  1. Also, it's hard to look at these guys as "student" athletes when you see a completely uneducated quote like this: "We got no answers to our questions about why these kids are suspended, when they were just found not guilty by the law," Wolitarsky told reporters after reading the players' statement. This guy attends a major University and he doesn't even know the difference between a lack of charges and "being found not guilty". Wow.
  2. Criminal charges require proof beyond a reasonable doubt. The lack of criminal charges doesn't mean there is "not even a chance they are guilty", to use your words. The university isn't bound by that same burden of proof.
  3. No, I said they either raped her, or she's lying. With more information coming out, there is much less grey area.
  4. Well I don't think I used that term, so I'm not sure why you put that in quotations. My point is that I hadn't seen those quotes from the victim before. I thought there might have been some grey area, like she was drunk and didn't remember consenting or something like that. She says she begged them to stop, and they didn't, and even laughed at her attempts to stop it. That removes most of the grey area. She is either lying, or it was rape. I have no reason to think she is lying.
  5. Anyone who reads that article and concludes it wasn't a rape is flat out calling the victim a liar. Any player who boycotts the bowl game to show support to rapists should have their scholarship yanked. As a father, reading her quotes in that story were heartbreaking. (Not that you need to be a father to be disgusted by gang rape.)
  6. The University (like many around the nation) has different standards for consent than the legal system does. This applies to all students, not just athletes, like you attempt to claim in an earlier post. Implied consent is not enough. There has to be affirmative consent. The affirmative consent also has to be ongoing. This means that the video, even if the beginning were missing, would be able to determine if consent was affirmative and ongoing. Each new act, and each partner would need affirmative consent. The woman consenting initially, and then simply not protesting additional partners is not enough under the University policy. There is nothing new or controversial about a University having different standards than the legal system. At BYU, for example, students are not allowed ANY sexual contact.
  7. If you want to argue Berrios wasn't perfect at AAA, then OK. But he absolutely dominated AAA last year.
  8. I sure hope that "out of options" as a reason for winning a roster spot has left with the old regime.
  9. So you don't think a woman passes the point at which she's too drunk to consent to a line of 10 men until she's so drunk that she can't speak? I'm sorry, 10 men and 1 drunk woman is not "sex".
  10. Is the luxury tax applied to the entire payroll, or only to the amount you went over the cap? If it's the latter, then it doesn't really do much to restrict spending.
  11. And with those additional months could also come a torn UCL, another positive test, or a 5.40 ERA. I'm not saying you play scared and take the first offer that comes along, but I think there is a ton of risk to holding onto him.
  12. If this guy has so much value as a potential #5 starter, then why did nobody else want him? Number 5 starters can be had at any time. I'd rather shoot for something better, even if it's likely to not pan out.
  13. I'd be shocked if the Dodgers would even consider that deal. If they would, you obviously take it.
  14. And if this team keeps everyone thinking they can compete with a couple minor tweaks I'm going to be pretty bummed. Again, the old regime could have done that.
  15. I have to say I was hoping for more of a boom/bust upside pick rather than some soft tosser. The old regime could have made this pick.
  16. Right, the Angels probably said we don't want it, we'll just take cash.
  17. I'm pretty sure they just call up the other GM's until they get to one that says they will take Haley if he's still available and then offer that GM the first pick.
  18. Why would anyone select Landa in the Rule 5 draft, and have to carry him on the mlb roster, when they could have just signed him as a minor league free agent?
  19. The sentiment is that Urias is untouchable for Dozier. You can't really compare the return for Sale to Dozier. For a player of Sale's caliber, perhaps Urias could be had. Not happening for Dozier though.
  20. Actually you see several free agents do this every single season. If he can be had on a 1 year deal then he likely doesn't have a ton of options.
  21. It would have a lot of value. Even if he doesn't outperform his value in an extra year or two into his FA years, he's not likely to underperform them. And there is a ton of value in getting him at 32 and 33 at a fair price without having to commit to his later years- which is what someone is going to have to commit to in free agency.
