  1. I wasn't trying to make this a technical argument. Basically what I said was that a lot of teams have at least one OF who is average both at the plate and in the field. Twins don't have that person. Teams with deficiencies are actively seeking to upgrade. Chicago got Adam Eaton. JD Martinez went to Detroit last year and this year Cespedes. Martinez might or might not turn out to be a league average fielder or hitter but I don't think Detroit is worried about LF this year. I think the Twins are being incredibly passive by signing the Alex Presley and Shane Robinson types. It feels to me like the Twins are just assuming that Buxton is eventually going to save the day for everyone.
  2. I made an assumption. I will follow up.
  3. You see these guys up close so I take it at your word that Pelfrey is a classy guy. I've said before, one of the best things about this site is that there are writers who remain positive and interpret things in the best possible light. That said, I wouldn't call Pelfrey's comments classy, though not really out of line, either. By now he probably regrets making them the way he did. I'm sure he's disappointed but I also think he is in the dark about his abilities. He's had the entire offseason to come to grips with a potential demotion, if that's what he wants to call it. Baseball players make obscene amounts of money to play baseball, and in return, fans like me will criticize and take pot shots. Minnesota has pretty good fans overall. If Pelfrey pitches well out of the bullpen all of us will be back on his side again and want him in the game.
  4. "Tommy Milone: why the hell not." What an endorsement! Meanwhile, back in AAA,...
  5. A lot of teams have outfielders who can both hit and field their position at league averages. Twins enter another year without having such an outfielder. Outfield seems to be another area the Twins are marching to a different beat from the rest of the league. Escobar is not an outfielder. I also wonder if Hicks wouldn't have been a better choice for 25th man than Nunez, if outfield defense depth would have been a bigger consideration. I am concerned that the Twins are putting too much faith in Buxton's ability to fix this mess for them.
  6. Gardy took the team to the ALCS his first year, and Kelly won the World Series, so I'm setting a high bar for Molitor
  7. Is the commissioner familiar with the steroid era? Perhaps batting averages are below their historical pre-1990s averages (.260 or so), but I don't know if offense overall is down. His top issue should be replay reform I would think?
  8. Still a great guy in the clubhouse, I bet.
  9. I do think the "in two years" promise has largely been media-fueled (looking at you, LENIII). Still, it wasn't unreasonable a year and a half ago to expect that Alex Meyer and Miguel Sano would have been top contributors going into this season. Sano's setback was a bummer. With Meyer they need to just send him out there, rather than wait for the perfect moment to present itself.
  10. thanks Thrylos. It's good to get a little reassurance.
  11. R.I.P. 97 mph fastball What is the back story on this? You and many others had this guy highly rated.
  12. Another question is: which of Hughes, Nolasco, Santana, or Gibson moves to the bullpen when Meyer is promoted into the rotation?
  13. On MLB I'm seeing all of the Boston base hits basically saying "line drive to Oswaldo Arcia in left"... Can anyone fill in the blanks? Are they ropes or is he not making plays? Just curious.
  14. Because once upon a time, Stauffer was a first round pick...
  15. Did we win the World Series last year and I missed it?
  16. I think moderate Republicans will need to send a courageous sensible Republican candidate out onto the presidential campaign trail to take the bullets. And support that guy to the very end. And then send another moderate out the next time around. Guys like Pawlenty or Mitch Daniels had a real chance to defeat Obama in 2012, but those guys had no hope in the primary season. So my opinion is that moderate Republicans created this beast, and they will be the only ones who can put it back in the cage. Otherwise this clown show will go on indefinitely.
  17. Well, I count 7 out of 7 properly spelled words, so this one might have some validity.
  18. Makes sense that they might not want Burdi to push too hard and risk injury in his first spring training. So they tell him he's starting the season in AA and he should just get acclimated and enjoy himself.
  19. Me too. He's made a decent income playing a game he loves. I've got to think he was allowed to start these games as nothing more than a professional courtesy. He was never going to win the 5th starter job this year. He might find success in the bullpen and change his tune.
  20. Do the teams really bring so few players on these road trips? Just trying to learn
  21. I just glanced at the MLB play by play but thanks for the extra color. I will try to ask this delicately: but was Hicks removed from the game as part of that mid-inning double switch that put Escobar in the outfield?
