  1. Do you have any evidence of this? Quotes, anything whatsoever that would suggest that? The evidence we have, from prior spending, to statements about revenue to payroll philosophy, to direct quotes from the new FO regarding spending suggests the opposite- that it has been, and will continue to operate as a business.
  2. Palka just OPS'd .759 as a 25 year old in AAA. He's not an option for the mlb roster at this time or any time soon. Maybe he tried to play hurt, who knows, but regardless of why he struggled, he's going to have to reestablish himself. I'd guess he gets removed from the 40 man this winter.
  3. If it results in a WS ring, yes I'm more than ok with it. Winning a championship is the ONLY thing that defines success, IMO. There isn't much difference between 2nd place and 30th place to me, they both finished the season losers. I get many disagree, that's fine.
  4. If playoff runs are a likely outcome of perennial playoff teams, then the 00's Twins should have had a few. It takes a different kind of team to win in the postseason.
  5. Yes, an extension that requires them to pay big money during decline years in order to have him his next 2 or 3. You think its just a coincidence that guys with cheap team controlled years always bring back more return than rentals? I didn't think it was even in question that surplus value is a thing.
  6. Years of control now, during his prime, are much more valuable than years of control via an extension - which requires paying for his decline years. In fact, having to pay for his decline years via an extension actually subtracts from his trade value.
  7. Lewis was the number one overall pick... in the entire draft. If he's 4th in our system, it was an awful pick.
  8. Buxton had more bWAR this year alone than Rosario has in his entire career.
  9. Trading Buxton would be a colossal mistake, IMO.
  10. Well limiting it to the last 2 years is a bit unfair, given their ages. No, they wouldn't package him with Strasburg, but we'll have to agree to disagree on straight up Rendon/Sano. Rendon is a really good player, don't get me wrong, but Sano is going to put up monumental offensive numbers when he's the age that Rendon is now. And he's obviously under control for a long time yet.
  11. Admittedly, I don't follow basketball near as close as the other big 3 sports, so maybe you are right about Teague and he's just had a rough start. Because what I've seen so far from him has been awful. Then again, the NBA has a really shallow talent pool, relatively speaking, when a guy like Wiggins- good but completely one dimensional, and nowhere need elite, is a max contract guy.
  12. Well he lied about why he didn't show up, so that changes it from a partying issue to a clubhouse issue. But, we all make mistakes, and he admitted he screwed up, so I certainly wouldn't hold it against him.
  13. Sano actually has a higher career OPS+ than Rendon, despite being 3 years younger. I'm not trying to diminish Rendon, but calling him the better hitter is debatable. EDIT: Autocorrect kept changing Rendon to Tendon!
  14. Ability would be fairly stable, sure. But performance wouldn't be. Why should it? These are humans, not robots. Defense could and should peak and valley just like pitching or hitting. You've never seen a normally good fielder have a bad day? If they are capable of having a bad day, then they are capable of having a bad year.
  15. If Kershaw or Kluber became available, the package would have to start with nothing less than one of Buxton/Sano.
  16. Yes, that is what I think it would take if Archer hit the open market, with a dozen or more teams bidding against each other. There is just so much surplus value in that contract, and good young pitching is so hard to acquire.
  17. Verlander and Archer aren't even remotely comparable. For one, you don't get any surplus salary value with Verlander. Archer gives you a ton. Verlander is unlikely to provide value 2 or 3 years from now as Archer is. Finally, the Astros were likely either lone bidders, or bidding against 1 or 2 other teams, due to the NTC. Archer going on the block would have probably a dozen or more teams making serious offers.
  18. I disagree. Gordon would probably have to be the 3rd most valuable piece to even get them to answer the phone on Archer. Something like Kepler, Lewis, Gordon and Gonsalves would be a start, then probably a high upside add like Enlow, Thorpe or Baddoo.
  19. Agree to disagree that previous seasons should be a consideration at all. This is a yearly award.
  20. If Nick Gordon was even close to enough to get Archer, the deal would already be done, and Tampa's GM would be looking for a new job.
  21. It makes perfect sense that a guy could have an up or down year defensively. No different whatsoever than a hitter or pitcher having an up or down year.
  22. They are independent contractors, so the team wouldn't pay payroll taxes. Health and pension comes from MLB, not the team. Payroll and salary are going to be near identical in the case of mlb players.
  23. He was not perfect for this team, come on. Rubio had plenty of flaws too. And, these are the same issues we had last year, with Rubio, same issues. That said, when they moved Rubio, I assumed it would be for an actual improvement. They must have thought they could get better and panicked when they couldn't, because this Teague dude doesn't look like a good player to me.
