  1. Why not? I could see an argument that it's a poor business decision, but how is it crooked?
  2. Well we don't know that he's hurting for money. Could be just insuring himself against a worst case scenario.
  3. What are they doing that is crooked?
  4. AP reporting that Tyler Duffey sold 10% of his future earnings for 2.23 million. Interesting. I'd never heard of this before but I guess this company has about a dozen other clients over Mlb,nfl and PGA. I'm probably always taking it if I'm the player, considering the only way you end up "losing" on the deal is if you make more money than you'd ever need.
  5. As long as TR doesn't drop someone of the 40 man for him, I'm ok with him as a temporary fill in if guys aren't ready to move up from AA.
  6. I'm not saying they have many better options, in fact that's my point. Any team with no better options than DanSan or Nunez at leadoff isn't as talented as they think. Though personally, I'd leadoff Mauer. It's very anti old school, but he's the perfect leadoff hitter IMO, high OBP and rarely hits a HR.
  7. Either way, we don't need a metric to tell us that starters have more value than relievers. Top starters approach 30 million per year on the open market, 15 gets you a back end vet like Hughes or Nolasco. Entire bullpen probably rarely approach 30 million per year.
  8. Well he's got a career OBP of .314. I don't have a problem with him in the lineup most days. He's a legit mlb player. Just not sure he's a leadoff hitter on a good offense.
  9. I was under the impression it's pronounced like Burritos if the t was silent.
  10. And to be VERY clear. There is nothing knee jerk about having a negative view of Nolasco coming into the season. The doubts have been well earned after the last two years.
  11. Unless the mistakes are caused by a lack of effort then the only way to correct them is to get more experience. The only way to get more experience is to play more baseball. The reason legit prospects get more rope is because there is a potential upside to letting them play through those mistakes. You also need filler guys because no organization has 25 legit prospects at every level. Naturally those guys don't get as long of a leash because there is no payoff later to letting theme play through their mistakes. Milb isn't about wins and losses it's about developing talent for the parent club. There are Indy leagues if those clubs would rather focus on winning games. And, occasionally, but not often, you do see an affiliate decide not to renew with an MLB club for that reason.
  12. Yes. I'll gladly eat crow for now. But I'll be interested to see if he's allowed to stay up when Gibson and Ervin return from the DL.
  13. I predict Berrios exits with a no hitter, due to either weather or magic 100 pitch threshold.
  14. This assumes we don't have another 9 game losing streak in there somewhere.
  15. I think any team with Danny Santana and Eduardo Nunez alternating as their leadoff hitter doesn't have as much offensive talent as they think they do.
  16. Have to get Santana's bat in the lineup.
  17. Yeah I reject the premise of the rant on that basis. I'd say those on here who were terrified that the Twins would give up on Arcia outnumber any who ripped the Twins for keeping him by at least 15 to 1.
  18. I do as well. I wasn't responding to the part about family. I was responding to the statement about them beating up their bodies for our entertainment. That is not at all what they do. They beat up their bodies for massive, life altering paychecks, it makes no difference to them if we are entertained or not. Besides, there are probably several hundred jobs that are harder on a body than baseball.
  19. I was rebutting a statement that all managers avoid using young relievers. My post had nothing to do with specific personel of the Twins.
  20. That's not what they are doing. They beat up their bodies for a paycheck. This isn't a hobby, these are not amateurs.
  21. Max Kepler could have a decent little career as a bench player. Personally, I'd rather give him a shot at being an everyday player first, and go from there if he fails. Meyer has the tools to be a top of the rotation starter. Those guys don't grow on trees. He can be moved to the bullpen at anytime, there isn't really any kind of learning curve going to the pen. Meyer had one bad year, now we don't even want to give him a chance to see if he can hit that ceiling?
  22. I'm guessing the life changing, make that multiple generational life changing, money is a decent incentive as well. You phrase it like they are volunteer firefighters or something.
  23. Then why are there so many young bullpen guys pitching in high leverage roles these days? If I recall Trevor Rosenthal went pretty much straight from the minors to closer. Dellin Betances in New York had all of 7.2 career innings when the Yankees decided to make him an all star set up man. The Royals built a perennial WS threat with a bunch of hard throwing young relievers. There are many more that I'm sure others can add. Im seeing managers around the league embrace young late inning relievers, BECAUSE their job is on the line. Young equals live arm equals missing bats.
  24. In other words, Meyer is brought up to be the mop up guy. Don't we have a half dozen or more marginal pitchers on the 40 man who can fill that role, instead of a guy with ace upside who might finally be figuring it out in his last option year?
  25. Uh the jackemp, I'm getting the feeling that you don't quite realize that Duffey doesn't have to wait the 10 days to be recalled if someone is placed on the DL. They didn't need to hold onto Duffey as insurance.
