  1. Is there any concern with Jay and Tate that we are looking at their velocity as relievers, then thinking that is where their velocity will be as starters? Per fangraphs data, from 2009 to 2012, Glen Perkins added 4-5 mph on average when he switched from starter to reliever. I would hate to get too excited about Jay for example and think we are getting a mid 90's lefty, then see him actually be in the low 90's, or Tate in the 93-98 range, only to see him actually be low 90's as well. If those guys end up low 90's they probably are not considered at #6 right? http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=8041&position=P
  2. The issue for me is it seems like our catcher depth is always deeper than it actually is. We always seem to have guys at AA or AAA that are catching, but they don't meet our standards defensively. I always thought Pinto and Morales were future catchers. So to see us so thin before we start ruling guys out makes me a little nervous. I think this is by far the biggest gap in the system.
  3. I hope we make catcher a bit more of a priority
  4. Multiple plus pitches and great command. Left handed. I think you take that at 6. I hope he is there. And I also hope he does not fall to the white sox at 8. I don't want any more lefties with sick stuff haunting us.
  5. Absolutely, with with a little victory has a 1,000 fathers and failure is an orphan sprinkled on top.
  6. I saw the headline and looked at drafts back to 2003. Interestingly, the 7th pick has been much better than the 6th over that period. Kershaw, Bailey, Harvey, and Bradley were all 7th, while Wheeler was the only stud picked 6th. It is a total crap shoot. Case and point, I have seen the write up from Dodger scouts that said Kershaw's upside is that of a #2 starter and his breaking balls are a "work in progress"
  7. Sale, Rodon, Quintana, and another lefty for the White Sox? Three of them with heat and good sliders...
  8. I like allard a lot too. The twins have never tried an under slot pick with their top pick, but this could be the year. Really a tight group between 4 and 15 or so. If we like someone more than others that looks to be drafted later it may make sense. Our success with Gonslaves may push us in that direction.
  9. Younger brothers, cousins, sons of coaches, and "bloodlines"
  10. Sounds like a good shot this guy is a reliever. Not interested in that at #6.
  11. My understanding RE: his draft slip is that he was viewed as a first rounder. then he was suspended 8 games, so teams didn't get to look at him or know exactly what happened. So kudos to the twins for doing some digging and taking a calculated risk.
  12. My understanding is he got in trouble because as a senior in high school, he was in a hotel room where he or someone else was smoking something wacky.....he refused to tell on who was all there. I am lettling that slide as a 17-18 year old. No immaturity as far as I am concerned. I am guessing 90% of the high school players in the next draft have been in that same position.
  13. Chris Sale had the same rep... http://bleacherreport.com/articles/402729-white-sox-select-rhp-chris-sale-in-first-round-of-2010-mlb-draft
  14. On a related note. The gun at the state fair is off quite a bit more. Said I was sitting 68-69 on my happy gilmore-esque fastball with cro-hop. I am thinking that gun needs to be adjusted 25-30 mph to accurately display my heat.
  15. Yeah, pretty good odds that if someone was on base, his two triples would have knocked them in. Agree with above. Move Gonsalves up.
  16. I have little doubt Sano will hit enough to be an above average MLB DH. I looked up the top DH and 3B in the AL right now. Surprisingly to me, the difference in offense between the two was much closer than I thought. There are 11 qualified DH's in the AL right now. Here are the top 8 by OPS, Victor Martinez is in the other group of three. 1. Nelson Cruz 1.121 OPS 2. Fielder .906 OPS 3. A-Rod .900 OPS 4. Bautista .847 OPS 5. Morales .812 OPS 6. Ortiz .761 OPS 7. Encarnacion .757 OPS 8. Laroche .735 OPS Here are the best qualified 3B in the AL (for apples to apples) 1. Donaldson .911 OPS 2. Moustakas .900 OPS 3. Machado .820 OPS 4. Plouffe .812 OPS 5. Longoria .784 OPS 6. Sandoval .758 OPS 7. Valbuena .738 OPS 8. Beltre . 720 OPS
  17. I don't neccesarily agree about 3B and OF. 3B is almost 100% first step, footwork, and reflexes. Reflexes are important in the OF, but so are angles to balls in the air and flat out speed. My understanding is Sano runs pretty good but the footwork at 3B is a work in progress.
  18. Yeah, I see the Twins stocking up on quantity. Maybe two catchers in the top 5-6 rounds.
  19. I am going to third this. We have virtually no depth behind our 31 year old catcher who is not really that good. The best hitter among all of them, including Suzuki is Pinto. He is 26 and at AAA with an OPS of .802. The Twins clearly have absolutely no faith in him as a catcher. If they did, he would be catching at least 60 games a year. Instead Fryer is on the team. None of the other guys can hit. Any why has Suzuki and his .644 OPS hit 2-5 in the order half the time? Guys with > .644 OPS: Dozier Hunter Plouffe Bernier Nunez Arcia Mauer Robinson Vargas Escobar
  20. I don't see a scenario where Buxton is not the starting CF by at least opening day next year, with a September callup this year. I think he will be up mid-summer. He missed all of last year basically and in his first 36 games has an OPS of .746. He has 4 2B, 7 3B, 4 HR, and 10 SB, only been caught stealing once.
  21. Just curious, what defensive metrics exist for minor league players? Outside of errors. Didn't think much existed...
  22. I am guessing you mean 2012? He played in 95 games and made 17 errors. One every 5.5 games. Sano has 10 in 33 games, one every 3.3 games. I think he could do it and I am not writing him off here. Just noting that he needs a dramatic improvement upon this rate.
  23. Interesting about his defense. I wonder if rust is a factor there too. I remember in 2013 he made a lot of errors in the first half of the year and turned it around in the second. If he doesn't cut down on the errors, I have a hard time seeing him stick at 3B.
  24. And this is exactly the way it should be. The guy doesn't just get handed a spot out of spring training. He wasn't put at the top of the order. He comes up, sees how his game compares. Gets his feet wet and the nerves out. Then goes back to AAA with a few things he needs to work on.
