    On topic: we rag on Dick a lot on this site, but he’s actually a really good announcer. Cory and Dan are great. Uecker is a legend but his radio calls lack imagination.

    Yes, I would, have before. Does that help, can we resume discussion? I’m not saying being quarantined would be easy. Anything but. I thought it would be part of the larger question of how to play the game safely for the next however many seasons.

    Proposing to “take you away from your family” is not the best choice of words, not something Manfred or Clark would say, so I will drop it. Instead of answering this question, I will point you back to where I already explained why it’s not a game changer and that more people than you probably realize have already done this, in some form or another. An inconvenience? Of course. Not a deal breaker.

    Yes, I am suggesting that. So... what do you mean? I’ve always suggested that the players should be able to choose to do that if they wanted to emphasize safety.

    Why would you phrase it like that? Seems like a loaded question. I wonder how many Latin American or foreign born players don’t get to see their families during the season as it is. But the irony for me is how each team stages an armed forces day to every season, to thank service members for putting themselves in harm’s way overseas. Now the players find themselves in the same situation. I honestly doubt very many would object to playing in a bubble for that short a time, if it came to that. I haven’t seen any good reporting on that question unless you have a link to share.

    As an expedient in these circumstances, I have no problem with a tie. Games that are suspended but not completed will occasionally stand as a tie anyway. You do see them once in a great while.

    Cheerleaders are a thing of the past, sorry, so please don’t even go down that road. I prefer the idea of maximum innings—say, games tied after 12 innings end in a tie. Or not starting an inning after four hours has passed (the occasional 9-inning game is reaching 3.5 hours now.) The runner on second is too gimmicky and interferes with the integrity of the scoring. Back in the day (March or April, when the world was still young) I also liked the idea of 7-inning doubleheaders, but lol we’ll be lucky to get a 50-game season at all at this point.

    Checking a CDC faq page, it looks like about half the people who get symptoms will show symptoms after about 4 or 5 days. But that research might be out of date or not applicable to the present time.

    I agree with both you and your daughter. Whether the public gives a damn or not, the public still does not understand how the virus is transmitted, and that’s a failure that transcends politics. I think taking advantage of summer and outdoor activities is wise. It seems like kids should be allowed to play little league, but that’s just me.

    I’m always surprised when I see this take — not talking about you specifically. Servicemembers are separated from their families for much longer periods than we are talking about here. We should also have a better idea about how long quarantines should last after a player finishes his season or leaves the team (or reports to the team). Originally it was 14 days, just to be on the safe side. Isn’t 3-5 days more realistic? I don’t know.

    I agree with what Doctor Gast was starting to say, that professional athletes would seem to be in the lower risk groups for getting sick from the virus even if they do acquire it. There are too many details we don’t know about the story. Honestly, I’m surprised the players haven’t accepted living and playing in a “bubble” for this season. We’re only talking 3-4 months at this point. (I make it sound like I think MLB should try to play through it, because it seems the other pro sports leagues will be doing so, or have already started doing so.)

    Wow. Thanks for posting. So I guess people are complicated. Maybe the statue should have never been raised, but when would that have been, 2009 or 2010, a much different time. Where do you draw the line? Griffith? Puckett? Hrbek? Do we really just want a bunch of Joe Mauer statues and no one else’s? The Griffith statue was going to come down eventually, whether it was today, five years ago, or later next month when an asteroid collides with Earth and wipes out all life. It served its purpose and it’s time to move on. Tip my cap to the fan who led this drive. One person can make a difference. /rant Edit: No, no asteroid is coming to wipe out life on Earth. That I know of.
