Not a Trump voter actually. I am a Republican and friends/family of plenty of Trump voters so I still find it offensive. Mostly the part about migrants being treated brutally at the border. I don't know anyone that actually wants that, Trump voter or not. Also just the general idea that Trump voters are happy because other's lives are worse, again I doubt that is the goal of the typical Trump voter. I for one am happy with his two appointments to the SCOTUS. I got a nice size tax cut and am LOL not wealthy by American standards anyways. I didn't vote for Trump the first time and can't imagine voting for him this time. Sometimes I just think this board goes after Trump supporters/outsiders tone when the tone is similar on both sides at times anyways.

I understand your point, but isn't it the same as assuming what the average Trump voter wants? Both are inflammatory to me and not actually intended to promote conversation.

I'm afraid I'm probably really hypocritical on this. In general I oppose the death penalty. I don't really know how I can say I'm pro-life and not be. However, if something sinister happened to one of my children I fear I would want justice in the form of death, whether that is justice or not. I can't quite reconcile it in my mind, but there are a few cases a year where I wish for the death penalty even though I'm opposed to capital punishment. I get that life without parole has no redeeming value, but I also can't stand the thought of putting family through letting the rapist/murderer walk because we have deemed them changed. I struggle with this issue a lot and have not come to grips with even how I feel. As an aside Netflix has a series called I Am a Killer that they recently added interviewing people who committed murder and the first episode is about a guy who literally says he killed a guy in prison to get put on death row because he couldn't stand living in prison any longer. It caused me to have even more conflicted feelings on all of it. I actually felt sympathy for the guy because our legal system had failed him at so many turns.

I figured it may be a tad too young, but after getting him involved in the celebrity death pool here, he is always looking for more games.

I recently wanted to ask about this, but also didn't want to bump a really old thread, but I am glad someone else did. How old is your son or rather how old do you think a kid should be to really grasp this? Very recently my 6 year old has become just pokemon crazed and he doesn't realize this app is a thing that exists quite yet, but I wasn't sure if it's something that I should introduce or hold off on.

I picked up Grand Austria Hotel and Kingdomino. A few of them were showing up out of stock but have come back. Also in the sale is Isle of Skye which I really enjoyed. It has a somewhat unique mechanism, to me anyway, in price setting and bidding. I also enjoy legends of andor (more of a dungeon crawl) with the right group that is in this sale.

I agree with all of this. Like Grits now surely that can be made the official symbol of the south.

I'm pretty familiar with history. Perhaps you should read the link I provided about the monument in my town. Not all monuments are created equal in my mind. If you don't agree, I would like to be able to agree to disagree, but calling the other person ignorant is hardly a place to start.
-
My usual caveat: I'm not a Trump supporter. I found his condemnation of the evil neo-nazis too light. Saying there were good people there is despicable morally corrupt position. As someone that grew up and lived in the south I feel like many of the views espoused here are too simplified or straight forward. I was happy when the Southern Baptist Convention amended their resolution to encourage members to stop flying confederate battle flags. http://www.russellmoore.com/2016/06/14/southern-baptists-confederate-flag/ Of course it's not exactly true that no one flew the battle flag until much later or that monuments were all created later. Mississippi adopted their flag 1894. Again like Moore from the article above it should be changed. My birthplace Bowling Green, KY (yeah not a terrorist attack President Trump) has this monument 1876. Should it be torn down? It's meant to honor the men that died. I don't know. I'm deeply conflicted, but I don't think that makes me a racist. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederate_Monument_of_Bowling_Green I also think some statues such as monuments of Generals are easier calls to remove. That really seems to represent more of the movement than the loss of life of individuals at least to me. Though I don't think mobs taking to the streets to tear them down is the right way to go about it. I wish we were in fact the United States of America, but that almost seems bordering on the threshold of irony which makes me terribly sad.

Might I suggest better RW friends. To be fair I didn't vote for Trump or Hillary, but there are definitely segments of traditionally Republican voters that aren't happy with Trump. I don't really get the outrage over Comey being fired. He had bungled enough on both sides of the aisles that I don't think removal was out of line. I can't help but feel like some of outrage is manufactured (not saying that's what people are doing here), but I am referring to Colbert last night. Depending on whose side did what totally frames whether this is worthy or cheer/praise or booing/shame. I am just over both sides doing that. It's annoying. Again I don't like Trump. The wall is stupid, the EO on religious freedoms was toothless, the budget was awful. If you want to see more conservative viewpoints that are disapproving of Trump look up Josh Jordan (political junkie), Matt Walsh (Blaze writer and Catholic blogger), and Russell Moore (President of Southern Baptist Convention). The first two can be over the top and you likely won't like many of their other opinions, but Dr. Moore is refreshing in this politically charged times. I just wanted to point out not all conservatives are Trump fans the same way I hope not all liberals are fans of everything democrats do no matter the implications or reasoning. It definitely feels lonely in the minority though.

I could use some input/advice. This will be my wife's and my ten year anniversary. I had booked a cruise for us, but she is now pregnant and Zika being a thing caused me to cancel those plans. Minneapolis is within driving distance for us and it's where we went for our honeymoon, so it's definitely a spot that will be appreciated by the wife. We are planning on coming the first week of May and catching some Twins games. We previously stayed in downtown Minneapolis and utilized the light rail. If I'm looking at the metro website correctly the light rail now runs all the way to St Paul? What are the pros/cons of staying in St Paul instead? I'm hoping for something memorable so either a nice suite at a hotel (preferably at a decent rate) or something quaint/unique. Any suggestions on where would fit that bill? As we get closer to our trip I'm sure I'll ask for more suggestions on places to eat/visit. Thank you for any advice!

Found this at the link below: @JonathanMayo @MLBPipeline When is the compensation pick lottery and who are the eligible teams to get a pick? — Jacob Larsen (@jakelarsen) July 13, 2016 Typically, the Competitive Balance Lottery has been held in late July. Introduced when the current Collective Bargaining Agreement began in December 2011, the lottery gave teams that have either one of the 10 smallest markets or 10 smallest revenue pools a chance to obtain extra Draft picks. Six picks have been awarded after each of the first and second rounds. Any teams that received revenue-sharing funds that didn't fit in either group of 10 have been added to the mix for the picks following the second round, or Competitive Balance Round B. I was using past tense because the future of the Lottery is a bit up in the air, because the current Agreement will expire this year and a new one will have to be collectively bargained by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association. As part of those negotiations, it's possible the format of the Lottery will change in 2017. As a result, both MLB and the MLBPA agreed to postpone the Lottery until Jan. 25, 2017, to give them time to adjust to any changes. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/189677192/pipeline-inbox-prospects-with-rising-stocks/

Castile shooting, police violence, race, etc side discussion
USMCTwin replied to Willihammer's topic in The Sports Bar
I think you are seriously underestimating the amount of crime law enforcement prevents. If you neuter cops it will be harder to recruit the best and the brightest. I know I wouldn't want to work in an environment that is at almost all times life threatening knowing I don't have the power or authority to defend myself. One thing to take a serious look into is crime rates and homicide rates in each of these areas after a cop kills someone that is highly publicized. The result is almost predictable at this point: Cops either are directed or choose to withdraw and crime rates and homicide rates sky rocket. I have no doubt that we need to do a better job training and recruiting law enforcement officers, but I also know that I don't envy the job they do on a daily basis. Even in this instance with Castile I have no idea whether the officer acted appropriately or not and I hope we do get answers that will allow us to have some healing, but you can tell the officer is even upset about shooting Castile. He knows what just transpired and is pretty visibly shaken by it. If the officer acted inappropriately I would definitely be in favor of prosecution, but I think we sometimes forget law enforcement officers are people too and for the most part they do a pretty fantastic job protecting the general public in my opinion. -
More of a sad note than anything: I'm watching the olympic trials and a commercial comes on and it's message was "For 17 days we are all United". That made me pretty disappointed even though I know it's true. It was just a different realization to hear it said out loud and not totally as a bad thing. Somehow that made me more discouraged with the state of the country than Trump/Hillary, police shootings/BLM, and ISIS/lone-wolf. Oh well. We can look forward to reuniting in two more years.

To be clear. I am not a Trump supporter and don't agree with that particular sentiment. I was just responding to Dave in how his supporters can rationalize their decision.
-
I think a lot of both Bernie's and Trump's support stems from people feeling betrayed by politicians in general. I understand the sentiment, but I feel like the analysis stopped there and didn't continue on to 'How will Trump be a good president'. I wish a republican had just been quicker to acknowledge the anger and disconnect from the general sentiment and to see if that could possibly slow Trump's wave. Unfortunately I think a lot of Trump supporters are similar to Ben Carson's ringing endorsement even if Donald Trump turns out to be not a great president it's just 4 years. If Trump were to win I would imagine we would get a lesson in change for change's sake is not always a good idea. And to think at one point I thought Kanye 2020 was a joke.

From what I read the officer traded fire outside the nightclub and when the terrorist went inside that is when the casualties started piling up, but I agree I don't necessarily want a bunch of people trying to do the job of law enforcement. Not to mention that it becomes a chicken or the egg argument. If there weren't such a proliferation of guns would the average citizen need a gun to protect themselves. I just understand where both sides are coming from on this and I don't see any easy answer or compromise. Though like I have mentioned before I think banning people being investigated by the FBI for terrorism or on the no-fly list should be an easy call and a good step to take.
-
That's not the narrative I usually see on facebook. Typically it's that shootings may happen, but if others are armed you could seriously limit the casualties. Not saying I agree. But, I suspect if no one is killed here you will see more memes suggesting that if people had guns in the Orlando attack that so many would not have died. Again not saying I agree with that line of thinking, but that tends to be what I see the pro-gun crowd suggesting. Similar to the 'Draw Muhammad' contest in Texas where two attackers opened fire and armed security guards returned fire. The only people killed were the two terrorists.
-
Trump tweeted that he is going to meet with the NRA about not letting suspected terrorists and people on the no fly list buy guns. Not sure if he is pandering, but totally seems possible he could change his mind and decide anyone who wants to restrict guns is evil. If this is one step we can take from the situation I think that would be a good start, whether or not it would have prevented this tragedy.

Collett has already told people after being drafted that he is for sure going to UK. I'm sure that could possibly change if we freed up enough money, but I don't see how we could allocate that much to him.
