    Yes, there will be some regression on the mound and the pen needs fortification. But I agree there is also hope there to balance out regression and provide greater depth in the rotation and the pen. Imagine the lineup as Rosario, Buxton and Kepler continue to grow and develop, along with Polanco, and Rosier kicks it up a notch. Oh, and I forgot to include Vargas! The offense should continue to grow and improve over the season, and that also can stave off regression. Barring injuries or implosion from the rotation, I still think this is a .500 club or a few games over.

    Another great read! Only regret is it want longer and more detailed. I find his comment on Jay to be especially interesting. I get the idea of moving him to the pen to excel, and to do so quickly. But with Rogers there, Melotakis such a strong contender there, and Rosario possibly as good or better, I'd still like to see Jay starting, developing, and maybe filling out a couple of pounds for endurance sake if nothing else. I think moving him to the pen this soon is a mistake.

    100%! Absolutely no reason Grossman can't see a few games here and there to give guys a day off against a LH starter. Other than that, there is absolutely no reason to sit Kepler or Rosario. They are both talented, dynamic, athletic young players with big upsides. Let them play! Daily! I LOVE Rosario and his potential. He will never be a disciplined hitter, but his defense is excellent. He offers hitting, power and speed. He seems to love the game and shows instincts. He just needs to calm himself down a bit. It's heady company, but I've read comparisons to Oliva and Puckett. And the comparisons are apt, if premature. But I like Kepler even more. The entire skill set is there to develop. Next to Sano, he may be the most complete hitter in the entire lineup...potentially. Buxton is even more athleticly gifted, and may prove to ultimately prove to be more dynamic, but Kepler may prove to be the better pure hitter and OB guy. I could easily see him as the future #3 hitter allowing Sano to hit cleanup.

    This was a very interesting read. Thank you for sharing with us! I can't disagree with Law's assertion that the Twins "losing" would be fine if they were playing the right guys for the future. Of course, I want to be greedy and I want to win AND play the right guys! Lol For the most part, I think they are doing that however. Right now, the only questionable area of playing time is Mauer maybe playing too much, and I'd still like to see Garver up and Giminez moved. That's not a knock on Giminez who has been a solid signing. But sooner or later, the younger, talented, and better offensive player in Garver needs and deserves his shot. Pitching is a different story, but injury has clouded that situation somewhat. Rotationally speaking, I thought the team had the numbers until May got hurt, Gibson imploded and Duffey went to the pen. (Though the Duffey move was probably smart). I really hope Mejia gets his shot and the team sticks with him. Injuries last season, and this season, have hindered the presence and advancement of Chargois, Burdi, Melotakis and Jay. But it's only May 17th, and I believe both Burdi and Melotakis are about to be promoted. Then, it's getting Chargois and Jay healthy and on the hill. At least a couple of these guys should be slinging it for the Twins in the second half.

    At some point yes, but I'm not sure I'd be in a hurry to move Sank off third anytime soon. He's playing good to great defense with that cannon of an arm. Finding a solid 1B with offense is a lot easier than finding a quality 3B with Sano's offense. However, if we do indeed end up with a roster crunch, it could make sense to move him to 1B simply to get another fine player in the lineup.

    Like this and agree. The injury to Chargois has hurt, or he'd already be up. (Or would have already been here but for a disappointing ST). Previous injuries to Burdi, Melotakis and Jay have also slowed movement, and possibly dented FO hopes and plans. But still mid May, the plans are not ruined by any means. Burdi and Melotakis need to be up to Rochester soon. June 1st target date? Fine. Get it done. Let them get that experience and confidence, and then get them up. A healthy Chargois the same. There is still a lot of time, and I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 of them, if not all 3, by July sometime. Though, barring injury, I'm still not certain who goes. I don't see Kintzler moved and someone just plugged in to his role, especially if the team is winning and p,saying competitive ball. Haley is a rule 5. Pressly has stuff, potential, and has been quite solid previously. Duffey is excelling in his role. Rogers is getting better and better. So...does that leave Breslow and Belisle to be moved? It would appear so, even though neither has performed poorly. And that's a good thing as perhaps they can can provide trade value to some degree.

    The problem is trying to define what an ACE pitcher really is. Just reading all the well thought out comments here is proff of that. There is a difference, IMO, between a #1 starter and an ACE, though an ACE is obviously a #1 starter. A true ACE is that #1 starter who does his job...being a dominant SP overall...consistently. He doesn't have to win 20 every year for goodness sake, but you know he's capable of it. Along with 30+ starts and 200IP, etc. You get the idea. Transport of the old adage where you know it/him when you see it/him. Santana is, and has been, a largely successful and reliable pitcher for his career. You could argue, for whatever reason(s), he's never been better in his career, overall, than since he joined the Twins. He's a high quality #3 who has often pitched like a quality #2. I think you could make the argument he's been a true #2 since joining the Twins. Right now, and even for a 100 loss team last season, an argument could be made he's pitched like a #1. Not an ACE, but a real #1. What matters most is this is a FA move that paid off for us. And I love the way the Twins have been using him, putting him out there, but also not riding him too hard.

    We all know the baseball draft is the biggest crapshoot of all sports drafts. Despite scouting, rankings, performance, potential, athleticism, velocity, raw power, etc, etc, the dipping and darting of a high velocity round ball being hit by a round bat still remains a complex mystery of success to predict. You still draft for potential. But is it so wrong to also draft a pick that feels "safe"? I am not knocking Greene or McKay in any way. Both could turn out to be high quality major leaguers. But Greene, so young, so far away, even with his tremendous FB would seem to be the greatest risk of the three without solid confirmation of at least that second pitch. McKay seems to be a quality pitcher, is LH, and offers at least decent velocity. But it seems to me Wright offers the frame, velocity, and quality secondary pitches to not only have a high ceiling, but to be the more "proven" and "safer" pick to succeed. Without a Clemens, Strasburger or Harper available, I think you balance potential and safety of your choice and that just seems to say Wright to me.

    I know spoke people have doubts about the Twins having managers, coaches, instructors, etc who they hire from within the Twins family. There is a sense, from some, that these guys won't think outside the box because they played within the system during some down times, and perhaps they will carry on old ways of thinking from those struggling teams. I do not agree. I find that good, quality people are just that. And I enjoy the sense of care and organizational family that these guys bring. And it should be pointed out that many of the guys the Twins have brought back to coach, manage, instruct, etc, have played with other organizations besides the Twins. I won't heap platitudes on Watkins as a manager, at this point, simply because he's a rookie at the job. But he sure is off to a great start. And it sure seems like Mayer, Mientkiewicz and Watkins are a trio of up and coming manager possibilities.

    I agree fixing Gibson brings greater value than a trade at this point. The hope is for Mejia to be ready by mid season, (possibly Slegers), but they will need a 5th starter way before then. I hate rainouts, but if one did happen, could it provide a rotation boost as we wouldn't need the 5th starter for another week and give Gibson at least one more AAA start to work on things? Sorry to see Tanner English struggle at AA this season. I had high hopes for him. Hopefully he can get right and get back up again.

    The more I read about Wright the more I like him. I know people are enamored with Greene and his high 90 to 100 heat. But I still keep reading inconsistent reports here and there about his secondary stuff. I also like McKay. He's ON, which is nice, throws consistently in the low to mid 90's and is proven. He seems to have a solid floor and a decent ceiling. But Wright throws harder, probably has the higher ceiling, and would probably be every bit as close to the majors as McKay. A possible 4 pitch mix right out of college with that frame and potential? I think I'm starting to lean a bit the "Wright" way.

    Great game by Berrios! I mean, really, what more could we have hopes for or asked for? Now, he's still young and inexperienced. Even the best pitchers have off days. But what a boost he gives the rotation! Now, if Santiago can keep plugging along, and Hughes can continue to refine his latest approach and offerings I feel we have at least 4 "decent" if not good starters. But who is the 5th starter when we need one. Or should I say, the first guy to audition? Experience and contract, I'd almost have to say Gibson, though I think he's better off in AAA a little longer. But the same could be said for Slegers and Mejia. I doubt Haley is stretched out enough. Mayer is trending, and hopefully that will continue and we'll at least see the '15-'16 versions of him this season. Am I crazy to suggest that even if we do the lineup is better...assuming Buxton ALSO keeps improving...with Mayer hitting 8th, ahead of the catching platoon, providing a veteran presence at the bottom of the order and ahead of Dozier?

    With all the "free Burdi" love out there, I wonder if there shouldn't be some "free Bard" cries out there as well. Maybe not to the majors, but soon to Rochester. I get that injuries curtailed his career early, and even made any sort of career questionable, but he really seems to have found himself. Very glad the organization resisted Romero beginning the season back in A+. He seems to have accepted the AA challenge and is getting better and better. Considering his stuff and potential along with his youth, and previous time missed, I'd be OK if he spent most, if not all season, in AA and just kept working and improving.

    With all due respect for his work behind the plate to help the Twins, I wonder about a trade of Giminez at some point when a team out there needs catching help.

    For the most part, I like what we've seen from Hughes. Very disappointing last night that he looked good for the first 3 innings against the White Sox before seeming to lose it. He's looked shaky at times, but battled out of most tight situations effectively. There is room for him in the rotation as a "solid" piece. There are comments about him not being able to face teams a second time with his new approach. That may prove true. But then again, what if his new approach becomes that more refined as the season goes along and he even gains a tick on his FB?

    Have to agree that the age of the staff is going to be dropping as we go along. Berrios is a big start. (Pun somewhat intended). I am not happy with the retread approach in the pen, but I really think a lot of it is mix and match to buy time for Chargois and Reed to be healthy and get it going again, as well as gaining time for the great group of bullpen arms in Chattanooga. I think...in addition to when one/some of them come up, is do you reach down to AA for one/two arms?

    This is great and exciting news to be sure. Just get him to relax...throw...and don't send him down if it takes a few starts to get rolling. If you can give Gibson the starts he got, then you can afford to be equally patient with Berrios. Now...another few weeks to a month...and Mejia joins in as the #5 starter...ahh...a fan can dream can't he?

    That bullpen for Chatanooga is absolutely stacked! Doesn't there just have to be promotions to Rochester, or even the Twins, in the next week or so?

    I haven't agreed with all the moves, or non moves, by the new FO before ST, during, or so far this season. But I absolutely have a feel for their moves, their direction, and any method to their madness, so to speak. This move, however, just befuddles me! This just screams someone off the street to start a game and then move to the pen, or AAA, or just be a rent-a-game player. Nothing about it makes any sense at all. Are they just trying that hard to give Berrios that one or two more starts? I just don't get it! My fingers are tightly crossed that 2-3 pitching moves will be taking place over the next couple of weeks

    Nice post! Always felt Buxton would turn it around eventually. I do find myself still wondering what kind of hitter he is ultimately going to be, however. I used to think he would be a quality leadoff batter but would eventually slide further down the order, similar to Puckett's progression. I'm now starting to wonder if he might be more of a natural 3-6 hitter.

    Wheeler is on the other line...says he wants to know what he needs to do to get a shot and would be happy to make an appearance on the 40 man roster.
