  1. Even if we eventually "lost" we'd probably have to wait 4-5 years in order to tell unless [insert B- prospect here] was flipped for more assets.
  2. Here's what Met's fans think. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2015/7/27/9051045/new-york-mets-tyler-clippard-trade-casey-meisner#comments I think I'd have trouble giving up Hu or Gonsalves, but the fact that we have both of them plus guys like Lewis Thorpe and Berrios and Stewart who appear to be much closer....
  3. I guarantee the Twins were involved and got outbid on this one. How could we not have been? I wonder what the A's wouldn't take... Casey Meisner was the Mets' ninth-best prospect in Amazin' Avenue's midseason rankings. Meisner has split time this year between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the St. Lucie Mets. He has a 2.35 ERA in 111 innings across the two levels with 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings and just 2.2 walks per nine. http://www.amazinavenue.com/2015/7/27/9051045/new-york-mets-tyler-clippard-trade-casey-meisner
  4. I'd have traded cash and say... Felix Jorge to the A's for Clippard who instead went to the Mets for Casey Meisner. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=meisne000cas
  5. The whole theory behind money ball is keying in on traits and trends that other teams (large market teams) miss. New stats keep being created and old stats tweaked in order to find more accurate or more consistent performance evaluators/predictors. If a team has more accurate metrics that give them an advantage in player evaluation, they would be fools to share it with their competition. I would think then, that the best organizations measured by new metrics might not be ranked the same under future metrics, just as traditional stats and current metrics aren't always the same. But then we'd need a sabremetric to evaluate the sabremetricians... "GM-WAR"? I'll see if the trademark's available..
  6. Oh I agree on not giving up on him, since we already have him. I'm saying if I was another team, I wouldn't bet on it in terms of trading for him. If I'm the Twins I don't bet on it by counting on him. Personally, I think he's taken a big step forward. However, his defense is a bit shaky at times and unless he starts hitting for a ton of power, his bat is sub-par. Will his power improve? Coin flip?
  7. If we're dealing Rosario, it may behoove us to get him a few games at 2nd or 3rd to increase his value to teams needing a 2B or super-utility Zobrist kind of player. His bat profiles more of 2B than a corner. I can't imagine Hicks having much value on the trade market. He's having a career year right now, which is essentially Dozier with 1/4 the power. On the other hand, if the rest of baseball still sees him as an elite defender (certainly not) and 5-tool prospect (neither the tools nor "prospect" really fit) then we should deal him before they really look at it.
  8. Can we see what KC gave up before we give up on winning the division? Cueto would not be the first ace to change NL to AL and struggle.
  9. Ok, but if he gives up another one, I'm blaming you for doubting the power of the baseball gods.
  10. Hmmm... feel like that hr was my fault...
  11. Nice to see milone bounce back if only for a few innings.
  12. Berrios and Rogers are the only ones I see as potential upgrades from even Fien and Boyer. My thought is that Duensing AND Fien both rushed back from their injuries. Fien needs to go back to the DL. Boyer is simply overworked. He wasn't even in baseball last year, no? Duensing is fine with the exception that Rogers might be slightly better... maybe. Big risk to take when Duensing is pitching well and has experience, including playoff experience. Berrios has taken time to adjust every time he's jumped a level. Presumably he'll be a better pitcher than Fien and Boyer. But I wouldn't bet that he is right now. I haven't watched Duffy pitch enough to say whether he's an upgrade, but based on his initial struggles with AAA, I would guess probably not. Dominating guys who aren't good enough to bat 7, 8, 9 in a major league line-up doesn't do a ton for me. Now Clippard on the other hand... I'm not against going to an 8 man pen at this point to try to keep arms fresh and give new guys a shot.
  13. I bet my buddy that the Twins would have 2 or more 20 HR plus guys at the beginning of the year. Dozier's there. Arcia and Vargas flopped. Sano was called up too late. Basically Plouffe and Hunter need to start mashing!
  14. Which means we should move up__________ because he's been absolutely stinging the ball? I am fine with Hunter getting some days off because it's the middle of summer, it's hot, and he's 40. He's not been super productive of late. But much like SS, C, Pen, 1B, DH, now 3B and starting staff... basically everyone who wasn't an All-Star, I'm not sure we have much better options compared to trying to rest him when we can and hoping he gets hot again. Hunter has always been a streaky hitter. I'm not for replacing one of our best hitters with another streaky hitter just because of a slump/ assumptions due to his age. Now getting him some rest while getting Arcia some AB's makes more sense to me. For that matter... Rosario looks a little run down of late as well. A lot of guys need to play better right now. Winning cures all. The team looks a bit tight. Arcia was a spark last season.
  15. From my hometown of Faribault, Minnesota. Current White Sox reliever, Jake Patricka.
  16. We traded for Scott Diamond in March. We're approaching the 2/3rds mark of the season. Braves should take what they can get at this point. If not, I agree, Graham still offers some utility in the pen, no more or less than Tonkin I'd imagine.
  17. What would Jimmy Rollins cost as a comparison? I also feel like we're giving up on esco, and santana too for that matter, when both are probably due for a rebound. Esco if he gets consistent playing time, santana may be slightly rebounding already.
  18. Disagree, Mauer is signed though '18, Perkins through '17. Meaning if we want to re-sign them or trade them, it should happen next season for Perk, or the season after for Joe. Tulo is signed through 2020 at least. THAT is a long term deal. Dozier is signed through '18. We have pitchers coming off the books like crazy during that stretch, but will likely need arms to replace them. Gibson could get a huge payday. I'm not sure Meyer, May, Milone, Gonsalves, Hu, Berrios, and Stewart will ever be as good as the current rotation. Maybe, but odds are we will need to spend. By the end of Tulo's contract, we will likely be looking to extend Sano and or Buxton to giant deals, and Berrios, May, Milone, etc. might have earned a large contract by then as well.
  19. Tulo is a huge immediate upgrade. I have a little trouble stomaching the contract when guys like Perkins and Mauer will either have to be extended or traded soon, and guys like Dozier, although extended, and Plouffe will be arb eligible, and then the Sano's, Buxton's, and Gibson's of the world will likely be looking for paydays as well. Providing we don't want to wait to see FA or arbitration, we're going to have to make a lot of expensive decisions in the near near future. Re: Nolasco being traded. Can players be traded from the 60 day DL? A quick search showed yes, but you need commissioner approval? Sounds like a dumb fantasy football rule.
  20. Meanwhile O'Rourke hasn't given up a hit... Can we ride enough hot hands to make it work? First of all, I am hugely disappointed in Alex Meyer's inability to be even marginally effective being a 2-pitch reliever. If he can find something, that would be ideal. Berrios has to move to the pen soon. He should be watching his innings especially if he's going to help us into October. Chapman makes us an instant World Series contender IF the rotation holds up. May must be getting shopped heavily. I can't imagine a reason why he wasn't used this weekend unless we were trying to get a team an extra start out of him.
  21. Regarding Arcia, I never thought I'd see fans taking Hicks over Arcia. If we could be patient with Hicks, we should be patient with Arcia. Yes he has power, yes he has hit for average. He's shown the willingness to learn, hit the ball opposite field, and try to work on his discipline. More than anything, he wants to win. I saw him carry a team of losers on his back for a week last year before Plouffe whiffed on a bunt and Arcia sprained his ankle in the ensuing run down. Assuming Hunter doesn't play for another 5 years, who else has his fire and leadership? Sano has the charisma, but Arcia has the fire. Re: Catching opportunities, the options are either too expensive or not much of an upgrade. Suzuki is struggling, but he's having a career worst year. He could rebound, or he might be gassed/too old. I think I role Zuke as uncomfortable as that feels. But we do have to get the pen some help. Fien can't be healthy, Boyer is over worked.
  22. On Meyer, my point was that the guy who maybe would have helped him the most, we might have driven out of town on the points of our pitchforks. Allen has done a great job with the staff, but it would have been nice to see Anderson get a crack at Meyer. Although he couldn't do much with Liriano.
  23. Plus isn't that what Eddie Guardado is for (splitter)? According to Pelf anyway... Of course, May credited someone altogether less popular for his turn around, Rick Anderson. So maybe pitching to contact does work if you mix in more change ups and have better overall talent? Of course, Meyer seems to be struggling with both walks and contact... Now that I think more about it, I think Arcia could end up being as good a hitter as say Carlos Gomez who was himself a phenom. I still feel Arcia will figure things out eventually both as a hitter and fielder.
  24. Sano and Buxton were super-elite talents coming through the minors. They might have been 1-2 for the last couple years straight if they'd stayed healthy. Short answer, we don't have any "next" Sano's or Buxton's in our organization. Maybe Javier eventually. Jay can be good. Burdi can throw 100 within the vicinity of home plate and snap a slider. That is phenom type stuff, but he's flawed as well. I'll still go with Burdi, with the caveat that we may be seeing a pitching phenom develop before our eyes in the Bigs. Hint, best pitcher in the rotation, has not been demoted to pen.
  25. Right! I think I liked it better being a lurker. I could just wait for others to look up stats. I'll admit advanced stats definitely add to my enjoyment of the game. That's the great thing about baseball. There are an endless number of angles to analyze and enjoy whether your a numbers guy or an eye-test guy!
