  1. I'm sure Milone is a great guy, but this is over, right? I mean, the three year flirtation has reached its foregone conclusion, right? Right?
  2. Milone-Hosmer...Molly gets the lefty-lefty matchup he wanted. (100% sarcasm)
  3. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat, but it might be too late to get on the ballot in some states.
  4. FYI: Schafer batted lead-off in his final game with the Lancaster Barnstormers back on May 31st. http://www.pointstreak.com/baseball/boxscore.html?gameid=328045 You're welcome. .
  5. Yes, there are warnings against trusting defensive metrics as reliable until three full seasons of data is collected. However, I will still compare UZR/150 with small and unequal numbers of innings, because at least it's something. Take it or leave it! For example, should we start Danny Santana at shortstop full time throughout 2017 and 2018 to decide if he should be our starting shortstop in 2019? After all, we only have that one season of data on him.
  6. Baseball transcends fiction, again. http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2016/09/26/203513026/dee-gordon-paid-tribute-to-jose-fernandez-with-a-hr http://sports.cbsimg.net/images/visual/whatshot/JF3-092616.jpg
  7. Well I am only doing back-of-the-envelope stuff here. DRS is fine but what I dislike is that it looks like a counting stat, when really it's a rate stat. In general I have latched on to the UZR/150 measure because I have seen other respected commenters on the interwebs use that measure. I agree Mauer is top five defensively in all of baseball.
  8. At this moment Fangraphs lists him 25 of 49 in UZR/150 for first basement with 200 innings (Vargas has 217.0 innings played at first). So, right at the midpoint. I've seen him higher on the list at earlier points--possibly because he would have had fewer innings with more first basemen below him. By the way, Mauer is listed at 20 of 49 and Byung-Ho Park is 2 of 49 on that list. Which is no surprise as Park won fielding awards in Korea. Small sample, obviously.
  9. "The jocks vs. nerds dynamic that took root in the 1990s and 2000s encouraged smart people to pick sides when the meaningful divide was the curious vs. incurious." Sounds right to me.
  10. Fair. But I'm noticing that all this losing has caused a messed up media culture that turns its fans against its best players. Maybe I'm seeing things that aren't there. But look at how many people dislike Mauer. For what? I have drank the anti-Mauer koolaid myself. Perkins is getting the business too from people like Morris now. People are already turning on Sano. If Sano becomes full time DH, how many chocolate cakes will he eat in the clubhouse between innings if he's not in the field? Reusse and LaVelle will surely investigate for us. On a side note, I do like how Provus and Gladden generally have Sano's back as a young third baseman, but also call it like it is when he makes an error. Maybe in a roundabout way the added personal scrutiny will help to motivate Sano. Even if this offseason for him is a repeat of last offseason, I'm still making him my starting 3B going into spring (I haven't gotten a call back from St. Peter about my PBO application, so don't set that in stone yet). I sincerely hope not.
  11. Mauer and Vargas are both plus fielders at first base, so there's that. For as big and heavy as Vargas is, he doesn't seem to get hurt in the act of making a routine baseball play, like 90% of the other guys on this team do.
  12. http://www.pavekmuseum.org/100sign.jpg
  13. Exactly. If it "happens all the time" then it's not worth mentioning. Instead, I think certain media members have turned this into a season-long narrative to stoke the fan base against him (it's working). It's unfortunate.
  14. I know neither of you are the type to troll or deliberately spread misinformation, but what is the source of both of your claims for this?
  15. Not sure I understand what's behind your question, but I am not bashing Sano. The errors Sano made earlier this season will follow him for a long time. Sano is responsible for them. Although it would be nice to hear the front office step up and assumed some responsibility too, for pulling him out of the DR last offseason and them dreaming he could become a good outfielder. My questions to you are: Have you been watching Sano lately? Who would you pencil in at third base going forward? Who would you play at short? What is your backup plan should your Plan A not work out?
  16. Maybe the mods can merge this thread with all the other smug Sano-bashing threads.
  17. Will this hire report to St. Peter--is that still the plan? If the Twins make an outside hire, I don't see what leverage they have insisting that Molitor remain manager. Personally I'd like to keep Molitor as an instructor. He got high marks for that.
  18. Meanwhile, in the "Do coaches make a difference?" category: Belichick and McDaniel are coaching the Patriots to a win tonight with exactly one quarterback on their roster for the game--a rookie quarterback, no less.
  19. This same thing happened a couple weeks ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WgK4FtRkTo
  20. Good to see Kevin Jepsen made it in this pantheon of heroes.
  21. I noticed that too. It was very gentlemanly of Tonkin to let Maybin sprint across the plate before Tonkin resumed his sprint to the plate for the throw.
  22. This has become one of those innings that cannot ever be looked away from or forgotten.
