  1. How knows? Maybe they might have a lot of confidence in Thorpe and believe he will be here in 2019 via a promotion to AAA to start the season and then a promotion in the likely event someone is hurt or ineffective. Where with Stewart, they are auditioning him for a 40 man spot. Nothing more than a guess but there are scenarios which could make sense for Stewart instead of Thorpe right now.
  2. The Reds signed 3B Eugenio Suarez through 2024.They also have Austin Riley at AAA. He is the 3rd ranked 3B and #43 overall prospect on MLB.com. What about moving Sano to 1B and acquiring one of these two players from the Reds?
  3. It would be great if he actually has something new to offer. Wouldn't it be a nice surprise to find we have a BP asset for next year we did not know about. I doubt this is the case but I will be watching and hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
  4. Well, you attacked / insulted an entire group of media and executives who "think they are smart" when in fact you did not know the situation or bother to check. All you would have had to do was check the players profile (below). Instead, you assume a lot of people are just stupid. May 28, 2018 San Francisco Giants selected the contract of RHP Dereck Rodriguez from Sacramento River Cats. April 3, 2018 RHP Dereck Rodriguez assigned to Sacramento River Cats from Richmond Flying Squirrels. March 23, 2018 RHP Dereck Rodriguez assigned to Richmond Flying Squirrels from Sacramento River Cats. January 25, 2018 RHP Dereck Rodriguez assigned to Sacramento River Cats. November 15, 2017 San Francisco Giants signed free agent RHP Dereck Rodriguez to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. November 6, 2017 RHP Dereck Rodriguez elected free agency. June 23, 2017 RHP Dereck Rodriguez assigned to Chattanooga Lookouts from Fort Myers Miracle.
  5. Yah, what do those supposed professional journalists know and execs know. They don't have more information than us and they don't actually see the prospects live. They are not privy to the plans and work being done with these prospects. Oh wait, maybe they do have more information and access. Well, those qualifications they have to get those jobs, meaningless. Yep, they pay these execs a million plus a year "because they think they are so smart". Has nothing to do with education, experience, and having demonstrated managerial / leadership abilities. Anyone can do this job. That's why it pays a million+/year. You know that's not what they taught in economics courses I took but it must be true based on the things I see here. The same things were said about Berrios. There were people here who insisted we had to have him for the playoff push in a couple years ago and that he would probably be our best SP. Obviously, he was NOT ready but I guess its easy to ignore these examples when you are not the person held accountable for the decisions. Chargois was a mistake. They tried to sign Rodriquez according to the interview I heard with his father. Derek just decided to go to SanDiego. So, it had nothing to do with what they did not see..
  6. What did you want them to say? We got 11 players that will contribute to our future and we also got Logan Forsythe? That would really motivate Forsythe to contribute and be a positive presence in the clubhouse and the rest of players also would not appreciate such a slight of a fellow player. If you don't name Forsythe, who is the player that you think has no future. You either have to publicly demean Forsythe or say 12 players. If this kind of unprofessional action is really what you want from the team, the problem is your expectations, not the language the F/O elected to use here.
  7. No doubt there is value in a player being a great leader but who says leadership has to come from the best player. Was leadership considered (with any weight) in the recent class of HoF inductees? I seriously doubt it. Being a great leader is a plus but not a primary component in ranking the relative greatness of players, IMO. He does not have the bat to be a 1B in this late stage of his career but he certainly was great as a catcher and you have to give the man props for taking on a new position and becoming great defensively.
  8. If you believe Josh Donaldson has some miles left in him, we could sign him and move Sano to 1B. However, unless my eyes deceive me, Sano is moving quite a bit better having lost some weight. What will he look like another 20lbs lighter? He would be a huge asset if he can be be slightly above average defensively at 3B. That arm will help in getting to that level.
  9. None of them have had enough time with the new teams to implement any tweaks. They were traded and there has been an uptick in their performance. End of story. I seriously doubt there was any "development" done. The possible exception might be that the Dodger hitting coach said "hey Brian what's up with trying to pull every pitch on the outside edge of the strike zone."
  10. I assumed this went without saying and we all not what happens when we assume.
  11. Fair enough. I guess when they need room on the 40 man this should be addressed. It does not mean that it makes sense to give any of them a shot instead of drake. My guess is Belisle gets cut and Busenitz gets a shot but maybe they just don't believe in Busenitz.
  12. I am not sure I follow. There are lots of guys who are AAAA types. Teams don't just cut them. I guess the idea is to hope for a Max Muncy scenario.
  13. None of the AAA guys has been lights out. Moya / May are already here. I think the should jettison Belisle and give Busenitz a shot but he has not been great the past couple months. I am just not seeing any great concession in giving Drake a shot.
  14. What a perfect time for this experiment, right? Adrianza was considerably better when he was getting consistent playing time as was Escobar so let's not panic. We might already have the solution and there is a good chance we can resign Escobar in which case our utility IF is Adrianza. The bullpen is the black hole on this team. Trevor May coming back and performing well would be a big plus. Busenitz needs to be in the pen and used in a regular basis the rest of the season.
  15. I am fully on board with this concept. However, I have 2 questions. 1) Should we be trading Romero or Gonsalves given the very short list of SPs signed past 2019? 2) Will Littell and/or Stewart return players that can fill the holes we are discussing? Hopefully, they extend Gibson this winter. That would be very helpful to our 3-4 yr outlook. BTW ... I believe we have reason to be optimistic even though there are several "holes". Sano is looking quite a bit better. This had to be a humbling experience and chances are he will report to spring training in much better shape. You have to believe resigning Escobar is very high on their priority list and you would have to think we can get him if we are willing to pay market rate.1B is one of the easier positions to fill.May is looking pretty good so that would be a nice add to the BP.We have significant available dollars via expiring contracts.Garver is looking like he will fill one of lour holes pretty well.Jake Cave looks like part of the solution.Don't forget Polanco is back and looking pretty good too.I think there is a good chance quite a few of our holes fill themselves over the remainder of this season. Let's not panic yet. * While I am hoping, I hope last night was the start of Max Kepler being a big part of the solution. I am actually going to have a great time watching the remainder of the games if some of the question marks perform well, especially Sano / Buxton / Kepler Mejia, and Romero.
  16. I don't see Kershaw's AAV going up much. He is at $35M/yr. I assumed his play would be to secure more years at roughly the same AAV. That would be smart on his part if he could add 2-3 years because the market has gone away from paying big in the post prime years. He will be 33 following his last year under his current contract. Edited: I just looked at their payroll. Ryu and Kemp are both free agents as well. I would assume they go hard in on Ryu but use the 21.75M reduction from Kemp to fund other payroll needs. The key cost increase will probably be in arbitration cases but those are deep pockets. If they do sign Grandal, I would like to find a way to trade for one of their two highly ranked catching prospects. That might take a 3rd team but that would be a great acquisition.
  17. You make some good points. I did not realize Castro's injury made him questionable for next year. I suppose the Dodgers can afford Machado and Grandal. If Cruz could be signed on a 1 year deal, I'm on board. What about Justin Smoak? He was very good in 2017. Are the shifts getting him or is it the drop -off in hitters behind him in the line-up. Could Nelson Cruz still play 1st? He would be a great 1 year bridge to Rooker.
  18. The Dodgers have the #3 and #5 rated catching prospects in Ruiz at AA and Smith just got promoted to AAA. If they sign Grandal, these guys are blocked. The questions what could we offer them. Perhaps a 3 team trade?
  19. We just had a thread along the lines of why don't the Twins ever come up with a with a Max Muncy and then some of you go nuts over a move that has absolutely zero risk. This presumption that people talented enough to get a million dollar plus job a year while in their early 30s are idiots is incredibly naive. I would add that anyone with an economics background like Falvey understands value better than most, certainly more so than the people who don't understand the law of supply and demand dictates salaries.
  20. Ramos - Not if Garver continues to produce offensively at the same rate as Ramos. Garver has upside and I just don't like guys who can no longer run and plug up the bases. Adams - Having his best year but probably won't break 2 WAR and 2016-17 combined for 1.7 WAR. Interesting player. I don't think he moves the needle. Cruz - Sign me up if he could produce for 2 more years at a 900 OPS but it is so unusual for someone to continue to produce at his age that I am reluctant. Plus, DHs without positional flexibility are a liability. I could go either way with this one. Escobar - You bet and twice on Sunday!
  21. I like the creativity but I seriously doubt he takes a contract for half of what he can get guaranteed. That's a lot of money to put at risk. Having said this ... I would endorse making such an offer, WCS he turns it down.
  22. As of right now, my goals for next year for position players would be ... 1) Resign Escobar to play 2B 2) Monitor Sano this winter and make sure he reports to camp in great shape. 3) Sign Iglesias to play SS and move Polanco to 2B if we can't sign Escobar 4) Sign Justin Smoak for 1B and teach him to bunt. Address catcher if Garver does not maintain or improve the remainder of the year. I think an infield of Adams / Escobar / Polanco & Sano would look pretty darn good. The outfield has question marks but I would not sell at rock bottom with Buxton and Kepler. Cave is proving he can play so he is a good insurance piece and we need to get a good look at Wade this year. Kepler has hit both LH and RH pitching just not in the same year. The OF looks good if he can just put it together.
  23. That was the point. Perhaps an inarticulate way of making it but we need to solidify several aspects of this team before we go trading for 2 year assets. Remember when several posters insisted we needed to trade for LuCroy, Tulowitzki, and Sonny Gray because we were in a window of contention?
