  1. And even if Joe doesn't like it, Jake is the older brother. From someone with younger brothers, it's not going to bother Jake one bit to irritate his little bro.
  2. But if you sign FA help and they get injured, then you still have your top internal options available to step in. If you rely on your top internal options instead, you are left scrambling when they get injured. There is a reason that the top FA players get a lot of money. They don't come with a guarantee, of course, but you play the odds, and they have better odds, that's why they are in demand.
  3. Three of those guys have been here all year, contributing to a bottom 5 bullpen. Of course you'd rather have them finish strong instead of weak, but it'll be such a small sample size, that it won't tell you much about how you can expect them to perform next season. Most WS contenders these days have really good bullpens. Traditionally, guys like Pressley, Rogers, Duffey are ok pieces, but ideally I think you'd like all those guys competing for the last spot or two, not all being key pieces.
  4. I honestly can't. Not trying to be snide, I just really fail to see how two professional adults would have a problem being objective. I could see in a field like military, or firefighting, when a supervisor might have to choose someone to send into harms way. But in a profession like baseball, I just don't see it.
  5. Yeah in my opinion Lewis is as likely to play SS for the MLB Twins as I am, so I don't see any problem with a prospect site listing him at CF. By definition, these type of lists are opinion, not fact.
  6. Jake is the older brother, not Joe. If he's so unprofessional that he can't objectively manage his brother than I don't want him in the organization at all.
  7. It seems pretty optimistic to me to think you can turn around a bottom 5 bullpen with only 1 good FA addition. To me, that is how you set yourself to fail and then say stuff like, "... but they were counting on x,y, and z to step up, and who could have known that a,b, and c would get hurt. "
  8. Garver instead of Vargas allows Molitor to more liberally pinch hit for his catcher.
  9. Holding guys to 1 less base (because they are afraid to run) is still going to reflect positively in his defensive metrics, so I'm not buying that as the reason for much decline.
  10. What's the reason that Mauer can't manage while Joe is still on the team? They are both professionals and grown men, I don't understand this argument.
  11. Granite and Garver are both already on the 40 man. One could come up without a DFA. Would just need to go down to 12 pitchers.
  12. Rosario is playing better than Kepler on offense, but defense and base running count too. Kepler has nearly three times the bWAR as Rosario. I get not every one cares about that, but the point remains that defense matters too.
  13. And I would have a big problem if that's the case. That would be right up there with DSP's "25th man" comment a few years ago. The margins in pro sports are razor thin. You constantly try to improve every single 25 man spot. You don't sit back and say, "yeah, we could improve that spot, but its only backup catcher so we won't." The difference in pro sports is made on the margins. The Angels have the biggest difference maker, perhaps, to ever play the game. I guess they are lucky that they don't have to try to improve the rest of the roster spots. Just to clarify, if you don't think Garver is an upgrade, then that's fine. But if he's an upgrade, but not worth the effort, that's what I'd have a problem with.
  14. Ok, thanks for that. I hope this new FO isn't marrying itself to guys without having a reason for it though. I'm going to be pretty disappointed if that's the case.
  15. I have a couple questions for you, Brandon. 1) Can you point to a metric or two that says that Gimenez has been good defensively? I'm not necessarily saying he hasn't been, I've just always viewed him as average or so defensively. 2) If Garver is good enough to platoon with Castro next year, then why not now? Do you expect Garver to improve a bunch over the off-season, it Gimenez to get worse over the off-season?
  16. If what you say is true (lack of HR's with men on is due to pitching around him), then his OBP should be higher with men on- it's not. Otherwise you are saying that pitchers just try harder not to make a mistake with men on, and it works. That doesn't make any sense to me. If it were that easy, they would just try harder all the time. Do you have any data to support your assertion that this happens league wide, and not just to Dozier?
  17. Well this is an old thread. I'm not sure I've seen anyone say 4th outfielder since he starting hitting like Babe Ruth, at least not on this site.
  18. If bombs start flying, anyone who gives NK any support, no matter how minor, is committing a direct act of war against us, IMO. This is not a philosophical difference like Vietnam, or Afghanistan (80's version). This is a murderous, tyrannical, terroristic, oppressive regime, with zero redeeming qualities. There should be a clear line against anyone offering any support to NK if actual war breaks out, IMO.
  19. I'm fine going with Rosario again as a starter next year, if that's the way they go. Simply because he's still so young, has some nice tools, and showed some pedigree in the minors. But, I think you absolutely can try to improve that spot if you want, without it interfering with the more important improvements this team needs. I'd sure as heck hope these new guys can walk AND chew gum at the same time.
  20. Maybe instead of defensive metrics skewering a guy for no apparent reason, maybe, against traditional thought, defense can slump. Because I watched Grossman last year, and he looked every bit as awful as the metrics said he did. And I've watched Rosario this year, and he looks like a poor defender. He does it in a much different way than Grossman does, but still bad nonetheless. Maybe we just have to get used to the idea that guys can have year to year swings on defense, just like they do on offense.
  21. Yeah WAR isn't perfect, but its still far better than the "eye test", IMO. For now it's what we have, so it's all I can go by. I assume the FO has internal metrics, but they don't show those to me, so I can't say how they match up with bWAR.
  22. Well I'd say that's one way to look at. I'd say another way to look at it is that, while Watson alone may be unlikely to be a significant mlb contributor, you do often see guys that weren't top prospects become really good MLB players. And, maybe the FO thinks that the more of those type of guys you acquire, the better your odds of hitting on one or two of them.
  23. Even still, if it's only 25%, I want the FO planning for the 75% to happen. Don't go chasing waterfalls, as TLC once said.
  24. He only has 11 attempts all year. That doesn't sound like a case of a manager sending him Willy nilly at every chance he gets.
