  1. Yup, what he said.
  2. Yeah, actually I posted a whole thread about it a couple of weeks ago. It has been this way for a while. http://twinsdaily.com/topic/19507-twins-should-call-up-platoon-kepler-now/ Also, you do realize that 2 doubles is worth more than a HR and 3 triples is worth more than 2 HRs, right? Kepler has plenty of power. People just don't acknowledge it because it doesn't come completely in the form of HR.
  3. Wow, great game from Gonsalves. Really good to see after his strikeouts had been down in FM earlier.
  4. Agreed completely, although I think Escobar is adequate if no cost-controlled or reasonably obtainable better SS is available.
  5. But the thing is we don't need another 4th or 5th starter in our system, but we could use a good LOOGY who isn't terrible against righties (in case the order goes L-R-L). So my point is maybe "now" is the best "any time" for the Twins. So basically your last sentence.
  6. Yeah, a potential logjam is a good problem to have, but Terry Ryan needs to make some careful decisions this offseason that may determine whether the next 6 years will be great or just good. The best argument for calling up Kepler in September In My Opinion is so that Ryan can get a look at how he handles and responds to big league pitching before the offseason, so that his performance can inform off-season trades (do we trade Plouffe and/or one of Rosario/Hicks/Kepler, and/or Arcia and/or Vargas). Obviously one month of MLB is really not an ideal basis on which to evaluate a player, but given that some offseason trades are likely to happen either way, one month of watching Kepler at the major league level is better than nothing. He is the only one potentially on the trading block for the OF/DH/1B/3B logjam that has not seen big league pitching.
  7. I agree. Why not put Duffey in the bullpen? Also, May has the highest WAR among all of the Twins pitchers this year according to Fangraphs, with 2 WAR in just less than 100 innings. That is a solid # 2 pitcher. That's awesome. That is being driven by his low FIP of 3.26.
  8. Good point. I would assume at Rochester.
  9. Arcia is a mess right now. It isn't just a small slump. Sorry, but it isn't. I'm not ready to give up on him, but the idea that he is closer to contributing to this team than Kepler right now is absolutely insane. And if and when Arcia is ready to contribute, it will be as DH, not OF. There is no reason for him to ever play OF for the Twins again, except in an emergency. I know you disagree with this, but that's my strong belief. I also think the Twins FO mostly sees it the same way I do, thankfully. I do mostly agree that Kepler should be playing every day, or almost every day, but I think a 4 man outfield with Hicks sitting against the best RHP and Kepler/Rosario sitting against the best LHP, and/or Kepler getting 1 or 2 starts a week at DH/1B would work great. I acknowledge that unlike the above, the FO probably isn't with me on this, since they really don't like platooning. It is a shame however. Because what ends up happening is Hicks flailing against RHP like Kluber or Escobar or Nunez starting at DH. Neither of those things should ever be happening, and if that means Kepler, Rosario, and Hicks have to sit once a week, and that slightly slows their development for a year or part of a year, I think it is far more than worth it.
  10. Hicks makes some highlight-worthy plays, but he also makes some huge blunders. As just one example, he gave up a "triple" (really it was an error) in the second inning of May's start that would have been easily caught by most CF, because he misplayed it. Then the next batter hit a 2 run homer. He's far from a perfect defender, and he's not as fast as Buxton. Buxton has more defensive upside, so assuming he is hitting well enough to be in the lineup, he should be playing CF.
  11. I don't think it is worth taking up a roster spot next season (nor $5-10 million, but that actually matters less to me) for Hunter to play mentor to Buxton. If they could bring back Hunter as a coach, even if he cost $2-5 million, then fine. But we need that roster spot for people like Kepler, Polanco, Vargas, Arcia, or Santana. Good grief. That would be a BAD one-year contract, although to be fair to your point, I think that it would also be insane for them to do that.
  12. Ok, well this thread was about signing Hunter next year, not this past year. And your comment literally said there is no such thing as a bad one-year contract, not that some one-year contracts are good, or this past year's contract with Hunter was good (or even just not bad). Next year, a one-year signing of Hunter would be "bad."
  13. Yeah, I couldn't disagree more. One-year contracts can never be as devestating as bad multi-year contracts, but they can always take away from more valuable acquisitions and limit playing time for internal options who might turn out to be good.
  14. Seems like all of those scouts who kept insisting that his hit tool was really good despite poor early results weren't just making it up.
  15. I guess we're not watching the same video then, because the only part I can see of him in the first video (which is admittedly poorly shot) is the very end just before he catches the ball, where he looks very athletic. I'm not sure where the "waiting like a statue part is."
  16. Yeah, of course. I was responding to the claim that after having "seen" Kepler play outfield, he looked Arciaesque, which to me means awkward unathletic movements with poor timing and last-second lunges at balls, etc. In other words, the eye test. Kepler looks like a gazelle, and not even just in comparison to Arcia. That being said, the eye test can certainly be deceiving, so if Thrylos would like to provide some range data to show that Kepler's defensive range (which is largely based on routes and reaction time as you note) is similar to Arcia's, I'd be happy to look at it. Everything I've heard is that his defense is solid-average to above average in the corner outfield. Maybe the data will show that his range is as limited as Arcia's but I severely doubt it. BTW, that's not to knock Arcia as a player. He's got tremendous power. He just doesn't look or turn out after looking at the data to be that good of a defensive outfielder.
  17. You mean like this: http://m.mlb.com/video/v42569983/balmin-kepler-makes-diving-catch-to-end-frame or this: http://m.milb.com/t498/video/208098083
  18. Obviously there is a lot of uncertainty about any prospect (although Rosario and to a lesser extent Hicks also have uncertainty and could turn into a pumpkin any day, just as Santana and to a lesser extent Vargas did this year), but Kepler should not be lightly traded and should be given a very serious shot because I think his most likely outcome is better than Rosario and better than Hicks against RHP, although not LHP. Hicks is also the better defender, so I would rank them in terms of assets: (1) Hicks (2) Kepler (3) Rosario Rosario's lack of plate discipline is what drops him below Kepler IMO, even though he's probably a slightly better defender.
  19. Yeah, that's probably right, although I think quite a few people are still skeptical long-term. But I agree about starting next year. Would like to see how Kepler does in a few MLB games in September though.
  20. I just think we need to make room for Kepler. I know a lot of people here are skeptical, but I'm not. If he plays 1B, then great, but Mauer makes that a problem. If he plays corner outfield, even better, although then it means Rosario and/or Hicks will either be traded or, preferably in my book, only playing part time (e.g., Hicks plays against lefties and righties with 3.50+ ERAs).
  21. Yeah, disappointing. I hope it is related to recovery from the injury.
  22. I completely agree. I'm just really frustrated by the continued conflicting information about whether or not he is in fact shelving his slider and/or other breaking balls. We continue to hear conflicting things over and over again. The problem isn't that we don't have information, but rather that we don't know which the "real information" is.
  23. Tweets by whom? A Twins employee, or a neutral third-party? Makes all the difference when velocity is at issue.
  24. That third strike call on Sano was complete horse ****. What a joke.
  25. Yeah, but the point is that we keep hearing conflicting things, and I don't understand why. Something doesn't make sense about this.
