    Do you mean I'm bad at evaluation because I am evaluating Jenkins based on his performance instead of his pedigree? Tell me: if Jenkins had been a sixth round pick, how would you rate his performance so far with the Twins? Also, upon what basis should we expect he will be better than Dylan Crews or Evan Carter have been the last few years? I still think Jenkins can be good, but he looks overmatched at best right now. His contact numbers, hard hit rates, and measures of other skills are all poor. On his last strikeout, his bat speed was below that of a major leaguer. And remember that his poor stats are inflated by getting a homer off a position player. If your best response is to criticize someone with whom you disagree, you should consider whether your own argument is relatively weak.

    Nance was another waste of a trade. The Twins actually gave valuable players to the Blue Jays to take two players they were hoping to get rid of, and the Blue Jays have had a better record than the Twins since the trades.

    Sorry, but Jenkins is looking like 1 WAR top prospects like Dylan Crews and Evan Carter (non-playoff version) could become optimistic outcomes. He needs a reset sooner than later. It's too bad that the Twins compounded their mistakes this year by bringing Jenkins up to the majors in a Hail Mary effort to make the playoffs, thereby taking the risk that he will have to go without baseball activities for at least a portion of next year.

    If I am Tom, I am doing what I can to get the best baseball ops team I can and that I support them to the best of my ability, and I'm not going to be Roger Headrick wearing coach's shorts and carrying a stopwatch and clipboard on the floor of the combine.

    I don't even know if it's PR anymore. If it is, it's poor PR, because ticket sales continue to drop. A press release might be good PR for a day or two, but your record is your best long-term PR, with your credibility being #2. And I have no idea if it has anything to do with trying to drive up the value to sell the team. I've seen nothing other than social media speculation about a sale. The Angels and Padres just sold for many millions without any kind of notable success, so it does not appear that a playoff appearance would affect valuation very much (as opposed to a healthy turn-key operation, instead of one in which repairs have been deferred). I'm starting to think it's self-image - "I'm a winner!" And perhaps an unwillingness to incur a little pain to achieve a goal.

    First you said Falvey made a mistake to draft Larnach in the first round (you got his draft # wrong), because he was at best a second-round pick, but now you say you "can't fault the Twins for taking him." I'm good with complaints based in reason and fact, but this seems like you're just throwing mud against the wall to see what sticks.

    Lemme ask you a hypothetical. You're at the World Series of Poker and you are down to about a 25% chance of winning and several other people have much greater odds than you. Many of them also are just plain better players at this point in your gambling career. But change the rules: instead of a one-time buy-in, you have to pay more to stay in the game once you're at 25%. Also, if you don't want to pay more to stay in the game, you have the choice to trade in your chips in a way that will give you more chips for the next tournament. Which would you choose?

    This is wrong. For example, FanGraphs had Larnach rated 12th among prospects for the 2018 draft. The Twins drafted him 20th. 14 of the players drafted before him have less bWAR. He was regularly in the Top 100 prospects by many raters.

    Grasping to sneak into the playoffs at 81-81 and doing a poor job of developing the long-term health of your organization seems like an odd way to increase the value of a team, but what do I know, I never inherited a team. Instead, it seems like maintaining some kind of front at the country club.

    So you're telling me there's a chance! Miles Davis would say that if you hit a wrong note, it's the next note that determines if it was good or bad. This whole season has been a double-down on the initial mistake of not going full rebuild, based on a sugar dream of "we just might make it!"

    This is one we agree strongly on. It makes no sense to give ABs to players who aren't doing much to make your present better and have no place in your future. The only exception would be if you think you don't have anyone ready for the chance, but ERod is smacking balls in AAA, with a K rate of 21% and SLG over .550 over the last three weeks, and they really should want to see what he can do in his last option year.

    "Don't tank" == "competitive rebuild" == "sign OK non-all-star veterans to affordable short-term contracts and keep your own OK veterans and play them all a lot" ++ "don't trade your veterans for prospects who can help future years" == 76-86 == "who know what the young players can do" == "run it all back next year and hope for better results" == the only result worse than "tanking" aka "rebuilding."

    This would be better than what they did the last couple of years, because even if they lose more games, it's a plan that leads somewhere, instead of to a repetition of 70-80 win "competitive rebuild" seasons. It would also be easier on Pohlad's budget. Further, if this roster is competitive, it would be much easier to add the salary of real talent at the deadline.

    One of the things that has scared me over the years about the Twins is repeated errors in assessing their own prospects and non-established players. Perhaps the biggest error any team made in the 21st Century was when the Twins cut David Ortiz. Another blunder was trading Wilson Ramos for Matt Capps. Just in the last 10 years, this is a team that made wrong decisions about LaMonte Wade, Tyler Wells, Yennier Cano, Jeff Hoffman, Danny Coulombe, Brent Rooker, Nick Anderson, and Zach Littell, all of whom were basically let go for nothing or a poor return and went on to become valuable major leaguers. (Note: whoever was responsible for identifying raw talent did a good job.) Of course, even good teams make these errors - CLE with Junior Caminero, TBR with Cristopher Sanchez, for example - but the Twins seem to make these errors often, while many of the prospects they decided to keep quickly flamed out. Net-net: if they let ERod go and it turns out to be a wrong decision, it will not be their first.

    About 25-30 years ago, a Vikings coach said, "No more scholarships." Since then, I've always thought that was a good approach. There may be different tiers of how coaches treat players, but most good coaches require players to prove themselves everyday, particularly rookies. P.S. I can "treat" a player however I want. Who are you to make up rules for me?

    By saying it's because he's their best prospect since Buxton, I interpret that you're basing your opinion on his pedigree and not his performance. Fair enough, although I'm a big performance over pedigree person. Somewhat personal note: many years ago, in a successful company, we learned it was best to ignore the opinion of the guy who said "there is no debate!" The only people who are certain about the right decision and how the future will unfold are those who know everything and those who know nothing. You can decide where you stand.

    Four weeks of excellence at AAA should not guarantee a permanent starting job in the majors. It guarantees an opportunity, but Jenkins still needs to show, on an extended basis, that he's better than three other outfielders. Of course, if next year is to be a rebuilding year, then, sure, have him take further lumps. He could crash, which could be a big set-back, but maybe the Twins and fans like you are OK with that risk. My opinion could of course change if he shows more over the next few weeks.

    Are you basing it on his pedigree, because his performance isn't earning anything? All jobs should be earned.

    "His defense has been just as encouraging. Culpepper has been worth 1 OAA at shortstop in his limited opportunity. More importantly, he's looked comfortable at a position where the Twins have struggled to find consistent production defensively this season." We should be more optimistic about Culpepper's ability to stay at SS. He's a great athlete and seems very smart. Once the game slows down for him and he gets more reps, he could easily be a plus defensive shortstop. Maybe he won't become that good, but he should get a full chance to show what he can do.

    I agree Bell has justified his contract.

    Well, in the Twins' defense, they did do an extension with Dobnak before he proved himself. And the Buxton contract was a really smart balancing of risks and payoff for a great, but often injured player, which the team probably wouldn't have gotten but for Buxton's desire to play here, but some people still hate it.
