  1. Not only that, but Terry hand picked Mollie to manage the team. If they are not on the same page, that is shocking to me, as I guess I just assumed that these are discussions that would take place between the two of them BEFORE the hire.
  2. Consistency. Terry Ryan is going to love him.
  3. Yes, Span is a quiet guy. And a prototypical leadoff hitter and solid defensive center fielder. We've traded Gomez, Span, Revere and Hicks for: 1 year of JJ Hardy, a few terrifying innings of Jim Hoey, 7 bad innings from Alex Meyer, some hilarious excuses from Vanimal, a good but miscast Trevor May, and a catcher who can't catch, or hit. It really is amazing.
  4. Sorry, Mollie went to the Ron Gardenhire Irrationally Paranoid of Losing Both Catchers School of Management.
  5. Yes, in fact, I recall he got criticized a lot right from the start, because he never hit HRs. But, a few things: 1) Fans who don't understand the value of not making outs, and positional value are not exclusive to minnesota. This would have happened anywhere. 2) The markets I named are 2 of only a few that would be able to take on his contract, so the reality is those are the fans who would be judging him. 3) Fans still have the right to criticize even when they are wrong. That comes with the territory of being a professional athlete. It's a perfectly fair trade off for millions of dollars. It's a chosen profession, not forced, anyone not willing to make that trade off is free to take a less public job. And again, if it rises to personal attacks or threats, that is pathetic and wrong.
  6. Personally, I don't separate AAA from AA much. I dont think it's really a jump. AAA is watered down with a bunch of AAAA talent, and minor league lifers with no shot, like Toby Gardenhire.
  7. I agree on your first part, with no cap and no faith the freed up money would be better spent, there is no reason to trade him just to dump salary. Disagree on the second point though. Any criticism he got here was tame to what he'd have gotten in a lot of markets. Could you imagine what he'd have to endure in Philly or New York? When teams charge admission, it's no longer a game, it's a service rendered. When someone pays money for a service and they get a subpar product, they have a right to complain. Sports should be no exception. If it rises to personal threats, well that is just sad and pathetic, but I don't think he got much of that here.
  8. I agree with some of that, but in what way was Dozier rushed? He was 25 years old and had more than 1600 milb plate appearances as a 4 year college guy.
  9. Yes, May's first few starts were bad. His debut might have been the most painfully bad I've ever seen.
  10. That's how we'll know Mollie is just trolling us. If JR pitches in anything other than an emergency or blowout, while 3 legit prospects he was given couldn't be found with a search light.
  11. Plouffe is OPSing. 795 this year. How is that a hole?
  12. Well, good thing it's only May. It's smart to get all these losses out of the way before the games count.
  13. Why July? If you think that the mlb club should always try to win, on principle, why should they stop in July? And if you think it's okay for an mlb team to play for the future, once it's obvious that it's not a playoff team, then why wait until July?
  14. Well, both times in my lifetime that the Twins have pulled themselves out of oblivion, the mid 80's, which led to 2 WS titles, and the early 2000's, which led to several division titles, they did so by taking their lumps with young players probably didn't "deserve" to be in the majors. I guess we have a fundamental disagreement, in that I don't believe it's possible to rebuild in the way you suggest. It's my opinion that a few intermittent .500 seasons are their ceiling until they embrace a full youth movement.
  15. And when is that backlog of starters going to go away? It's not. Hughes, Santana and Nolasco have multiple years. Gibson is under control for years to come. Berrios and Duffey appear to be ahead of him on the depth chart. That is 6 ahead of him, not counting Milone, who still can be team controlled if they wish, or Meyer, who is technically ahead of May on the SP depth chart at the moment, but unlikely to be a long term fixture. By the time a couple of those guys leave, you'll have guys like Gonsalves, Stewart, Thorpe, etc. ready. There are always going to be "too many" starting pitchers.
  16. If a team plays every game with only winning that game in mind, with no thought towards the future, how will they ever develop players for the future? Well, there is one way. They could go out and spend 250 million per year building a team completely through free agency, but that is never going to happen here. You can only learn so much at AAA, and for 99 percent of prospects, no amount of minor league development is going to make them better than the guy they are replacing on day 1. So, how would any of our prospects ever get mlb playing time?
  17. If Molitor really believes that, then he needs to be fired, immediately. This team has ZERO chance to make the playoffs at this point. They'd need to play way over their talent level, with no hiccups, the rest of the way, just to get back to .500. To make the playoffs, after this start, they'd likely have to be the best team in baseball from this point forward. It's time to start playing for next year. Throwing away next year too, in the name of false hope this year, would be the worst thing they can do at this point.
  18. 7 mlb innings. If we are using his milb stats then your argument makes even less sense, as they are pretty damn good, yes even including last year.
  19. I don't know how you can say he has "zero control". He has a better milb walk rate than Trevor May, and has pitched 7 innings in the majors. I'm guessing you said the exact same thing after May's disastrous mlb starting debut when he couldn't get the ball within 2 feet of the strike zone.
  20. Just want to remind those calling Meyer a bust already; seven innings. Seven mlb innings. This is the equivalent of giving up on Buxton after about 30 at bats. Crazy.
  21. Chief, he cruised through 2 innings, then ran into some trouble in the third, in part at least, due to some awful umpiring and defense. This was his first career start! He hasn't been given even close to enough opportunity to "show" anything, good or bad. The guy has 7 mlb innings pitched. Seven innings. Chief, how would you say Meyer and Berrios compared in their respective first career starts? How about May's first career start? I don't know where this idea comes from that you can call a guy a bust after 7 innings.
  22. The discussion on voiding contracts is moot because it would have to be collectively bargained. The players union would never even consider it. It would be a deal breaker, non starter.
  23. My first job was newspaper route as well. I was 12 years old, St Cloud times, delivered with my bike. Took about 90 minutes Monday through Saturday and twice that on Sunday's. My problem was that most of my customers were elderly and while their intentions were good, when it came to tipping I'm not sure that they realized what year it was.
  24. I think Rosario at a minimum needs some more time at AAA at IMO is probably best case scenario a 4th OFer. I just don't think the way he had success last year is sustainable, and we are seeing that this year. You simply cannot just swing at everything and not expect mlb pitchers to adjust.
  25. I don't think so. This team has more raw talent than any of the last 5 bad years, but I think it's going to be a big time growing pain year figuring out how all the pieces fit. I really think this club could lose 105+ games. I know the vast majority will scoff at that, because on paper I agree we shouldn't lose that many. But, does this club, collectively, do anything well? They don't get on base, they strike out a ton, way more than their improved but still limited power can make up for. They don't run the bases well, no team speed. Bullpen is bad, defense is bad. Starting pitching was surprisingly good early, but that's regressed significantly. And, even when they were pitching well, they just don't go deep in games. That exposes their bullpen, and also taxes it, making it even worse. They will also take some lumps with the young guys in the rotation now, which is fine, since it should prepare those guys for next year and beyond. There will also be growing pains when guys like Burdi and Chargois and Kepler and Polanco start getting mlb playing time, which I think will happen sooner than later.
