In addition, you can scream at a guy before his at bat....but when he is in the batters box I don't see how that is going to help him get a hit. If a correlation exists between yelling at an ump and winning, we would have one of the better teams these last few years. It seems to me that being more thoughtful about your lineup, defensive shifting, platooning, in game switches, etc. will help the team more than yelling at someone.
  20. Yeah, they flashed their record when leading after 6 innings. Something like 65-9. Crazy.
  21. I agree with the analysis, my pick is Lovullo, Molitor, then Doug. But I think Molitor gets the job
  22. The question was "what are the odds of these guys making it to Target Field next year". Seth responded: Personal opinion and obviously a lot of variables, but here is my uqick thoughts on percent likelihood they play in the big leagues in 2015: Byron Buxton - 80% (doesn't have to be on 40 man roster for another year) Eddie Rosario - 80% (will be added to 40 man in November) Max Kepler - 20% (2nd of 4 option years) Taylor Rogers - 45% (doesn't have to be added to the 40 man roster for another year) Jason Adam - 25% (could be added to 40 man roster in November) Zack Jones - 50% (doesn't have to be on 40 man roster for another year) Jake Reed - 35% (doesn't have to be on the 40 man roster for 3 more years or so) I guess I misunderstood the point of adding the 40 man consideration next to each player. It seemed like that was a huge factor.
  23. I expect Meyer to improve his walk rate, last year was a bit of an outlier anyway. But I do think the years of Twins having control pitchers without good/power stuff has skewed our view of what the walk rate needs to be. For Liam Hendricks or Nick Blackburn, yes you can't walk many batters. But when you have 10+ K's per 9 innings like Meyer...you have to put it in context. Additionally, Meyer's HR rate was .39 and .69 per 9 the last two years and his hit rate was 7.7 and 8 per 9 as well.
  24. I see no risk with dumping Kepler off the 40 man right now. That would only expose him to the Rule 5 draft I believe. A team that picks him in the rule 5 would have to add him to their big league team. He is 21 and coming off an injury riddled 100 games at high A, where he posted a .726 OPS. Seems like a very low risk of that happening. A year or two from now is a different story.
