Can’t blame Buxton OR the Twins for considering a trade. Both parties could justify the logic of BB being traded this offseason. What I disagree with is the article saying that Houston is a contender. Their pitching isn’t good enough and Altuve is now older and injury prone. They’ve off loaded too many critical pieces and have depleted their minor league system, which is basically ranked last in the league. I don’t want to wish bad things on people, but CC thinking he’s got a shot at WS title with Houston is a stretch. He was traded to Astros bc they were the only team willing to take him off the Twins hands.

3 Recently DFAd Players Minnesota Twins Should Pursue
1985Fan replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Sign the two pitchers. Why not, BP needs arms and it doesn’t look like the Twins system is ready to fill the void. Why aren’t they looking at the system for a 1B? Sabato had an ok 2025, was a first round pick in 2020, and it’s not like Clemons is too good to displace. Or move Larnach, Wallner, or even Jeffers to 1B (if they decide to keep him. He’s a terrible catcher, so nothing to lose by moving him to 1B.). Falvey is either selling fans a fantasy of competing in 2026 (most likely), or he’s completely delusional (not too far fetched based on his past delusions). Go for the rebuild and not the bandaid. There is no way they’re going to win +90 games next year. Take some time to get things right to setup 2027. I’m hoping they win in 2026, but I know I’m a delusional Twins fan (that’s how I have stayed a Twins fan since the eighties!).- 50 replies

BREAKING: Twins to Hire Derek Shelton as Manager for 2026
1985Fan replied to knothole61's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I like his look in the picture. He looks like a traditional old school baseball guy with the gray hair and the beard. If Latroy Hawkins wants to join the coaching staff, that would be great to have a tie to the old Twins fundamentals focus that he was schooled in. At least he’d bring a different perspective. Along with Hawkins, bring in other Twins people. How about Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, or even Viola?- 250 replies

BREAKING: Twins to Hire Derek Shelton as Manager for 2026
1985Fan replied to knothole61's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
We’ll see if Shelton is a Falvey yes man when the rest of the coaching staff is announced. If Shelton is allowed to bring in some coaches that he wants, then there might be hope things could get better. If it’s the same coaching staff as before, then we’re in for a long season. I’d like to see new coaches, except for Pete Maki.- 250 replies

Could the Twins and Willi Castro Reunite This Winter?
1985Fan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
They need to move on from Castro. Plan on playing a young player. They’re not going to compete for the playoffs, so no reason to bring in Castro with questionable value on a good team (no matter how much we fans hope, they’re not going to be a good team). They should be giving playing time to a current minor league player to see what they can do. Prepare the roster for 2027, don’t waste playing time on suspect veterans. -
Indicates what a failure the Twins player development system has been. Also shows how flawed Falvey’s talent evaluation eye is. I suspect that’s due to his total reliance on analytics in everything he does while ignoring the basics/fundamentals and the human side of baseball. I hope that young guys like Rosario get a shot next spring. There should be a wide open competition for the 26 man roster with all of the holes there are. Go with the kids that have proven something in MiLB instead of promoting based on hype. Fedko is another kid that at least deserves a shot. What is there to lose? Even Sabato should be given a chance with the black hole that is first base. I remember Puckett was promoted to the big leagues because there wasn’t anyone else! He learned how to hit for power at the MLB level under the tutelage of the great Tony O as hitting coach. You just never know 😀

Twins President Derek Falvey is In Over His Head
1985Fan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I just listened to the pre-game for the Brewers-Cubs. Craig Counsell, Cubs manger, was praising Pat Murphy (Brewers manager) for shaping the Brewers into playing Murphy’s style of baseball. Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson both echoed the same thing; Murphy has the Brewers playing his style of baseball. This struck me as a contrast to Baldelli supposedly being a Falvey robot and not responsible for the teams play on the field. Backs up my and others contentions here that yes, the manager does make a difference, and Twins need a baseball man to manage this team and push back on Falvey if he tries to micromanage. They need to hire a Pat Murphy to start getting this turned around. I hope Joe Pohlad is watching so he gets the message and either moves on from Falvey, or at least minimizes his impact on the manager hire.- 81 replies

As much as I don’t want to see it happen, trading Lopez, Ryan, and even Buxton could be what is needed to create a quality roster to complement their next core of youngsters that can learn and grow together into a playoff caliber team. The problem is, as everyone here has pointed out, the wrong architect is in charge. Get a baseball man with analytics knowledge instead of a stats geek with little baseball knowledge. Falvey has proven he is not a great judge of baseball talent. This years draft pick will be as important as the offseason trades. Falvey doesn’t have a good track record for first round picks either.

Twins President Derek Falvey is In Over His Head
1985Fan replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He’s definitely over his head in both roles. He sounds like and appears to be a micromanager. To do both of the roles he’s assigned, he would have to delegate some of the responsibilities. To do that you have to trust people you’re delegating responsibility to. Doesn’t seem like he trusts anyone to do the work. Remember, we’ve all observed his most prominent character trait is that he sees himself as the smartest man in the room at all times. He’s his own worst enemy. Thats why he’s failing at both roles.- 81 replies

It looks like they have some guys with good enough stuff to be very good starters. SWR has the confidence and attitude to be very good, as evident during his last starts against very good teams. Abel has dominant stuff, only question is can he consistently control it. Same is true of Bradley. They’re sitting on a possibly dominant starting staff. With young pitchers (or young players) it only takes a game or two for the light bulb to go on and it starts to click. It looked like these three put it together at the end of year. Hopefully that carries over to next year and they will be dominant if they continue to pitch like their last starts. If that happens then I’ll have to give Falvey credit for developing pitching. I don’t expect a turnaround next year even if the starters are excellent. Too many other areas need improvement as well before they can dig out of the hole they’re in.

I’d like to see them prioritize a manager that is hands-on with the young players. That should be priority number one for two reasons; it should be all about young players learning how to play in the big leagues for the next couple of seasons, and the Twins player development system has completely failed. New manager and coaching staff is going to have to teach these kids how to play ball the right way because they sure aren’t learning it in the Twins MiLB system. On that note, don’t promote any of their minor league coaches either as they’re part of the problem. That should be the next part of the organization that is cleaned out.

BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
1985Fan replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He got credit for turning it around from the players, so I think that’s about as good as fact. Jack McKeon did the same with the Marlins in 2003. He also was credited by the players with installing a winning style of play and attitude. -
BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
1985Fan replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It has happened before. Most recent example I can recall is the Phillies a few years ago. They fired Joe Girardi and Rob Thomsen took over. He turned that team around and they went to the WS. -
BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
1985Fan replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It wasn’t about winning a WS. It’s one thing to watch a team lose by getting beat by a better team. I can tolerate that. It’s another thing to watch a team beat themselves with fundamental errors in the field, on the bases, and at the plate. Then add in the managers mistakes and constant dumb decisions and you’re watching the baseball version of the Keystone Cops or Three Stooges. Pohlads finally woke up and saw the fan apathy and understood that fans aren’t buying this BS anymore. He should have been fired last offseason. -
BREAKING: Twins Dismiss Manager Rocco Baldelli
1985Fan replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m not a Pohlad defender and I think they are not good stewards of the franchise. Having said that, can you blame them for the fire sale and rebuild? They followed Falvey’s advice and spent big on Donaldson and Correa. They had the highest payroll in the Central for several seasons and were constantly outplayed by low budget Cleveland and Detroit last year. After last years collapse with a roster full of supposedly playoff caliber talent (according to Falvey) and this years woeful team, I don’t blame them one bit for ordering the sell off and rebuild. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. I think Pohlads went to Falvey and told him to fire Baldelli and hopefully put him on notice as well. I think this is a positive in that they are showing some signs of being aware that fans are not buying this garbage. As far as Baldelli goes, he is NOT a scapegoat. I echo what some others have said here; manager is responsible for how the team plays (example Brewers). The lack of fundamentals in many areas of play, the stupid play calling (infield in in early innings, contact play on always, never bunting or hit and run, etc…), and never seeing any player improve once they arrive, is all on Baldelli. No sympathy for him and his smarter than everyone attitude. He had zero managing experience and it showed. Yes, Falvey should go also. I hope Pohlads put him on notice that he’s out the door if he doesn’t show more wins out of the payroll he is given. It’s not the amount of payroll Derrick, it’s how you spend it! For all the TD posters blaming payroll, look no further than the Mets this year and past few seasons. Spending does not correlate directly to wins. -
What a blow to baseball in Minnesota trading Buxton would be! If they decide to trade Pablo for cost cutting purposes, I wouldn’t be surprised if Buxton then wants out. If the return for Pablo is talent that can immediately contribute at the MLB level, then they could be competitive. I don’t think Buxton would see it that way though and would probably want out. I hope Falvey has enough sense to talk to Buxton before making offseason moves. Let him know the plan is to compete next year with him as the leader in the clubhouse. I don’t have any confidence that Falvey would do that. I do fear the Twins are going to kill any fan interest in the name of payroll and sink this franchise into Rays and Marlins territory. This is the worst I’ve felt about the future of Twins baseball since the contraction debacle.

Derek Falvey’s Pitch for Hope in Twins Territory
1985Fan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I’m with everyone here. Falvey is not the guy to engineer this rebuild project. The first and basic thing that needs to be fixed is the defense. He seems to have no regard for fundamentals, including basic defensive play. Bad defense, bad base running, poor hitting approach, and on and on. And Falvey wants fans to get excited about more of the same?! I can’t believe that the Pohlads will tolerate him and Baldelli after ticket sales crater.- 64 replies

The way Ryan has pitched in his last few outings, I think that raises some doubts about his value. Trade deadline would have been sell high, I don’t think it as high now. Lopez has a longer track record and there are the medical records and exams teams can look at for Lopez. I think his salary will dictate his trade, regardless of the return. Value to Twins is large reduction in payroll.

Trading Ryan doesn’t fit the cost cutting mode they’re in right now. I assume they would trade Lopez and save his salary before trading Ryan. Return for Lopez should be equivalent to Ryan with his relatively cheap $21M salary. The way Falvey is clearing out the roster, he may trade both this offseason. I think that would be a big mistake. It would be great to keep Ryan to lead the rotation next year, assuming the recent poor outings are due to fatigue and/or illness. One thing I hope for is if they trade either one, trade to a NL team so they don’t have to face them in the playoffs (if they ever get there again).

I like SWR recent work. I’ve always liked his confidence and mentality. I think he’s got the ability to be a mid rotation SP. I don’t know about an ace, but you never know. I don’t think too many people had Ryan’s ceiling as high as he’s gotten, so I’ll stay optimistic for SWR. I think they’ve seen enough from Martin, Keaschall, and Lee to write them into the lineup next year. I think Lewis was already in next year’s lineup, but his defensive improvement and recent AB’s have made me think there is hope for him. He needs more consistent AB’s to be an everyday player, but at least he doesn’t look lost at the plate recently. Fitzgerald will make the roster as a backup to Lee at SS, because who else can they get for the minimum salary? Maybe Will Holland? They’re sure not going to sign any FA this offseason. Please don’t keep Julien on the roster. He is a defensive liability at 1B or 2B and hitting .230 doesn’t overcome his terrible defense. Time to move on.

My comment was that the Twins player development system is broken. Having watched several of the last players called up display lack of fundamentals and baseball sense, I stand by my comment. Based on past prospect performances, Jenkins won’t be ready when he’s called up because the Twins system doesn’t prepare their players to succeed. Hope he is great from the jump in spite of the system.

Twins 12, Angels 3: The Royce Lewis Show
1985Fan replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great to see Lewis have a good game. I think the major part to his success or failure is his confidence. If he can build on recent improvements and last nights game, I think the outlook for him next season is going to be good. As Yogi Berra said: “baseball is ninety percent mental and the other half is physical”. 😀- 29 replies

First off, who cares what his ranking is! His prospect status means nothing when (apparently not if) he reaches MLB. All that matters is his skill development. I’m not as much doubtful of Jenkins as I am of the Twins player development process. Based on players that have come through the system the last few years, I’d say they’re doing Jenkins more harm than good. So far, watching Lewis, Martin, Wallner, Julien, and Miranda, gives me zero confidence Jenkins will be ready to play when he’s promoted. Im hopeful Jenkins has enough talent and baseball instincts to overcome the lack of fundamentals from the Twins system.
-
Agree with your comments about Wallner, Pereda, and Outman. Even a fan like me can see that Wallner’s batting stance, leg kick, and long swing is problematic. I can’t believe the coaches haven’t worked with him to minimize the movement and shorten his swing. Even small improvements would benefit him. Right now, hes just flailing away and looking like Miguel Sano (not the good version). Your comment is spot on; he’s overmatched the majority of the time. I enjoy watching Pareda catch. Great to have a real catcher behind the plate that can block balls in the dirt. Bonus that he throws behind base runners to deter the running game, since Twins pitchers won’t hold runners. Outman truly is cooked. Falvey/Baldelli should explain what their plan is to get him back on track. Just give him MLB AB’s and hope he turns into an All Star?! Dodgers tried that and unloaded him on the Twins.

I wonder when the geniuses running this disaster will try different players? This when they’re supposed to give fans hope for the future. Why not give Preilepp a shot in the BP? That wouldn’t prevent him from competing for a spot in the rotation next year. Be good for him to get an idea of what it’s like facing major league hitters. Lee is not an everyday SS. He makes us appreciate Correa’s defense. Isn’t there an option in AAA? Lack of depth at a critical position is telling. This FO sells fans their supposedly excellent prospect ranking and pitching pipeline. I don’t see it. The pitching couldn’t be any worse and there’s no one at AAA worth calling up?! It looks like FO strategy is to tank hoping to get the number one pick next year. Thats all they have. Pathetic….
