  1. I caught the last part of Ryan's last appearance this morning. One thing has gone unmentioned. At the very end Ryan mentioned that the Twins had won once all season, one single time, on the Friday prior to Terry Ryan coming on the show. It was an unprompted comment and was said in a light context, and Mackay was caught off guard but went with the joke. But then Ryan again said words to the effect of "one win on Fridays, something's gotta give". I'd like to think it was a signal to expect a major announcement, but then again it's probably just me projecting meaning on a meaningless remark. Hey, in desperate times we grasp whatever straws we can.
  2. Four man rotation!!! Garza, Lincecum, Duensing, Pavano (provided spleen is healed)
  3. Like Terry Ryan has said, I think the answer will come from within, not free agency. Already our double play combo is among the best. Hard as it was to stomach, in pure baseball terms the Morneau/Presley trade was a good one. We have great outfield prospects. Maybe both Hicks and Presley will be in the outfield next year. Pitching. It was odd to see Albers and Pinto struggle against each other last night, while Albers and Herrmann seem to work great together. Next year I think there's room for both Herrmann and Pinto -- and of course Mauer as you say. I liked Butera the way he handled pitchers. I would have been happy seeing Florimon/Butera bat 8th and 9th every day, but alas, talking about Butera is just looking backwards. I'm looking forward to Gardy's last win too but I also think we need to find some pitching coaches who can make a personal connection with our prospects and get them figured out. Because like Yogi said, 90% of the game is half mental and there's a lot a coach can do to help a pitcher -- film them in warmups, read opponent scouting reports, make in game adjustments, etc. Also to know when to leave them alone. We need to get Gibson and Diamond straightened out before even thinking about Meyer coming up. Lets hope Deduno can keep it going. It will be worthwhile signing a big name pitcher once we got those guys on track. When that happens we will be contending again in no time. Stay positive!
  4. Safe travels and may there be no more deployments. Remember its easier to ask forgiveness than permission. Twins also play in Colorado before the all star break - Coors field is a fantastic experience and Denver is not far from your base, in Texas distances.
  5. Thank you for pointing this out. One thing that bothers me is Gardenhire's relationship with Aaron Hicks, after the Twins basically handed him the CF job. It's inexcusable instead of harnessing that confidence and coachability he publicly put him down at every opportunity for not being "old school" enough. A guy like Gardy needs to adjust to what the "kids these days" are like. Bottom line is Gardy may have been great with a group of veterans, give him his due, but (among other things) he's not a guy who has demonstrated patience with prospects.
  6. Thanks for sharing -- do you feel this is a meta-signal sent out by the Twins that there will be a very significant and positive change made about who directs the talent going forward? Or is it just Molitor arranging his own interviews?

    Wow!

I've got to think this salary bubble will burst sometime..
  8. I can agree with much of what you say, until this: I have to take exception to this statement. Here is what bothers me and a lot of people about the current "Gardy has nothing to work with" train of thought -- the flipside of the "no manager can win with this team" argument is "no manager could have lost with the earlier teams" and if we had a WS Ring in there, I think this whole debate would look different. Here is what we had in the 2000s, not to mention some weak AL Central competition most of those years: - Joe Mauer, 3 batting titles and 3 Gold Gloves - Justin Morneau, MVP 2006, - Mauer, MVP 2009 - Johan Santana, Cy Young 2004, 2006, - Joe Nathan 260 saves in 7 seasons - Torii Hunter, perennial gold glove Ex-Twin Honor roll: - Matt Garza, Delmon Young, ALCS MVPs - RA Dickey, 2012 Cy Young Michael Cuddyer, 2013 NL batting champ (let's hope!)
  9. Just what we need, another mediocre Met from the mid 80s. And I see the guy has a ton of baggage. Molitor would be a much better choice in my opinion. Molitor cares about the players and has a good head. He would bring in good coaches. Lack of managing experience wouldn't be an obstacle. Much of the on-field stuff is drills and mentoring, which he has been doing with our prospects anyway, and I'm confident he could fill out a line up card. Molitor also has "Minnesota ties" which throughout this thread has usually been an argument in favor.
  10. I don't know how many times I've got to beat it into these guys' heads seems to be Gardenhire's most common lament. So yeah, he's lost the clubhouse. Hard to get that back once you've lost it.
  11. I do agree, if anybody it will probably be Steiny (yawn), but... Let's flip this around -- on this thread and other threads, what's your animus towards Molitor? Back in the day, I pulled for Molitor over Gardenhire. But Gardy won me over (until about 08 or 09). Looking back I'd say Molitor could have done at least as well as Gardy and not been as intimidated by the absolutely mediocre Yankees every single season. The experience angle is overrated and won't swing many people considering Molitor's knowledge of the game etc. And for the record, I'm not necessarily in Molitor's corner anymore. I'd definitely take him over Gardenhire though. But again, why get so animated when someone mentions him?
  12. Gladden would do great, he can outmanage the current manager any night he wishes.
  13. The idea of bringing Jake as a bench coach next year is fabulous, if he's as smart as his brother is good. Also we need some (more than a token one) Latin guys (but who, I have no idea). I don't think Molitor's lack of experience disqualifies him -- he's been in enough clubhouses where I think he could do just fine.
  14. After 2001, TK left with class, acknowledging it was time for him to step down. Gardenhire could have done this same thing after 2012. He could have taken a paid year off (2013 final year of contract) and even as an old school type, could probably have come back fresh with another organization if he wanted. Yet by most accounts he has kept a white knuckle death grip on this job based on some prior promise made by Pohlad long ago. So I've got to think Gardy's put himself in a box if he is finally forced out -- other organizations will really think twice before hiring a guy like this. Plus, he screams at his players. Maybe one of these days he adapts, who knows.
  15. It would be epic, but in a sad way, if Gardy was coaching for his 1,000 win on the final day of the season.
  16. I think you are on to something. Gardy has always said Anderson will be his pitching coach but maybe the Front Office tells Gardy he is more than welcome to manage another year, but without Anderson and with whole new coaches of the FO's choosing, to include Molitor (who Gardy has always seen as a threat) and a couple of Latin coaches (who by their absence apparently make Gardy uncomfortable). I think that's an offer Gardy can't refuse/accept.. quite a state we are in, with the field manager driving the direction of the whole organization. This would be a natural progression from last year's coach firings. I've gotta believe the status quo this year is untenable.
  17. I thought it over. I think part of it is Gardy is just out of things to say.
  18. +220 for you if he stays. I'm getting vibes that he's done. I'll take the -100, in other words I'd bet $220 to win $100. ----- all gaming here hypothetical, of course!
  19. My take on Sano's incident: praise in public, punish in private. With the background you gave us it just doesnt seem like the showboating was such a big deal. Just what we need is Sano resenting the Twins organization for a perceived embarrassment.
  20. No trade value, but at this stage he would be a very good bench/utility guy for a contending NL team - pinch hitter, fourth or fifth outfielder, emergency catcher only, and the guy has baseball sense if nothing else. But Terry Ryan must know something we don't, because last summer he signed Doumit through 2014. Your guess is as good as anyone's what we are going to do with him next year.
  21. I'm sorry they couldn't work something out with your fairly reasonable request. No doubt they are turning down other existing season ticket holders for similarly minor reasons. Twins ownership must still think it has the leverage, even on those empty seats you asked about.
