  1. What I don't get is that not a single team felt he was worthy of a roster spot, yet many people here are upset we let him go. Do these posters know something that all of MLB does not know? Personally, I don't have even remotely close to enough information to judge this decision. The information we do have would suggest we are better off giving the AAA innings to the SPs already in the Rochester rotation.
  2. It is about as shocking as someone jumping to the conclusion that the decison was made based on salary.
  3. I doubt those who are not in the camp believing this team is going to be even worse are making any assumptions about the players we had last year improving. The only loss offensively was Morneau and he certainly was not a difference maker. And it seems reasonable to believe that it is more likely that Hicks and Arcia improve vs regress. Pinto had no impact in terms of wins and lossess. They had a terrible record the last month of the season. The most reasonable assumption IMO is that they will remain the same offensively and could be slightly better if Hicks plays to his potential. That would be a big boost at the top of the order where they got absolutely no production last year. I doubt Willingham could be worse than last year but I suppose it is possible. Is it safe to say the pitching SHOULD be much improved. If the offense is the same and the pitching is much better, I don't know how you come to the conclusion this team is going to be worse than the last three years. They can also improve defensively quite a bit by keeping Willingham in a DH role. Even Kubel is quite a bit better than him in the OF. There is also a reasonable chance they make a trade or pick up someone off waivers in the next week or so.
  4. They should be a little better this year. Their SP was horrible last year. Nolasco and Hughes are going to help. A fully recovered Pelfrey should have a better year (start to finish) as compared to last year. The 5th starter is also not going to be a AAAA pitcher. Gibson/Deduno will be better than the 5th SP of last year. The offense might not be any better but they can't hardly be worse than last year. I believe we will see a better version of Aaron Hicks this year. The big question is will we get something remotely close to the 2012 version of Willingham or will he play at or even below 2013 levels. He has looked horrible this spring.
  5. The question on my mind ... Regardless of his ceiling, is his relative trade value as a center fielder too keep him as a corner OFer? Personally, I would love to see Kepler, Walker or Harrison really step-up this year an force their way on to the roster by mid 2015. The team would probably be better of IMO if Hicks was used as a trade chip for whatever we are missing at that point. There would be no need to rush. The FO could wait for just the right deal for a SS (if Santana does not improve his D) or a front of the rotation starter. The real question on his ceiling might be what he can bring back in trade once Buxton arrives. He should have more value than Span, right?
  6. They seem really high on Santana. He just is not ready defensively to play MLB. I think he gets a shot as soon as he gain consistency in the field. I recorded the St. Louis game and their announcers we extremely impressed with Florimon in the field.
  7. Great post. Winning in this league is primarily predicated on drafting and development. You can’t correct the problem you cited (several years of bad drafting) in a couple years. The core problem would appear to be corrected based on the current condition of the farm system. Of course, this is a relative statement. If you are the Dodgers or Yankees you have an extra $100M in payroll budget over the Twins and $150M over the Tampa Bay/Oakland. Obviously, spending practices and strategies are going to vary widely given the enormous difference in revenue. . Why anyone in the FO would make any statement of substance is beyond me. You can’t win with the fan base. No matter what you say, a substantial percentage is going to disagree. Twins Daily is good proof of this point. Anthony should have said that the determination of who to take North has been made even more difficult because of the struggles of some players this spring. He actually could have went on to say that increases the chances they will make a mistake. He should have acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and in broad terms let the fans know they are doing to address this situation.
  8. Seth, I have to disagree. There is an old saying ... Praise in public and criticize in private. Mr. Anthony is probably a very talented guy. I don't know nearly enough about him to offer an opinion as to if he should succeed Mr. Ryan. However, I do know that you have to know how to deliver a message without tearing down individuals if you are going to be an effective leader. He could have simply said "we have not had players step-up as we had hoped". What was to be gained by flogging specific players. You would think Ozzie Guillen's example would have taught the rest of league to avoid this behavior.
  9. If they would have spent every penny of the 52% that people cry about constantly they still would not be a 500 team. Man, it gets tiring to hear this constant squaking about them not spending money. Why don't the other rebilding teams spend every available dollar. Is there ownership cheap and their FO incompetent? A win in free agency cost around $7M. So, someone is going to have to explain to me how we pick-up 30 wins through free agent spending.
  10. You make a good point. This had not occurred to me. The assumption was this plan was part of keeping Gibson on the 25 man roster. I guess May would have to stay at AA. It could still be a problem if Meyer, Johnson, Gilmartin, Darnell, Dean andf Hermsen are slated for Rochester. However, based on last year, I am not too worried if Hermsen is in the pen.
  11. Actually, I got the idea to stretch out Pressly from Blyleven during the broadcast last night and it has nothing to do with who are the starters in the short-term. This strategy has little or nothing to do with starters for this year. We have a lot of bullpen options. If you are going to send Pressly down, what does it hurt to give him more innings for developmental purposes and see how he fares back in a starter role. Part of Blyleven's point was that Sanatana was a rule 5 player who followed a very similar path. Does Pressly have the same type of ceiling as Santana ? Highly unlikely but the Astros did not think enough of him to protect him from the rule 5 draft and the Marlins wanted Jared Camp (who never made it to the ML level) ahead of Sanatana. I don't think it makes sense to assume we know exactly what Pressly can be just yet.
  12. I would love to see it too. Let's find out of Gibson can cut it or not. As for Deduno, he might just end the year as our best SP. I say go for it if they can get reasonable value for Correia. Man, did worley look terrible tonight. Maybe Johnson gets a shot if someone goes down or they could send Pressly down to be stretched out as a starter if they move Correia. This could be an opportune time to see if Pressly can start.
  13. Trading Correia makes sense to me if they feel Deduno is healthy. They can go north with Gibson as the 5th starter and use Diamond or Worley in long relief or send Gibson down until they find a way (trade or release) to resolve the situation woth Diamond / Worley.
  14. Great report and a also a very encouraging report. The first thing that jumps out is that Berrios grew and that his fastball has gained a couple clicks. That’s big. It seemed some scouts were cautious about his ceiling because he lacked height. It would sure be nice to see him start to track as a potential true #1. It would also be nice compensation for Cuddyer. I have thought (hoped) Gonsalves would be a steal from early on. Hopefully, that optimism comes to fruition. He has the frame to develop a bit more velocity. I will be watching him closely. He could be a very important part of a future contender. Meyer, Stewart, and Berrios should be solid. How big would it be if a couple from the group of Gonsalves, Eades, Jorge, Thorp, and Gibson reach their ceiling. The #5 pick hopefully figures in here too. Harrison’s improved physique is also very encouraging. That gives us more flexibility and more options. IT could help facilitate moving Hicks for pitching if he can play the outfield effectively. Of course, if he can stick at 3rd now it helps in the event Sano can’t stick at 3rd. It just nice to see the young man put in the work and even nicer that he appears to be more athletic for the effort.
  15. I think the Twins feel like Santana could be ready by next year. The Twins will not contend until at least 2016. One WAR cost $7M on the FA market so contention is not going to happen until the next wave is productive. It would take an incremental $175M+/year to contend via free agency and that's after whatever they spent this year. In that context, Santana gets a shot next year. If he gets it together the 2016 version of Santana is probably as good or perhaps better than the 2016 version of Drew. Sanatana also offers a solution beyond 2017 and I like the odds of the 2017 Snatana being better than the 2017 Drew.. We also gain the 46th pick plus whatever we get for Florimon. We might even be able to package Florimon and another asset to a team needing salary relief and get a very good player. Then, there is the roughly $10M/yr that could go toward a true #1 which right now is the biggest obstacle between this team an contention. Now, IF Drew stays healthy you MIGHT be able to trade him when Sanata is ready but it is not hard to see why the Twins do not take on this risk at this stage in the development of a contender if Drew is holding out for three years. One year also does not make sense. Two, it depends on how you value 2-4 wins over the next couple years vs building a contender.
  16. A lot of people said that about Drew Butera too.
  17. I can see both sides of this argument. Perkins is a leader, recruiter of free agents and he is pretty darn good with the media too. That has value. Cuddyer filled this role very well. Unless I misunderstand the deal, we are only on the line for one more year with an option for a second year and the salary is below that of other relievers of his caliber. The other side of the argument has some merit too. When you are as bad as our favorite team and a couple years away from getting better, you dump all of the assets you can (IE Astros) and further build the farm system. Perkins is our best trade chip. There was also minimal value in extending him so there is merit in the position that this adds risk with little value.
  18. I wonder how other teams (Braves) would value Deduno?
  19. So, why have the Cubs, Pirates, and Astros not followed the blueprint above? The Astros payroll is about $60M less than the Twins last I checked. They should have made gigantic strides this year if the pratices described above are viable. What GM of a last place team had done what is described above in the last 20 years.
  20. Nolasco / Pelfrey / Hughes / Correia Deduno if he is healthy / Worley or Diamond if not Trade Correia ASAP and bring up Gibson Would also trade Deduno for a high ceiling A+/AA SP if possible to make room for Gibson. Perkins / Burton / Fein / Swarzak / Duensing / Thielbar / Worley or Diamond I would trade any of the relievers (including Perk) if the price is right. Suzuki / Pinto (50/50) Mauer / Parm Dozier / Escobar Florimon / Escobar Plouffe / ? OF / Arcia / Parm / Willingham / Presley CH / Hicks / Presley DH / Willingham / Parm The 13th guy would ideally be able to back-up 3rd or Escobar could be the back-up for 3rd. That might favor Bartlett as the 13th guy but he has yet to get a hit this spring. Romero seems like a stretch but at least he would be a RH bat of the bench. Has he ever played in the OF?
  21. I am not sure about Kubel but I would bet you get your wish on the other 12. Losing Sano for the season and the Rosario suspension nullified a big part of the improvement I was hoping to see this year. It was really hoping to see Willingham traded and Sano promoted by mid-season. Plouffe becomes a utility player and we make a decision on Parmelle / Presley by mid-season with Rosario taking one of those roster spots assuming he had performed in AAA.
  22. I might be wrong but representation does not seem like it is the barrier to something getting done in favor of the MilB players. Everyone is quite aware of the circumstances. So, their representatives can present their desire for an increase of $10K/yr per player. The players do the math and say damn, that is between $60 anmd 80K of the pie per player on the 25 man roster and it gets voted down. Am I missing something here?
  23. We would all love to see Gibson but we can't just dump Deduno or Worley without getting value in return. Maybe they can deal Correia at the end of spring training or shorty after. However, it that does not happen, I hope and believe the F/O will give Gibson a month or two in AAA while they find a reasonable return for either Deduno or Worley. The situation will resolve itself. There will be a market for Deduno and/or Worley if they perform well. If not, go ahead a turn them loose for whatever you can get and bring up Gibson. Personally, I think Deduno could be our 2nd best starter. The best case scenario in my mind is that they all perform and Correia is traded at the end of spring training. Deduno and Gibson start with Worley going to the pen. Worley can be the spot starter and perhaps be traded at the deadline for value. Darnell takes over for Worley.
  24. I am looking forward to tracking the progress of the system as a whole this year. Bummer about Sano and Rosario but I am hoping for a couple of the guys outside the top 100 type prospects step-up this year and prove they are potentially high impact MLB players. I think those players developing take us from a bright future to something potentially really special. Danny Santana and AB Walker are two that I will keep a close eye on. Santana because of need and Walker because there seems to be a large gap between his floor and ceiling. For SPs, Gonsolves is a guy that might end up being a real steal and Thorpe could be a guy that moves up the rankings quickly. Eades is also interesting. Some people still believe he has #2 stuff. Who do you like to move up the rankings?
  25. I don’t see how it is feasible to include MiLB players in the players union. There are far more MiLB players. What would stop them from insisting they get the same minimum salary as a MLB player? Where housing is concerned, my pie in the sky idea would be for the teams to build identical housing facilities. It would be highly efficient. Only one architectual fee. Building maintenance would be more efficient. That would allow them to transfer ownership with minimal fuss or they could form an entity to own and manage all of the facilities. There are a number of things that could amke this very financially beneficial for all parties. And, players would no exactly where everything is as they move through the different stops on their way to the majors. I don't see minimum wage as being a viable approach to this problem. For one, when you add back the meal allowance, they have to be around or above minimum wage. Even if they were slightly below, another $100/month is not going to be that beneficial. And, if the teams really wanted to defeat that approach, all they would have to do is set the required hours of participation to be games. Practice time and facilities would be a service provided by the team for those who wished to increase their chances of being a MLB player.
