  1. Nor should you! Last sentence of every ZiPS article on Fangraphs: "Finally, Szymborski will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on depth chart to produce projected team WAR."
  2. That's fair - I'm definitely still close to high man in the room on Wisler so I thought maybe we could steal both but you're right - that would seem to be quite a haul.
  3. This is great news. I had resigned myself to a deal around DeLeon, but I'm convinced he will be a bullpen guy. If we can get Albies and Wisler (my personal preference) and a lottery ticket, I do that over ANYTHING including DeLeon. Really rooting for a Braves-Twins deal. Sorry Dodgers, you may have had your bluff called.
  4. Sweet! Just got the PDF and uploaded to Google Drive. Now I can read it at my desk at work, in front of the TV at night, or while I sit on any toilet from which I can connect to wi-fi. Perfect.
  5. Ha! I actually do like the game threads on occasion But I'm chasing a 4 year old around too much in the early innings to do it proper.
  6. Thanks for sharing, I would have missed this somehow. Honest and brutal assessment. For those that don't have 45 minutes, they took a lot of shots at the system and labeled the Twins a bottom 10 system.
  7. Man, has this ever been fun to read. Great idea, Seth. I am 37, married and we have a 4 year old boy and we live in Plymouth. Born and raised in the metro. Although my dad was a Brewers fan, he was okay with the Twins and I have been a Twins fans since I wore diapers. I was 8 years old when they won the WS in '87, and I'll never forget the feeling I had as I watched in my basement, that ball sail from Gaetti's hand to Hrbek's glove. I ran up the stairs and hugged my mom, my brothers (my dad worked for the Pioneer Press in those days and was at work). It was a feeling that those under the age of 30 on these boards have probably never felt, and I want us all to feel that again around here! I have two favorite in-person moments related to the Twins. One was game 163 at the Dome, which really needs no further explanation. The other is more personal. I played a TON of baseball growing up and as a little kid I was actually pretty damn good. As other kids got bigger I didn't stand out as much, I found my talents in distance running, and gave up baseball by 9th grade. I probably could have played high school ball, at least JV, but it didn't play out that way. Slow pitch softball after college was okay but it wasn't baseball. So for my 30th birthday, I got a gift from my wife: she and my twin brother's wife purchased 3 hours of time at the Metrodome so we could invite 16 friends and we could play baseball. We met Tony Oliva while there, chatted with him for a few minutes....and then we played. My first time up at the plate, I took a cut and bam! For a second, I swore it was going to sail over the LF wall. Ha! I came up short by a good 75 feet....but it felt so good. It will always be the best gift I ever received. My interest in baseball has actually increased even more over the past 7-8 years or so....ever since reading the infamous "Moneyball". I gobble up everything analytics-related - I enjoy the game more than I ever have, because of the data that is available. I know it's not that way for everyone, but it's like that for me. I spend more time on Fangraphs, Baseball-Reference and Baseball Prospectus than I care to admit. And because of all this I play in two uber-serious roto baseball leagues that are full keeper, salary cap leagues with minor league rosters (let me know if you want on the waitlist to join the league I run!). I came to this site from Twitter...which is where I still do most of my in-game interaction. I'm more a Twitter guy than a TwinsDaily guy in terms of participation, but I visit TD every day. It is always the most intelligent conversation one can find. I truly value what this site has done for local fans. Finally, my favorite Twin will always be Al Newman. For many inexplicable reasons.
  8. And I think we all agree and Falvey and Levine have basically said as much. They need to be "wowed" I believe they've said. Dozier should be worth a lot at this moment. If he's not, they shouldn't trade him.
  9. Completely agree. No way they deal Rodriguez, who will definitely be the cheapest of the 3 and has a decent chance to be better as soon as 2017.
  10. We never sell high. Never. We ALWAYS wait until a player slides backward before selling low or letting him walk. This needs to change now. It's awesome that Brian Dozier is a guy we want our kids to be like, but that should literally factor 0% into a decision as to whether to trade. This is the hand we've been dealt. Two more controllable, cheap years on Dozier. Career year in 2016. Difficult to see us competing in the next two years. Yes, if any of these factors were somewhat changed, maybe, MAYBE, you lean more toward keeping him. But this is a no-brainer. An absolute no-brainer. Trade the man. Oh, and you can't trade or cut Joe Mauer and use the money elsewhere. Doesn't work that way. And you can't 'restructure' a contract. This is baseball, not football. And he's signed through 2018, not 2019. As was earlier said, appreciate the passion, but disagree wholeheartedly.
  11. This is mostly true. Sometimes a player like Joey Rickard last year gets taken and has an OK season. He was close to replacement level after a good start to the season.
  12. I've always thought Ryan was actually a very good evaluator of talent, even if some of the rest of the vision of a modern day GM wasn't quite there. Good get for the Phillies and I hope it all works well.
  13. Like the 1st post, Sheeran! I don't think the Cardinals are going to look to move on from Wong (they signed him through 2020 last spring) but who knows? I have seen lots of rumors involving Weaver or Wacha for other guys. Not sure either makes a ton of sense for the Twins but perhaps there could be something there. Worth watching.
  14. I am starting to think the Brian Dozier market is surprisingly strong - our return may end up being better than any of us would have thought a couple months ago. I doubt Castrovince, a national guy with a good reputation, would float something that would be completely out of line with what the market is dictating. Consider me cautiously optimistic....
  15. Yeah, these aren't top prospects or anything, so I am ignorant as it relates to who these guys are. But I agree that for this team, Brasoban and Fernandez sound like decent fits for a shot in the dark.
  16. Yeah, thanks for this reminder. I would guess a couple trades could happen before Rule 5, so if you don't have guys you can DFA you're kinda screwed.
  17. I echo the above commenters that I see little value in hanging on to Danny Santana, but they have protected the guys who matter most. Today is a victory, smart moves.
  18. Really happy with this move, and I wish TP the best with his new team, whoever that is.
  19. A couple of lottery tickets, essentially. Seems like an odd return for the Yankees - I would have thought they could do better.
  20. I'm a bit worried about Giolito but that is a very nice high reward play for the Twins that they should absolutely jump on if they had the chance.
  21. Yeah, it's interesting but not important. I probably should have included that in my post.
  22. It is interesting - below is the link if others want to see. http://m.twins.mlb.com/min/roster/40-man/
  23. I always forget he was one of us once. I swear I've been told that like 14 times but I can never retain that knowledge. I mean, SSS for sure, but per UZR and DSR, he grades out pretty average at 2B. I can't say I've watched him defensively to give an eye test report, but the numbers ain't bad.
  24. Curious to see what others think about Steve Pearce as a supplemental addition for 2017. Injured late in the season so his chance to get a 2 or 3 year deal probably went down the toilet. Steve Adams says here he could be available on an incentive-laden 1 year deal, perhaps with option. He offers a high OBP with some pop and positional flexibility, mostly at 2B and corner OF (not great with the glove anywhere but near-average). If a Dozier trade is imminent, this maybe makes even more sense. Hadn't seen Pearce mentioned so I thought I'd throw it out there. I've always liked his game and he seems to be blooming late to some extent.
  25. You know I love your stuff, Brandon, but here are my disagreements: - Danny Santana should not be an almost-bench guy. He should flat out be DFA'd. Maybe you're not incorporating any DFAs into your projection but I will be disappointed if he is kept on the 40-man. - If Carlos Gomez can be had on a one year deal, then I could talk myself into it. I have my doubts that he can't get a 2nd year somewhere. I personally think he's about done, but on a one-year deal it could be worth a shot. - Tendering Plouffe. I personally don't believe he will produce to a point where he will be worth any more than a team's 20-25 prospect in a trade. That being said, I don't want him around taking ABs away from others. We are thin at 3B but for 2017, I want to move on. The rest? I love. Castro I'm basically penciling into my lineup right now. He should be worth more to the Twins than any other team. Nice job!
