  1. we do have a bit of chicken and egg here. Did Gardy play the younger players, or was he forced to by TR relieving Gardy of Willingham, Correia, Florimon, and not signing a staring CF? Although I think Gardy's preference is the young speedy glove guys, there's no doubt he'd rarher have old speedy glove guys, but old speedy glove guys don't really exist.
  2. These are great summaries on their respective seasons. I look forward to reading more. this summarizes why I think TR probably is going to shop for a quality LF this offseason, possibly a 3 year contract. Because Hicks just went from possible LF of the future, to not quite certain 4th outfielder of the future.
  3. If I owned the Twins I would make the beer almost free just to make the team palatable... And I like cheaper beer than $8 per glass
  4. .289/.387/.805 with 6 home runs isn't good enough at first base. Catcher would be fantastic, but first is just ok. I don't want my 3rd batter with 2 men on and down by two runs with two outs in the9th inning to take a walk and leave the game winner to the guys behind him. I want him to swing like he's trying to win the game.
  5. Vargas might be the first baseman with Sano the DH, it's hard to tell, the point is, more talent is better than less.
  6. I don't think Buxton and Sano "solves" the outfield issue. I don't think this moves precludes TR from signing/trading for a top tier LF and signing a top of the rotation type starting pitcher, but adding Buxton and Sano plus a couple key players certainly helps turn this team around quickly.
  7. Well said. I am most encouraged that 2014 seemed to dispel 2013 as a fluke. Instead of "regressing" he did all of the good things from 2013 similarly or getter and improved in other ways. Definitely a guy to look forward to in 2015.
  8. The other side of this is, if a batter is feeling defensive, such as Plouffe, regardless of the data, is he more likely to swing at a marginal pitch because he thinks the situation is not in his favor. In other words, maybe Plouffe wasn't wrung up looking because he swung at pitches he didn't like, or managed to get hits in instances that were less than ideal pitch situations.
  9. Balvenie Portwood, mmmm And the games matter to the players trying to remain relevant, and the front office evaluating those players, just like spring training, only better competition.
  10. Pinto caught a stomach virus. He apparently went to yack while in the warmup circle
  11. theres a first time for everything
  12. This might be the first time I have ever agreed with you Huhguy. My counter to the argument is one I have been using all September. The season was lost months ago. Now is not the time to play your best players, now is the time to find out what you have in the rookies for next year. While Escobar and Suzuki might be the best SS and C on the roster, you need to find out what you have in Santana, Pinto, and Hicks so you can continue to build for the future.
  13. "I can certainly agree with those critiques, but at the same time, I think the negativity I see directed toward Pelf is over-the-top. His struggles early on in the 2013 season were completely predictable following his insanely rapid return from Tommy John, but in the final three months of the season he was solid: 4.39 ERA, 2-to-1 K/BB, just six homers allowed in 15 starts." I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with you here... Mean ERA in 2013 was 3.75, and 2.65 to 1 k/bb, that's significantly worse than average, which isn't solid I don't blame Pelf for taking the money, or sucking, but I don't like that he's a Twin either
  14. Well said. Does the expletive rhyme with bucket?
  15. I mostly agree with RB but for one minor tweak. 2. Pitching should be 1. I wasn't one ace type front line starter, if he's not that guy that the other teams says "not that guy" about I'm not interested. They already have a bunch of ok pitchers, they don't need another Nolasco type. 3. Defense should be 1b. Hughes went 7 innings with 11 strikeouts on Saturday, still gave up 5 runs(only 3 earned) against a team that went 7 for 31 on the game. 5. Fundamentals should be 2(or 3 depending on his you count 1/1b) and is very much in line with defense. I agree with his take on Mauer 100%. I would go so far as to say the Twins organization and Mauer's career are on different trajectories. When he's healthy he will be a good hitter, but the health part will continue to be a question. Mauer is not and has not ever been in his career a player coach, but that's the direction this team is headed with the requirements of its veterans. On the other hand it appears Kurt Suzuki does kind of fit that mold. He's supposedly the vocal coachy leadery type.
  16. I would add a surgeon to the staff. This team needs someone to remove players' heads from inside their backside, and place it in their shoulders again. Obviously it's tough to run bases or field a baseball with your head up your backside, I think this might help.
  17. 1) interesting on Pinto, but that's as far as it goes... 2) Santana still looks very out of place in CF, he's just fast enough to make catches, maybe with enough reps he could change that, but I doubt that day will ever come 3) I'm unsure of the logjam, let the prospects earn their place
  18. 1) the twins have the third worst record in the MLB 2) the Twins have scored the 6th most runs in MLB What did we just learn from 2 simple rank stats? That the Twins are behind the rest of the MLB in both pitching and fielding. It requires comprehensive quality in pitching, fielding, and hitting to win championships. I think all aspects of the game can be improved to a point, with practice. But all require an amount of talent to excel. Arcia can be lived with (if he practices and improves) given his fielding talent limitations, if and only if, left field and center field are played by quality fielding players. Buxton may be a step up from current in the fielding department, but he is only a prospect. Let us not forget that he was injured by a fielding mistake to end his season. That's not just snake-bitten dumb luck. That was a lack of execution that caused his injury, totally avoidable, and at least part Buxton's fault.
  19. but the "Twins" are the Twin Cities
  20. Linus, Dougie Baseball has been Dougie Baseball since the 90s. It's what makes him a good fit in my mind. His zeal for the game and attention to detail has been well regaled of his playing time during a very low point in Twins history. I know very little of his managerial experience, but I like what I do know, I like very much
  21. This pitching issue does go into the minors. How can a team go so long without developing a single excellent pitcher?
  22. this an indictment of Terry Ryan, who also should be on the block but that is a different thread Granted, talent is the bigger part of the equation, but if coaching isn't important, why are the coaches there, why are they being paid? Who gets held accountable? This team has been fundamentally sound under this regime in the past, but that was 5 years ago. Coaching will not make this rotation gold, but maybe bronze instead of [edit] Having great talent is important! but so is execution. A great team excels at both.
