  1. What is that green stuff he is walking on? It looks vaguely familiar.
  2. I am going to go out on a limb and say Bolton replacing McMaster is not a good thing...
  3. I guess they are remaining true to their history, They were not exactly generous with even the major league players until they were forced into it. People might complain about how much the big league players ,make now, but if the people writing the checks had their way, the players would probably still need to get second jobs in the off season, be completely at the mercy of their team for the entirety of their career, and be desperate enough to be tempted to throw a world series.
  4. Trump gloat tweeted about it - very Presidential. Not that hypocrisy is new, but Sessions firing him for not being forthcoming, when so much of his confirmation testimony and his testimony at other hearings does not exactly pass the smell test is notable. Different topic - but hopefully Bolton will not find his way into the cabinet with the administration shake-up that seems to be on-going.
  5. Not that there were not other dissenting voices, but I have wondered if he would have helped prevent going into Iraq. Too many people were afraid to speak up to not appear patriotic even though a lot of the reasons/intelligence for going in had already been proven weak or false. I remember at the time they kept shifting why we should go in until one finally stuck. (9-11, WMD, free the Iraqi people from a tyrant etc.) That makes sense, I also read somewhere that Newt had a lot to do with the current environment of GOP. Each era shifted things that were then further exacerbated by the next group.
  6. Hopefully Lamb's win is real and is not overturned by a recount etc. If so, will be expecting Trump to passive-aggressively or aggressively back away from his endorsement and blame the candidate. I have now heard that Tilerson found out about his firing from the tweet and Trump called him hours later. Just further shows that Trump has no character and vindictive. Tilerson was a bad Secretary of State, but Pompeo could be even worse. Not a good time to have a State Department in shambles with no one with diplomatic experience.
  7. I think the majority of the people are probably actually in the middle, but everything is focused on through partisan lens and is presented in such black and white terms that the two sides end up doubling down on their position that no real compromise or discussion takes place. Any concession to the other side's position is seen as a defeat, so instead of trying to work together it is now an all out battle between the left and right, and they ignore what the large amount of people in the middle want. I am to the left of the middle, but I understood the necessity of the other party to help keep things in check and represent people with other views. Now it is not keeping things in check, it is more of a war trying to destroy anything the other side is trying to accomplish. It is not doing what is best for your constituents, it is doing what will get your party a win or perhaps even more what will be a defeat to the other party. It does not help that people/organizations with deep pockets have such a strong influence. On another note, seems like another quiet day in the Trump administration. No chaos there.
  8. Speaking of trade tariffs... at some point using them as a threat is not going to end well. Nothing like a little bit of extortion to make the country look great in the eyes of the world. And does he have to end every tweet in an exclamation point? Dear Diary - today I think I convinced Australia to ask me to the prom! Donald J. Trump ‏ @realDonaldTrump 5m5 minutes ago Spoke to PM @TurnbullMalcolm of Australia. He is committed to having a very fair and reciprocal military and trade relationship. Working very quickly on a security agreement so we don’t have to impose steel or aluminum tariffs on our ally, the great nation of Australia!
  9. They are already starting to back track if it is going to actually happen. Conditions will need to be met. It sounds like the South Koreans passed on the invitation and Trump immediately accepted and shortly made the public announcement without talking to Tillerson etc. Tillerson had just said earlier in the day that they were not ready for negotiations. After Trump's announcement, today Tilerson is trying to distinguish talks vs. negotiations, but I suspect Trump's announcement blindsided him. Trump did manage to shift the conversation away from Russia and Stormy for awhile.
  10. Just shows you do not need a lot of expensive special effects to make a good movie.
  11. You are not the first person I have seen mention that, so if you are a conspiracy nut, you are at least not alone.
  12. Any thoughts on the North Korea meeting?. I am thinking either Trump's large threats and melodrama might have been more effective on someone like Kim Jong Un, or this is an ill-advised meeting that he agreed to without thinking of possible consequences or getting advice for the experts and could back-fire greatly. I don't see a lot of middle ground of how this could turn out.
  13. I don't think the concussion symptoms were suddenly better last season. There were signs of improvement the year before, but then he played injured (hamstring?) and his stats sunk in August and September. 2017 was a bit of a continuation on the first two thirds of 2016. Even in 2015 there were some glimpses of pre-concussion Joe, so if you look at the last three seasons, it has been more of a gradual improvement than an instant recovery. Hopefully that trend will continue or he will play close to the level of last year. I do think the fact that they no longer need to try to get him in as many games as possible and given him more rest has helped.
  14. I just want to hear him say "you will have to pry the bat from my cold dead hands" in his Mauerian accent. I know people complain that he does not show enough emotion, but I thought he looked happy to be playing out there. There were a number of times I saw him on the field or interviewed before or after the game where he seemed to be enjoying himself. I think enough his peers have retired where he knows he is nearing the end, and he appreciates still being able to play. If he has a decent year, I think he will try to work something out post 2018.
  15. I just saw Get Out on Sunday - figured it would be a good one to see in a dark theater. I thought it was good, but am not sure it was "best picture" good. Better than average - good - but not as great as some of its hype.
  16. It does work well unless your dog has eaten some dirt and vomits mud, then you are out of luck (although I was a bit relieved when I realized what I found was mud).
  17. This should probably go without saying - but sadly someone should have said it to me, do not put a feather pillow in the crate.... I also put a blanket over the crate, because it was supposed to help create a den like atmosphere. It did not end well for part of the blanket that she was able to get into the crate. I had a two year old stray with separation anxiety issues who did not care for crating (starting at 7 weeks, your puppy will probably feel like it is a safe place). I ended up moving the crate next to a window (which was against the recommendation), but she preferred it and was much more content to stay there. I crated her for about a year and made the leap of faith and started leaving her loose (she was crated for separation anxiety eating furniture issues not housebreaking issues). By then her separation anxiety had subsided enough where she could be left without chewing anything. Congrats on the pup.
  18. Georgia went through and passed the legislation - they were more concerned about upsetting their NRA Overlords than harming the State's largest employer that they passed law to punish Delta, simply because they no longer offered the NRA discount. Not only could this eventually cause Delta to leave, but is not going to inspire other companies to move there. I am guessing this probably caused them to fall off of Amazon's short list. Not necessarily due to the NRA angle, but I would think any company would be wary now that the state assembly might punish them if they do something they do not like. Georgia also passed a law that allows adoption agencies to turn down same-sex couples. Another move that is most likely not going to have a positive long-term affect (not to mention being a s*&tty thing to do in general). Not that powerful lobbyists have not been a problem having too much say for awhile, it seems like it has gotten much worse the last few years. I am guessing Citizen's United has a lot to do with that. If the GOP even loses power, they need to somehow get some legislation passed to weaken that case.
  19. Hope is now resigning. It probably did not help her cause that she testified that her job required her to tell white lies for the President, but who knows all what is going on behind the scenes. He also mentioned taking guns away (without due process) and background checks at the gun meeting today. Although he has a pretty good record of back-tracking once he he is behind closed doors with voices who don't like when he strays off the path.
  20. He was doing that with some of the DACA issues as well - he would talk to one group (Chuck and Nancy) and tell them one thing, then someone else (Steve Miller, Tom Cotton) would whisper in his ear and he would change his position and fall back into the party line. He would then blame the other party when the deal fell through completely ignoring the fact that he completely went back on what he told and in some cases even promised them. I am not sure this is even trying to please all people, it is him wanting to look good. He also has a cursory knowledge of what is going and does not know the substantive facts backing things up or any real conviction on the issues, that he is easy to sway by whoever is talking to him at the moment. I am guessing when it comes down to the wire, he will end up following the NRA line, or at the least, not put any true support to the non-NRA side, that it won't get the backing it needs from Congress. The deal will then fall through and he will blame everyone else but himself.
  21. It is game thread season, I have seen snark on those threads a couple of times. You just need your comment to be focused on the game and not something random or unrelated to baseball.
  22. I saw this Sunday (wanted to see the Post or Darkest Hour, but my friend had seen them - said they were great), and yes, well acted, and someone spent a lot of time getting the look of the 1950's upper class. Other than that by the end of the seemingly 8 hour movie the whole cast could have been eaten by sharks and I would not have cared. Not that people need to be likable in a movie, but you need to care about them someone even if it is hoping to see them get their just desserts. It might be worth seeing for Lewis's last performance, but I would be tempted to wait until you can rent it and watch it at home. My friend hosts an Oscar party and always tries to see all the movies. She said in a way, she might have enjoyed Get Out the most, but that a number of the movies were good (although she did not care for Phantom Thread).
  23. Thinks like this do not make me feel especially young. Time flies - it does not seem that long ago that Justin and Joe were basically college age. Phil Miller‏ @MillerStrib Gophers shortstop Terrin Vavra, son of former Twins coach Joe Vavra, will play vs. Twins tonight. Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau were just recalling how, when he was 10, Terrin would entertain them by imitating all their swings.
  24. He got a standing ovation at CPAC today and Trump tweeted that he is a great patriot this morning, so sadly, do not see much changing without change at election time. He really is creepy and the NRA just seems to get more extreme (watch the Dana Loesch videos - or any of Wayne's speeches). https://www.mprnews.org/story/2018/02/22/npr-nra-leard-warns-of-socialist-wave
  25. Not to be cynical, but I read somewhere that the NRA does not really make much off of the bump stocks, so it is something they could pretend to compromise on and it would not hurt their bottom line. Also, Trump has been known to say he is going to do things and not follow up -- Melania will shortly explain the discrepancies that make it seem she was an illegal immigrant for awhile, he is going to fight the opioid epedemic and gives it to KellyAnne with no money, at one time he said he would release his taxes when the audit was done (I think he has stopped pretending with that one) etc. I read that the NRA's Wayne LaPierre will be speaking at CPAC (along with Trump and Pence) but they are purposely keeping his name off of the program. I don't expect any true gun control while the GOP are holding tightly to the NRA money. Also, whoever predicted they would start going after the kids - you are right. This guy is particularly awful, but I have seen some dissemination of memes that discredit the Parkland kids who are speaking out against the NRA and for gun control. There really is no bottom right now.
