The MVP Machine was a great read! I think it is pretty obvious Houston is ahead of everyone else in MLB in using data for player development, but the Twins have done a really nice job incorporating it recently. Houston spent about $44M more than the Twins this season, and the fact Houston is a considerably bigger market than Minneapolis is what I see as the biggest reason the Twins can't copy the Astros plan. Circling back to The MVP Machine, the Twins emphasis on player development will become increasingly important, and that is how they will narrow the gap between themselves and teams like Houston. Really enjoyed your article.

I totally agree. My post wasn't meant to refute your point, but to recognize Buxton had a pretty incredible 87 games played this season considering one calculation of WAR says he has provided more value to the Twins this year than Sano. The topic of this thread is really good -- last year, with Sano hurt and Buxton struggling, how much value would either provide was probably the question being asked. Now it is which of our two mega-prospects is going to have the highest ceiling over the next decade. I like this year's question a lot better!

How quickly we forget how well Buxton was playing this season until his injury and the amount of impact he had on this Twins team. Buxton was on pace for a 6 WAR season, and assuming he can maintain his level of play for 150 games in a season (health permitting), I think he will provide more value than Sano in the upcoming years.

I don't think the Twins need a 13th pitcher to have a solid bullpen game. Nick's point about the Brewers only carrying 12 pitchers last year is a good one; the Twins will try to win games this post-season the same way the Brewers did in 2018. Also, in regards to the original article, I think Littell has to be a lock on the post season roster. Stashak should be a lock as well. Graterol would be my final inclusion as well, leaving Gibson off the roster. I would be willing to swap Thorpe for Perez in Nick's original list.

Gibson probably needs to throw a Billy Chapel-like game to merit consideration for the post-season roster at this point. If he does, I sure hope Kevin Costner is available to play Gibson in the sequel, it would be a great movie.- 38 replies

Really enjoyed this video, especially highlighting Thorpe's usage of his curveball. Thorpe feels like a Rich Hill disciple with how he has that big sweeping curveball and then a sneaky fast heater to back it up with. I really like the way Thorpe has pitched this season.

Front Page: Twins May Pick a Postseason Specialty
JW24 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Starting pitchers tend to have a quicker hook in the post season than in the regular season. It would be nice to count on Berrios and Odo to work deep into games, but recently Berrios has been a bit of a question mark and Odo has gotten outs in the 7th inning just twice this year (and only did it twice last year). I am hoping you are correct, and both Berrios and Odo are capable of turning in great outings, but I think a deep pen will be crucial.- 24 replies

I think it is something like this: C- Garver 1B- Marwin 2B- Schoop 3B- Sano SS- Polanco LF- Arraez CF- Kepler RF- Rosario DH- Cruz Bench- Cave, Cron, Castro Pitchers: Berrios Odorizzi Perez Rogers Duffey Romo May Littell Smeltzer Dobnak Graterol Thorpe Room for 1 more. Maybe a 13th pitcher isn't needed. I might have forgotten an obvious name in here as well.- 24 replies

Ok, that's fine. Marwin at first, Arraez in LF. Same players playing defense.- 24 replies

Marwin in left, Eddie in right, Arraez at 3rd, Sano at 1st (if Cron isn't playing). Maybe not ideal, but certainly nothing the Twins aren't prepared for.- 24 replies

Front Page: Twins May Pick a Postseason Specialty
JW24 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There was a thread a month ago or so trying to predict the Twins playoff roster. I was firmly in the 12 pitcher camp at the time, but without Pineda or a reliable Gibson, I don't see how the Twins can go into the playoffs with only 12 arms at this point. Adrianza's injury and Astudillo's recent lack of offensive production makes the position player roster crunch a little easier too. The bench will be thin, but I think this is the right idea now.- 24 replies

The way Cave was hitting prior to getting hurt will ensure he is on the post season roster ahead of Wade. Cave's July and August numbers in 70 ABs were incredible. Sure, it is a small sample size, but it shows he is capable of being a major contributor at times.- 24 replies

I have seen more of Wade than Miller, so my perception might a skewed a bit, but I am really impressed with Wade's at bats. I think, between his defensive versatility and how he approaches his ABs, Wade should be put on the post season roster before Miller. I hope the Twins season does not come down to needing a stolen base in a situation where everyone is expecting a stolen base. That isn't exactly how the Twins roster has been constructed.- 24 replies

I would be curious if the Pineda suspension has resulted in the Twins reluctance to shut Kyle down. I imagine Gibson wants to be out there pitching and helping his team, and even more so after losing Pineda for the rest of the season. I have a ton of respect for him battling through his ailments all season and never once using it as an excuse. He is a true professional. I feel terrible for Kyle. I hope he is able to regain his health this offseason. I am sure he does not take for granted being able to put on a Twins uniform every day, and I hope he can be healthy enough to do it again next year.

Front Page: Mission Accomplished: An Elite Twins Bullpen
JW24 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We've deviated a bit from the original topic, which was about how incredibly well-constructed the Twins current bullpen is, and how well they have performed recently, so I apologize for the digression. This will be my last response in regards to the FA discussion we have had. It is fine not to have the time to research who is available. Honestly, I don't have that much time myself, but Spotrac is a great resource for all things contracts/free agency/multi-year payroll views and can be quickly glanced over during lunch (which is what I am doing). Throwing out statements like "I expect Dyson to be non-tendered" with no additional information (is there a history of players with his injury this has happened to? who would replace him, where would his money be better spent?) is something I find disrespectful to other people on this site who share their opinions looking for actual discussion. -

JW24 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If you aren't going to bother to spend time identifying specific players, then perhaps making assumptions that the players you would like the Twins to target both exist and can be acquired with relative ease is short-sighted. I agree, it would be GREAT (!!!!) to land another high-caliber left-handed reliever. It can't just be wished into existence. I think, as fans, we assume filling the gaps left behind by solid contributors with automatic upgrades is easy. The talk at the trade deadline on this site was extremely optimistic about what the Twins could do, and I imagine free-agency will be similar (not a bad thing, it is a lot of fun to discuss). As it turns out, there might be a little more to the process than yelling, "We need better players than the above-average ones we have!" Sam Dyson was worth 1.2 WAR with the Giants prior to being traded. There isn't a whole lot of upgrading ability from there, assuming his injury can be dealt with and he is back to full strength next season, which I hope is with the Twins. -

JW24 replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Who do you expect to be available that will be better? One of the reasons the Twins came into this season with a thin bullpen is because teams don't often let good relievers hit the market. Your posts recently have poked holes at other people's opinions without adding any substantive thoughts of your own. If you are going to make the claim that you are "guessing some [better relievers] will be available" please provide names. Otherwise you are simply refuting someone's thought with the assumption the Twins can find the rarest resource in baseball; quality, cheap bullpen arms. -
Front Page: The Future Value of Luis Arraez
JW24 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arraez is only 22, so assuming he is able to add some muscle to his frame, he might be a guy who eventually can be a solid 3rd baseman. I don't think he will ever be quick enough or a good enough fielder to stay up the middle, but if he can add a little power to both his bat and his throws across the diamond, I think 3rd might be his best landing spot. He should look to model his game after Eduardo Escobar. I think you nailed it with your assessment of Arraez. It is extremely challenging to maintain an OBP over .400 when you are not a threat to leave the ballpark. -

I think the targeted Dyson specifically because of the additional year of team control he has next year. He will most definitely be back. -
Front Page: Make Every Night "Obscure Twins Jersey" Night
JW24 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Did Jaime Garcia jerseys ever get made? I can't imagine they went through production and were shipped to the team store in time for anyone to buy one while he was still a Twin. -
I have no issues with this lineup at all. It would be tough for an opposing manager to find a reliever with a same-side (righty vs righty, lefty vs lefty) advantage for more than one hitter at a time late in games. Having Arraez lead off makes a ton of sense. After him, I think Rocco has some flexibility to shake things up. I wouldn't mind something like this: Arraez Sano Cruz Kepler Polanco Garver Rosario Gonzalez Cave If Sano is swinging a hot bat in the playoffs, I want him getting as many ABs as possible. I am also counting on Polanco to be a big run producer at 5 assuming Cruz and Kepler get on base at a high rate.

Nice game by Berrios last night! Reminded me of a vintage Brad Radke outing; give up 2 in the first and nothing else. Tyler Duffey was awesome last night as well. Currently in the middle of an 18.2 consecutive scoreless innings stretch (30 strikeouts to 5 walks during that time). Thank goodness the Twins bullpen has gotten healthy and incredibly reliable while the lineup has been struggling to stay on the field. Let's clinch the division soon and go into the playoffs at mostly full strength and one of the best bullpens in baseball!

With Edwin Jackson starting for Detroit, it was really a bullpen game for both teams. I think in a battle of bullpens, the Yanks still hold a pretty sizable advantage. I recognize my original post was pretty salty. The Twins were going to set a new record in the Tigers series at some point. The Yanks (mostly fans on Twitter) celebrating tying the Twins HR total in a game they lost to the worst team in baseball is what mostly set me off. Also, because I kind of want the Twins to have the record at the end of the season.
