1. Listening to Mayo and Callis, they feel you have to 'hit' with a high 1st RD pick, aka not risk. Then it's more playing poker as the rounds get later. That thinking would lean more towards Nola types over Koleck and Touki. I'm very intrigued by Touki, the recent improvement and the fact he could have the best curve in the class as well as a plus-fastball (just needs better command). I think he'll put on some weight too...he's tall enough. Compare him to Jeff Hoffman, a JR in college, they're about the same weight, but Touki has 3 years to put on more muscle/weight while having arguably similar skillset in his pitch repertoire. Hoffmann was considered a top 5 pick before his injury (by many, not this couch scout though). I'm semi torn on Gordon, more if he's gone at #4 than us getting him. If he's gone I'm hoping for Touki or Jackson with the big 3 arms likely gone.
2. Now this just in the chat... [h=6]Klaw (1:44 PM) [/h] I think I answered this earlier, but I did hear this afternoon that the Twins could switch to Kolek from Gordon if both are there - I don't believe that they WILL, but that it's not a slam-dunk as I indicated in the mock.
3. Yeah, I can't see Rodon not signing. He has some leverage this year...but wouldn't have much next year. Teams don't lose their pick anymore like the Twins did with Travis Lee...so teams aren't quite forced like they had been in the past, either. I hope the Twins take the guy they like, signability concerns out the window, they can always draft #6 next year.
4. I would side (and hope) for a non-reliever. JT Chargois and Luke Bard were similar pick. Throws hard, but never would amount to a starter. I think most people (you included) tend to say, go with the hard throwing starter, if he can't develop a 3rd pitch, he can throw 2 pitches as a reliever or one if it's a plus-plus cutter, e.g. Jansen (LAD) and Rivera (NYY). Hoping for high upside HS player who fell or a college SP who fell (a la Sean Manaea circa 2013).
5. Keith Law's mock today: Twins taking Gordon... Analysis: This is the lock of the draft. Unless Brady Aiken gets here, which he won't, they're taking Gordon. And that's with Koleck still available. Aiken, Rodon, Nola, Conforto...Twins taking Gordon.
6. Keith Law has this... Twins taking Gordon... Analysis: This is the lock of the draft. Unless Brady Aiken gets here, which he won't, they're taking Gordon. And that's with Koleck still available...
7. Glad you got the DSL games in here too Jeremy and highlighted the two biggest international signings of 2013 for the Twins. Twins fans need to watch out for Diaz, just like Amauyrs Minier of the 2012 signings, he projects as a possible 30 HR guy. Diaz was MLB.com's #10 international signing. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2013/ "One scout said he would not be surprised if Diaz ended up hitting 40 home runs in the big leagues one day." Here's Aaron Gleeman on Diaz and Tapia http://aarongleeman.com/2013/07/03/international-signing-day-twins-spend-2-million-on-16-year-old-hitters/ Antonio Tovar, hitting 2nd in that same lineup. Here he is doing batting pratice at age 15. He's a thick kid. Those 3 guys best tools are hit and power.
8. Good writeup. So basically, If he's there at #5, other than the 'big 3'...Twins have to select him.
9. Pretty excited about this. The Thorpe promotion and Romero. I read a couple reports, one from Seth or TD and another, perhpas minor league ball and Romero looked great in ST. If Berrios continues his dominance and you get Thorpe and Romero showing a handle on 'A' this year, could make for an interesting June/July 2015.
10. I agree. I'd be very disappointed if both were there and we went with Gordon in that case. I don't think the Twins would go that route either. I believe they would take Jackson. Who has the arm profile for 3B as well as RF in addition to many believing he can stay at catcher as well as having a 25-35 HR potential and a better hit tool than Gordon. Gordon doesn't seem to be be that much better than the average SS, but Jackson could be significantly better than the average C, 3B, or RF. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
11. His slider has grades from 65 to 70, so yes, plus to plus-plus. BP: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=22959 MLB: (go to prospect #32) http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2014/ Grading on the Curve: http://gradingonthecurve.com/2013/01/16/2013-draft-prospect-kohl-stewart-rhp-tx/ Keith Law in TD archive: http://twinsdaily.com/archive/index.php/t-7679.html MLBtraderumors (2nd article): http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/kohl-stewart And I've read reports that he's been limited on the use of the slider or 'slurve' he has to focus on spot command of the FB/Changeup. The guy had 2 bad starts where his control was off...otherwise his ERA would be under 1.70 as a 19 year old (2.9 years younger than his competition) is pretty darn solid, not sure if anyone saw it. But compare him to a 4 year college starter and #1 overall draft pick of the same MLB draft (Mark Appel) and he looks like the better pick despite having 4 years less development time. Check it out: Hope that helps put 19 year old Kohl Stewart in perspective.
12. You're either a lawyer or Jon Stewart E. Tim Keefe in 1880, although he only pitched 105 innings, so I'll go with the #2 guy there. One Pedro Martinez. Pedro's opponent batting line is just sick: .167/.213/.259; and of course, a MLB record 0.74 WHIP. Single Season ERA+ Leaders: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/earned_run_avg_plus_season.shtml I will say if I was a right handed hitter, Nolan Ryan would be my most feared. If a left handed hitter, Randy Johnson. But I'd probably be most frustrated against Pedro Martinez. With Randy I'd have a career .281 OBP. Nolan, a .293 OBP....Pedro? .260. And with Nolan and Randy I'd have a 15% and 11% chance of obtaining a free pass without taking the bat off my shoulder. With Pedro? I'd only have an 8% chance of getting a BB.
13. Some fun fodder if you will. Kohl Stewart, by many would be right behind Aiken as the #2 prospect if he were in this Draft. I'll admit, I wanted Bryant (3B) who went to the Cubs...my favorite pick, then Gray. And just for some fun, a look at Kohl Stewart, the #4 overall pick, a HS pitcher, and Mark Appel, the #1 overall pick, 4 yr college starter at Stanford. I know stats aren't everything and it's not saying anything going forward. Just what it is for what it is now.
14. Interesting. I have Koleck as #2...not far behind though. A matter of preference perhaps? Maybe this question will shed more light on it. Who do you view as being the most dominant... A. Randy Johnson B. Nolan Ryan C. Pedro Martinez D. Greg Maddux
15. BP Draft Chat: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/chat/chat.php?chatId=1164 Jason (NY): Who has the best curveball and highest pure ceiling for a pitcher in the draft? I'd be inclined to go Touki for both. Pre-Draft Chat with Nick J. Faleris: I'll co-sign. Me three. Presently feeling... Aiken > Koleck > Rodon > Jackson > Touki > Gordon > Newcomb > Nola Ceiling wise, I'd probably have Touki the highest though.
16. Quick Question...the Super 2 is that 'date' based on last year's rookies or this year's? I know it's based on an aggregate of some sorts. With Oscar Taveras up as well as Garin Cecchini (Bos) and other rookies...does that 'move up the date' to earlier than the usual mid-to-late June date? I ask, as in application to the possible promotion of May an/or Meyer.
17. FYI. Eddie Rosario is a "she"...at this point. (fixed--ed.) Some positive things though. Pretty stoked to see Berrios continue to dominate and Kohl to bounce back after a poor start.
18. Heckuva performance. He's one of the top pitchers in A+ despite being 3 years younger than the competition. Pretty cool. He could be up at AA sometime this year if this continues for a few more starts.
19. Good read. Thanks for sharing. He may learn the strike zone with the type of attitude/mentality he has. Which is refreshing vs a 'hot shot' thinking he can hit anything type - so much like Buxton, you have some hope because he sounds like a guy who will do what he's told (aka take coaching). He may not be "developing" as quickly as many might like, but his age is below his level despite having gone to college. A little behind the 'star' prospects, as he's 22 this year. Given he may just lead the FSL in HRs and RBIs, it'd be nice if every level he stops at he leads the league in homers.
20. Thought this was a great post on some of the potential "Aces" for the 2014 Draft. Some excellent GIFs (animations) of the pitching deliveries as well as analysis by Baseball Prospectus. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23731 Koleck's motion looks good to me here and his velocity is 'easy'. Hoffman is a stick (didn't like him before) and didn't like his delivery then...watching this, don't like it even more. I'd take Nola's setup and deliver over his. Forget the body actually doing the work.
21. Now that Escobar is cooling down, would Santana get a shot at SS? He's hotter at the dish than Nunez and Nunez has looked equally horrible in LF as Santana in CF. Granted Nunez has looked alright at 3B in his times there. I see the pecking order being Escobar, Santana, Nunez...but that's maybe not what the Twins see. I'm with others and letting Kubel go. Arcia is back and offers everything Kubel does, but better.
22. Law said Gordon is a guy the Twins have followed all season long. And he's a guy who shows a lot of "polish" and for a high school kid, he'll likely move up the [farm] system pretty fast as compared to most high school players. I have the feeling Jackson will be gone by the time the Twins select. Either #2 or #4. Then the other 3 power pitchers (Aiken, Rodon, & Koleck) being the other picks. Touki could be great. Nola is likely to be at least a Brandon Arroyo with more K's by 2015. But Gordon seems to be a solid selection. I wish there was more hit and power as we seem to have the most depth at SS, although each of them seems to have one major issue. From Santana to Goodrum to Polanco to Vielma. If Buxton can hit his 18-25 HR, Sano his 35-45 HR, Pinto his 20-25, and Arcia becomes what I think he can be, a 25-32 HR guy I guess we'd be in pretty good shape power wise going forward. But if not...could be some lean years again. When this team isn't walking it's not scoring runs without a power bat. Which is reflective of OBP, arguably shown to be the most indicative offensive stat of RS and thus, Wins. I'd take a great fielding SS who has a .375+ OBP...not caring that much about his other numbers.
23. I agree as well, but I'd sacrifice ALL our prospects at SS in the Twins system and this years #5 pick to have last year's #16 pick. One, JP Crawford. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=crawfo000jp- Law said today in his chat, thought he was going to be good and a bit slow developing. Now, believes he's an absolute star to come.
24. I too think the pick will be Gordon...but don't like the projection he offers. His ceiling hit tool projects 50-55. That's .255-265. Keith Law and others say his "hit tool will be a little better than average"...average is around .252-.259. So that falls in line. That's too low for a top 5 pick IMO.
25. I'm with Mike, jinxing the jinx, or unjinxing. Anything to stir that pot. Of Nick's 5... I think I like Newcomb, Gordon, Jackson. I know I like Newcomb a lot more than Freeland. I want to know Gordon is faster and can hit .300. Otherwise, I'd rather see what comes of Santana, Polanco, Goodrum, and Vielma. Or even see Dozier move to SS with Rosario or any of those other aforementioned guys at 2B. I am guessing the pick is Gordon, unless the Twins feel solid about 1 of those 4 guys I mentioned. Otherwise, you're picking a pretty weak bat that doesn't play much anywhere else. Hitters typically turn out more than pitchers, but that said, you need more bullets in the gun concerning pitchers. Three years from now, how many of these guys make it through the system starting for the Twins with a sub 4.0 ERA/FIP? Meyer May Baxendale Berrios Stewart Landa Gonsalves Thorpe Slegers Romero Jorge Rosario Is two an overly optimistic guess? Three? Does a college pitcher make more sense with such a glut of guys at ELZ/A/A+? Maybe why Nola (and maybe Newcomb) are more of interest...at least press wise of late.
