  1. Said another way, we may have taken the guy with the most upside in the draft. At 1-6 in a relatively weaker draft...we took a lefty that has four pitches and good command, with two plus pitches and potentially another. I also heard two different people say he has deception in his delivery. I will take this all day.
  2. Jim Callis analysis: 6. Minnesota Twins: LHP Tyler Jay, Illinois Callis: He's not the biggest guy in the world and has made just two college starts, but he can be a Big League starter because everything else is there. The Twins could try to expedite him to the big leagues since they're contending -- maybe he's this year's Brandon Finnegan -- and then they could turn him into a starter next year. My personal view is the Twins probably try the Finnegan route. He has pitched in shorter stints all year, so they probably don't want to stretch him out now. I realize he went 6 IP yesterday but that was not typical.
  3. Great points bird. Frankly, I was worried we would pass on him and the white sox would take him. Sale, rodon, and jay. Lastly. I think the fact that he can be a reliever with an upper 90's fastball and plus slider is a good thing. That puts his floor very high. Not an ideal outcome, but if you remove most of a guys bust potential it is a very nice pick.
  4. With Tate off the board this is the guy I wanted. Give me a lefty with velocity and two plus pitches all day
  5. Yeah. He had 14 HR his last two years of high school. Not much power for a 5-tool guy that thinks he is a top two player. For context, Joe Mauer had 15 his senior season.
  6. I doubt he goes to college. He will get over slot money wherever he is drafted, but he isn't getting #2 money because he isn't a #2.
  7. Cameron doesn't seem good enough to put up with the signability BS, or Scott Boras in general. Not as fast as his Dad apparently, so he probably isn't the plus defender. Lacks HR power. I prefer Tate, then Jay.
  8. You mean those last few words mean something? Woops
  9. Classic double speak. We go BPA in the first five rounds....yet last year we took a bunch of relievers because we needed them even though we had starters rated higher.
  10. Gammons is saying Boston wants Benintendi at 7, but may lose him to the Astros at 5.
  11. Correction. Benintendi is 8. Jay is 9. The term they used with tucker is "nothing looks pure and easy with him". However they said he gets the barrel on the ball and a hunter pence comp. even though every guy in the first round will get comped to a better than average player and we all know that won't happen.
  12. I watched MLB TV countdown their top 50 prospects. 1. Rodgers 2. Swanson (all agreed he goes 1) 3. Fullmer 4 Bregman 5 Tate 6. Cameron 7 tucker 8 jay They talked that all three top pitchers are not locks to remain starters. If the twins feel like that is the case, it cements the view I share that it will be tucker. One thing they said about Tucker that stood out to me is that he is not athletically gifted or something like that. I hope jay is the guy. Or Tate if he is there.
  13. Very interesting. If that is our board, I would guess we get Allard or Tate. Seems every year someone in the top five takes someone that nobody saw going there. Like Schwarber.
  14. I would also have a tough time from a human perspective. Draft a high school kid who now has to go to college for three years or play with some independent team for a year. Or a guy that gets hurt the next year.
  15. In theory no. But if MLB thought this is what you were doing they could probably penalize you and take the pick. Not to mention reputational issues
  16. Jeremy, If you don't have an upcoming article doing this, would you mind constructing where you think the Twins big board sits, through six picks? I would find that interesting. I get the sense the three SS are all in there
  17. If he hits anything like he is right now I agree. .268 avg, .322 OBP and .361 slugging
  18. I agree with the ranking as well. The guys on the list that have an outside shot at leaping Joe are Price and Justin Upton. The guys they left off because it is too early would be Harper and Correa. Harper for example needs to average 3 WAR a season to match Joe's at age 32. He is at 4.3 thru June 4th this year. Either way, he is in the 90th percentile.
  19. It sounds like the Twins love the guy and will take him if he is there. If we do I sure hope he sticks at SS. He provides more value to the Twins there and would have more trade value as well.
  20. Mauer was the 4th ranked #1 pick in baseball history. Very interseting, you could make the case for guys like Price, but it goes to show you how good he has been, even if he has tailed off. Puts the complaining in context. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12998550/mlb-draft-ranking-best-no-1-overall-draft-picks
  21. After looking at Buxton's 9 3B in one month, I looked up the MLB record for a season. Chief Wilson hit 36 triples in 1912. Now I don't know if the OF were all really slow or the fences were 600 feet back in the day, but the top 25 or so are in the 1880-1920 range. Post 1950, the record is Curtis Granderson with 23. Lance Johnson had 21, Guzman, Rollins, and Brett had 20. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/3B_season.shtml
  22. It is encouraging to me to see so many top prospects on this list. This franchise is set up for a long, sustainable run in my opinion.
  23. I have a hard time with the importance of the corner OF spot as well. I also see endless depth there in the system, made up of guys that are really young (21-24 primarily). Buxton, Sano, Arcia, Rosario, Hicks, Kepler, Walker, and Harrison. Most of the time an 18 year old should not factor into the current depth, but most of these guys are young and in the minors still. If we think he is the best player in the draft, take him. You can always theoretically trade him or other depth later. But given the possibility that high ceiling starters like Tate and/or Jay may be available, I would have a tough time with this pick.
  24. I am not saying he should be the pick, but the Twins will draft him if he is available. Nice swing, high school, athletic, long, and bloodlines. He has all the boxes checked.
