  1. It is a bit of a compliment to the Twins organization that they have people within the organization worth poaching. Say what you will about the spreadsheets the FO uses or the analytics stressed up and down the organization, but the Twins are clearly doing something other teams find valuable and difficult to replicate on their own. This is extremely encouraging. I would be really disappointed to see the FO move on from the Twins now that they have turned it around and built (what looks to be) sustainable success. However, if Boston comes calling, I wouldn't blame them one bit for taking that opportunity.
  2. Yankees can have this record. It would not, in any way, diminish this Twins season if they do not end the year with the most homers hit. AL Central champions is far more important. Also, congrats to the Yankees on hitting a whole bunch of homers in a game where they allowed 12 runs to the Tigers and lost. They should feel really good about how they played last night.
  3. Puig was an absolute menace during the 4 game series back in August. The fact he has only been worth .1 fWAR since he was acquired is incredible since it felt like he was worth about 1 win just during that 4 games. Jose Ramirez was another guy who had a great series back in August. I wish he was healthy and able to play, but it bodes well for the Twins that they won't have to worry about his bat this series. Also, really like this quote from the article: The pitching match-ups fall pretty decently in the Twins’ favor as they get their ace against the Indians’ worst starter. Big Mike is absolutely our #1. I look forward to him starting game 1 of the ALDS. Edit: I previously called Pineda the Twins ace, meaning their #1. Not trying to start a debate on what does or does not constitute an ace. Just that he is the best starter on the staff.
  4. Completely agree, bringing him back for next year and beyond should be a major priority! Right now, Big Mike has to be the guy who gets the ball in either Game 1 of the ALDS or the WC game. He has been phenomenal as of late.
  5. His bat is going to make it tough to take him out of the lineup even when Buxton returns. If Eddie isn't 100%, Cave should (IMO) continue to see regular playing time in LF. Nice luxury to have!
  6. You could have been way more harsh here. Detroit is not trying to win games, and they have assembled the worst lineup in all of baseball. Matthew Boyd is their only competent starting pitcher (I do like Turnbull though). They are awful, intentionally at this point, and should be called out. Looks like Detroit has shuffled their starting pitching a bit for this weekend as well. Drew VerHagen tonight, Jackson Saturday, then Boyd.
  7. Good breakdown, hope to see Berrios finish the season strong. He really has been pretty darn good this year. Much like Sano, it is frustrating when things don't go well for him because of all the talent he has, but no one is great for an entire 162 game slate (except maybe Mike Trout). As long as he pitches well in September and October, his recent issues will be easily forgotten. Also, for those of you who play FanDuel, Berrios is $8,800 today, which is a bargain, especially against Detroit. Kepler and Cruz are pretty affordable too.
  8. Competing for 9 innings is not unsportsmanlike, it is being a professional. David Ortiz once started to walk to 1st base as a pitcher went into his motion on a 3-0 to show up the pitcher. That is much more disrespectful than taking a cut at a ball in the strike zone. The vindictive fan in me hopes Kepler hits a homer tonight, stands in the box until it lands in the seats, and takes about 3 minutes to round the bases.
  9. Across MLB this year, in 3-0 counts, players are hitting .385/.935/.756 (1.692 OPS), which is the highest OPS of any count by nearly .300. 3-1 counts have resulted in a 1.427 OPS. Every hitter goes to the plate with the intent of hitting the best pitch they see as hard as they can. Sometimes that is the first pitch of the at bat. Sometimes it comes with a 3-0 count, and guys are crushing the ball in this count. Absolutely no issue with a hitter, regardless of game scenario, swinging away 3-0. None at all. It is a professional hitter up at the plate, and it is also a professional pitcher standing on the mound. Make better pitches.
  10. There might have been more of a reaction by both teams had Kepler taken offense to getting hit and made a scene. At that point the dugouts have to clear and guys have to hold each other back and then return to their own dugouts. Pitchers hitting batters purposefully is the absolute worst part of baseball because of some unwritten rule that was broken (or because the pitcher has thin skin), and quite frankly is something the commissioner should hand out more extreme punishments for to get rid of it. It is not tough, it is pathetic.
  11. You nailed it with this comment. With the struggles of the Twins rotation and bullpen, the defense can't be giving the other team additional outs. Poor pitching combined with poor defense is a bad combo.
  12. Telling him to delete his account gets me 3 likes from the 34 followers I have, and, honestly, some nights those likes are exactly what I need.
  13. Shawn Kelley should be embarrassed by hitting Kepler. Nothing about that makes him look tough. I would be willing to bet no one in the Rangers dugout was impressed with that. Even if Cave knew it was 3-0 (which, based on the video, he didn't), he should be swinging away. The guy is playing for a roster spot on a big league team next year, either with the Twins or elsewhere. Show off what you can do, help your numbers in the chances you get.
  14. Sano hitting 2nd tonight. That is interesting
  15. The Twins aren't going to sign Gerrit Cole or Anthony Rendon (assuming they both make it to Free Agency), so if your definition of "major player" in free agency is signing the biggest names out there, then fine. The Twins payroll the past few years has been around $125M per year. With only $50M accounted for at this point, that means there is around $75M remaining for the FO to work with. Sure, some of that will be chewed up in arbitration/contract extensions, there is a pretty substantial amount remaining to spend. The Twins made some pretty smart moves in free agency this year with the multi-year deals for Gonzalez and Cruz, and a relatively harmless mistake in Blake Parkers deal. I suspect they will make some more noteworthy moves this upcoming off-season.
  16. The Twins currently have less than $40M committed to their 2020 roster. Their payroll this year is $123M, with $18.5M in dead money (Addison Reed, Phil Hughes, and others). Cruz's $12M club option will be picked up, but that only brings the payroll up to $50M next season. I have no idea about Perez's $7.5M option. Plenty of guys will receive raises through arbitration. Some other guys will get contract extensions. But the Twins will have more money to spend this off-season than they have had for a long time. They should be major players in free agency this off-season. They probably won't land the biggest fish in the pond, but they should be in the running for some guys just below the top tier.
  17. The front office is not on the field playing the games. They put together a very competitive roster, and the players are the ones who have to deliver. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. I have a hard time finding a connection between Schoop and Cron slumping and the Morrison and Lynn signings prior to last season. As for the bullpen, it has been a weak spot all season and the FO made moves to improve it. All bullpens blow games. This off-season will be the first time in a long time the Twins have the type of financial flexibility they will have. The FO has put themselves in position to make significant moves. I would reserve judgement of their "Excel spreadsheets" until next season.
  18. Polanco was a great story the first half of the season, and getting to start the ASG was a nice reward. I was thinking about this yesterday as he committed another 2 errors: is Polanco the 4th best SS in the AL Central when all regulars are healthy? Lindor is possibly the best SS in baseball, Mondesi (2.2 fWAR in 82 games) and Anderson (2.1 fWAR in 85 games) might all be better. Polanco was deserving of the ASG start this season, but I do not foresee that as more than a 1-time occurrence.
  19. I think you are right about earlier start times. I failed to mention in my initial post that the Twins head west to face both LAD and LAA, and then to Arizona, and then to SD throughout the year, but getting the big chunk of West Coast games out of the way early is nice. Last fall I was in Arizona the weekend of the Vikings-Packers game that ended in a tie (barf). Kick off was at 10 am, which was awesome! Game done by 1, had the rest of the afternoon to play in the pool with my daughter. Living in mountain time or west coast time would be awesome from a sports perspective.
  20. In 2018 the Twins started off on the East Coast (Baltimore and Pittsburgh) In 2017 the Twins first 6 series were all against AL Central teams In 2016 the Twins started off in Baltimore and KC (lost their first 9 games that season) In 2015 the Twins first 5 series were against AL Central teams The Twins were formerly part of the AL West division (1994 was their first year in the Central), so perhaps that is what you are referring to. The most recent occurrence of the Twins starting the season on the West Coast was in 2010 against the Angels.
  21. Starting the season by getting all the late, west coast games out of the way. Also, Twins will be done with Oakland 3 series into the season, which doesn't matter but is interesting. A trip to LA the end of April could result in seeing both the Dodgers and Angels. That would be a fun time!
  22. Not trying to take attention away from the Twins 2019 season, but the 2020 schedule was released today! Time to start planning another road trip!
  23. The financial component of Major League Baseball is fascinating to me. The amount of revenue sharing and the value of regional network deals makes it almost impossible for teams to operate at a loss. Tampa Bay has been a pretty competitive franchise for the past decade; their financial issues stem primarily from a terrible stadium location. The Marlins are a different story. At some point, it will be in MLB's best interest to not allow Jeffrey Loria and David Samson to own and operate a team. They have basically killed baseball interest in Miami, and it will take years (decades?) to rebuild a fan base. Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you took the time to read and comment on my post!
  24. Last week is over. 6 games on the road against Milwaukee and Texas are huge games before the Twins get a couple of weeks against the White Sox and Detroit again. Cleveland has played incredible baseball since June to catch the Twins in the standings, and they are a better team overall. They only have to be 1 game better than the Twins for the rest of the season to take the central, so hopefully the Twins make that really difficult for them to do.
  25. I suspect this is paid attendance, which includes the unsold tickets the scalpers were trying to unload. Once those kids groups left in the 10th inning or so, there couldn't have been 3,000 people in the stadium.
