  1. Who will help is win in April? Who will help win games later this year and beyond? The answer to April is up for debate. I would argue may. May is certainly a better bet in the future
  2. Which part did I miss? Hicks was accountable and pelfrey acted like the last two years didn't happen. What are the twins supposed to say to pelfrey? You will make the team is 3 guys get hurt? I guess I don't buy "open competition" being the same as lowest era in 10 innings wins the job.
  3. Good call on the DFA options > Nunez and Robinson. It seems like Twins always worry about covering every defensive four times and never have a single late inning bat. Maybe Pinto....but a pretty weak offensive bench again.
  4. Let me get this straight. Hicks didn't make the team and acted like a pro and was somewhat accountable. Pelfrey acted like a child.
  5. Sorry to burst his bubble. But if he had any trade value whatsoever, he would have been traded already. Unfortunately, the rest of the league also accepts that the last two years did in fact happen and he didnt have a great career prior to that. If the twins told him If his ERA was lower after three short starts he gets the job, then he should be upset. But open competition to me does not say we are writing off the past, projection, things like strikeouts and competition. He should keep quiet and laugh all the way to the bank. The joke is on the twins. I would also embrace the pen if I was him. It is his only shot of sticking in the league and making another 10 million dollars.
  6. Seriously, on what grounds is he upset? What has he done to earn a spot here? He even acknowledged himself that he feels like he has stolen money from the Twins.
  7. Attitude and culture matter. But I have a hard time believing molitor and the pitching coach are worth ten games. I think more like 3.
  8. I think it is a 20-30 percent shot that he is gone ahead of us. The Rockies or Rangers are probably the only options though. I agree he does not get to 10.
  9. I would think so as well. They initially had a $6.5m deal. Then the Astos went down to $3.1m, then apparently went back up to $5m. But at that point he probably was not sure he needed TJ and he might have simply not wanted to be a member of that organization. Last years #6 pick Alex Jackson signed above slot for $4 million.
  10. In some ways that is a benefit, it is out of the way before his MLB service clock goes. the clock was winding on guys like Strasburg, Harvey, Wheeler, and Liriano during their 18 month rehab. To your other point, it isn't a lock he goes back to who he was. But we would not have had the chance to draft him at 6 overall if he didn't get hurt. So it is a value play. I think you start with what he was and then adjust that to the drop off we have seen out of guys that have had the surgery in the last 3-4 years. Start with a 1-1 talent, a rare 6'5 lefty with four pitches. The fastball was 95. Now say it is 93. He had a really nasty breaking ball, now say he has just an above average breaking ball. I don't know why the change up, which was a plus pitch would change much. Well that looks like a guy I take at 6th overall every day of the week.
  11. Jeremy Nygaard on Twitter. Jeremy Nygaard @jeremynygaard · 13 hrs13 hours ago If the draft was deeper, maybe I'd feel differently... but it isn't stacking up to be real good. Aiken is worth the risk at #6.1 retweet 4 favorites Reply Retweet 1 Retweeted 1 Favorite 4 Favorited 4 More Embed Tweet Jeremy Nygaard @jeremynygaard · 13 hrs13 hours ago I'm fairly certain that Aiken was #1 on the #MNTwins board last year. And, if healthy, would have been there again.
  12. I guess that is the question. Are pitchers with TJ damaged goods? You can find a few all of famers who have had TJ. It doesn't seem to be hurting Gibson. Giolito, and many others. And for me you have a 1-1 talent available at #6. And a guy that is a very, very rare commodity of size, lefty, and stuff. What if he throws 93 instead of 95 and has an above average curve? I will take that at 1-6 every day of the week.
  13. I know when he was drafted. But Gordon was drafted 5th, Schwarber 4th. Those are the types of players that are going to be available, especially since many thought the Twins and Cubs stretched a little with those picks.
  14. The Astros concluded he needed TJ and made a decision. They either wanted Aiken for a very small amount of money or the 2nd pick the following year. They probably low balled him knowing he would not take it.
  15. Half these guys have TJ in the first few years anyway. Almost all of them come back, it really isn’t as big of a deal outside of the contract risk and missing a guy for 1.5 years. In this case his career starts 9 months later and maybe he is on a pitch count the next year. It is about value and upside. 6’5 lefty’s with that stuff. He was a clear #1 pick, over Rodon, Bryant, etc. I don’t think he gets out of the top 10 and I guess I would not be totally shocked if he is gone before us. Although 2 of those five picks are Houston and something tells me they won’t draft him. I would rather have Giolito right now than Nick Gordon or Kyle Schwarber.
  16. When I first read this I didn't read the contending part. I thought you said simply "unless CF is a hole".
  17. This means he will likely be available for the Twins. Frankly, I would take him at 6th overall if I was the Twins. Lucas Giolito was a likely top 3 pick and needed TJ. The Nats took him 16th. He is now the 6th best prospect in the game. Last year, after TJ and at 19 years old he had a 2.20 ERA and 110 K's in 98 IP at high A. His report from last year. Polished 6'4 lefty. Good control. Mid 90's fastball and a really good breaking ball. Four good pitches overall. They don't grow on trees.
  18. Milone is somewhere between a 5th starter and a 7th starter. May's FIP last suggests last year that even though he was shelled in 20% of those starts, he was a 5th starter. He took a step forward and nobody can argue his upside is not higher than Milone's. Let's move north with May and use Milone as he should be, spot starts and as a long reliever. If we have slotted Pelfrey there than we need to make a decision between the two for that role and the loser is AAA depth.
  19. I was looking at some power and split numbers. I could not find OPS and HR rates by pitch, but if these ten situations were against right handed pitchers it seems like these are calculated decisions. Career numbers: Against righties - 20.4% of his fly balls were HR. .490 slugging and .809 OPS. Against lefies - 9.8% of his fly balls were HR. .347 slugging and .613 OPS If memory serves me he has always hit fastalls pretty well. So these numbers probably jump on fastballs. If these situations were against righties and he is told to look fastball, I think it is a pretty compelling swing away situation. If they were against a lefty, you hope to be walked.
  20. Sconnie and Brock. Both good points. I think you have some culpability on both sides (twins and Arcia) On a side note. Spell check kept changing "sconnie" to "a commie". I figured you would be flattered with that association.
  21. Gibson could be really good. Brandon Webb was an ace when healthy. His high k per 9 was 7.3 and he had a gb percentage ranging between 62 and 67 percent. The closer Gibson gets to those two numbers the better. I think he had a shot at mid 6's on k's and a 60 percent ground ball rate.
  22. Sconnie, Potential concussion for pinto and I think this is just talking about breaking camp. So that is why.
  23. On the first page of comments alone, I tally up four people suggesting an extension without the qualification you have made. In fairness, you made this crystal clear on your comments.
