  1. I don't understand how Light is a lock. For me he wouldn't even be a bubble guy. This isn't a mph competition, it's pitching. Light has the upside of Jim Hoey.
  2. I think the point of that post was that Mollie is coming back next year, which means Joe will be the 3 hitter most of the time, regardless of whether he's good enough or not.
  3. How am I not explaining myself clearly regarding spending? Again, I'm not calling for anyone to spend anything. I'm saying that, unlike the NFL or NHL, there is no rule stopping them from spending more if they want. Of course I would take the Royals last 15 years over the Twins last 15 years. The Royals won a title, that is the whole point of playing. How have I backtracked? In terms of success, I see zero difference between getting swept in the first round versus losing 100 games. Of course one is more enjoyable and entertaining than the other, but success/failure wise, not much difference to me.
  4. I'm working under the assumption that the new guy will be better. I think that's all we can do is embrace him and give him the benefit of the doubt until he proves otherwise. Other organizations hit jackpots, I'm hoping Falvey can hit a few too.
  5. I like prospect rankings as much as anyone, but I think they are way overrated sometimes. These are human beings, being evaluated by other human beings. Dozier was never a top prospect. Where was Kluber ranked when Cleveland traded for him? Where were Liriano and Nathan ranked when we traded for them? I won't get too worked up about the rankings, so long as it's the new guy making the call. It's OK to trust your scouts, and outscout the other team.
  6. That is fair. But I'd prefer that Rob Antony not make any unnecessary moves, no matter how obvious, without running them by the new guy. That leaves 2 options. Break some minor silly rule that nobody will ever know was broken. Or, wait until the Indians season is over. I'm fine with either option. I'm not going to be hypocritical and get outraged if the rule is broken though, as long as there is no conflict of interest. This is akin to not using your blinker when you are the only car on the road.
  7. How would saying "sure, looks good to me. " when presented a list of 5 back of the roster guys be undermining the Indians? I can understand avoiding anything that might have even an inkling of conflict of interest between the two jobs. But I can't see any possible conflict with this move.
  8. The results were not my point. I'm pointing out that there are organizations that feel the same as I do. Incremental success is only success if the last step is a championship. In that case I would agree. If the Twins closed that 2000's window by winning a title I would say that the whole process was a success. But they didn't. They were good enough to open a nice window but ultimately failed to cash it in. I really thought this was the whole point of sports. Especially pro sports. I'm actually kind of surprised that I'm alone here in this opinion.
  9. Why are you showing me regular season winning percentages? I'm talking about being able to win a title. Also, I never said an owner should be expected to lose money to field a winner. I simply said they are allowed to within the rules if they want to. They could overspend for a year or two when a window opens up, and still make a profit over the life of the franchise.
  10. I think he meant as a final piece for a contender. Willingham was a nice value, for that first season, but it was just as a band aid during some awful seasons. Where was a signing like that when, as I think Nick said, we were rolling with Jason Tyner as DH in the playoffs?
  11. 1) I've already clarified that winning every season isn't realistic. I'm saying if you have a window and don't cash in a title then it wasn't a success. That could be 1 title in 5 years or whatever the window is. 2) They weren't let go because the window closed and it was time to start over. Schottenheimer was fired from San Diego after a 14-2 season. And both the Caps and Ducks were/are still playoff contenders immediately after firing Boudreau. 3) Again, who is saying every year? That's not realistic. But don't call it a success when you don't. The goal should be to win a title. I guess I don't understand how that is controversial.
  12. I know it's beside the point, but on that board you don't want a K on the turn. That's how you lose all your money to a full house.
  13. Unless you are in the discussions, I don't see how you can claim definitively that he's not in the discussions. People break the rules every day. I find it hard to believe that they are making roster decisions that don't have to be made until 11/18 without at least a wink and a nod from Falvey.
  14. Like I said, I respect the opposite view. Also, I thought I clarified this before, but I never claimed I didn't get enjoyment from teams that don't win a title. Of course it's more enjoyable to watch a 90 win team than a 60 won team. I'm just not going to call it a success if we didn't win. Also don't buy the small market/ big market excuse. For one, there is no cap in baseball. I get that it's still a business, but there is nothing stopping an owner from going all in for a year or two when the window is there. Also, all I ever hear when it suits the Twins is that you can win without a huge payroll. But then, when the opposite suits the Twins, it's gee not our fault we just can't compete with these huge payrolls.
  15. I'd hate to see a repeat of that. The journey might have been more fun then than now. But, the destination was exactly the same- one of 29 losers. To me there is only one winner each year. And to me, that is what is so great about sports.
  16. There is a difference between win now teams and rebuilding teams. It's not realistic to aim for a title when you are rebuilding. I'm saying the goal is to win a title or two when your window opens up, as the Cubs are now, and the Twins were then. I'm NOT saying you have to win one every year. If the Twins had cashed in a title during that window, it would have been a success. But, they didn't, so to me that window was a failure. I'm hoping the next window, whenever that begins, will be more successful.
  17. If they lose, it would be a failure, yes I do believe that. I'd hope management does too. The moment that an organization's goal regarding success or failure lowers from winning a title, is the moment they are doomed to never win one. Guys like Marty Schottenheimer and Bruce Boudreau would never get fired if management didn't consider anything less than a title failure.
  18. I'm saying they have plenty of choices even with a draft. MLB is a private organization. Nobody has a "right" to play in it. There are many jobs out there that may require you to temporarily relocate to a city that wouldn't be your first choice. At that point you make a decision, you accept it or find a new job. Nobody is restricting your freedom in any way. Sure, you may have to take less money by turning it down and going to a different company, but that was still a choice. If the league wants to eliminate the draft, fine, I have no problem with that. But I don't see a problem with the draft either.
  19. I'd say it would be harder to watch a sport that I thought was only luck. Also, the Twins getting swept out every year they were in it is actually an argument AGAINST it being a crapshoot. If it were only luck, they would have had an even mix of possible outcomes. That's not to say I don't enjoy a good team over an awful one. It's certainly more fun to watch a competitive team. Just that at the end of the year, to me, you either won a title or didn't.
  20. I would hope that Falvey is bright enough to simultaneously watch the Indians in the playoffs while also taking the couple hours, max, that it would take to decide on these few back of the roster guys. I doubt these moves, however obvious, were made without the big guy's approval.
  21. And they won exactly 1 playoff series in that time. I realize I'm in the minority, and I completely respect the opposite opinion, but to me there is zero difference between 2nd place and 30th place. None. The goal, to me, is a title. This isn't the Olympics where you get a medal for 2nd and 3rd. You either win a title or you don't.
  22. Nobody is forcing any player to sign with the team that drafts them. They can sit out a year. Or, Japan, Korea and Mexico are options. As is independent leagues. They have plenty of options if they aren't willing to put in 6 or 7 years of service time before they get full free agency.
  23. Where should Grossman play when you get his bat into the lineup vs LHP? Don't we already have enough DH candidates? Grossman shouldn't play another inning in the OF, barring 2 or more OF injuries in the same game.
  24. This. My daughter is in 7th grade volleyball, and it's downright embarrassing, some of the behavior I've witnessed from parents. I've heard parents, extremely loudly, heckle the ref for several minutes after a call. Sometimes it's not even a bad call. ( Oh, now you make that call in the last game of the match!) 2 weeks ago, at an invitational tournament, our team knocked off one of the heavy favorites, in a thrilling match. All 5 games went to extra points. After the match we left the gym to go get refreshments, and the other teams coach was surrounded by angry parents, at least 5 or 6 of them, demanding an explanation. This is 7th grade, I was in utter disbelief. Why anyone would volunteer to coach or ref youth sports under these circumstances, well most of them have my respect for that.
