Maybe. Brooks Lee is having a comparable hitting season to Mookie Betts this year, He has the same number of HRs as Trea Turner. His .390 slug % is on par with Willy Adames (.392) and Xander Bogaerts(.392). He is 24. The same age as Ezequiel Tovar but with 535 career at bats vs 1499. Volpe is also 24 and has 1616 career at bats. At just over 600 at bats, Tovar had a worse OBP and similar slug% and OPS. Volpe was worse in all 3 when he was at 541 at bats. Dude needs some time before he gets disected.

He has 782 career at bats. I guess I just don't see that as a large enough sample size to move on from a 1st round draft pick.

Bruh. More Brooks Lee criticism. Why? He is 4th on the team in BA. 2nd in ABs. 4th in HRs. 2nd in RBIs. Could he be better? Absolutely. Does that mean he is not currently one of the highest performing Twins on the current roster? Absolutely not. Is his playing time holding a better player back? Absolutely not. I know it's about content, and I applaud the contributors on this site, but it just seems like an odd target at this moment.

This is exactly the type of season to let Royce try to work his way out of his funk. I don't understand why someone would not want the Twins to keep sending him out there.

Week in Review: Reality Sets In
P Meyer replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I mean, he built a team that went to the playoffs 4 out of 7 season before the payroll slash of 2024. An educated guess would be that it wasn't his idea to slash payroll and change the budget environment he was working under. He built a bullpen that MLB teams wanted the pieces of this year. You can't have a fire sale if no one wants what you are selling. I am not a Falvey apologist but directing any of the blame away from the Pohlads is silly IMO. They are mandating or co-signing the Baldelli extensions. They are mandating or co-signings the fire sale of the team. It starts and ends with them.- 47 replies

Strong disagreement here. It starts and ends with the owner. Good owners invest in the team. Bad ones don't. Good owners hire good people. Bad ones don't. Good owners are accountable. Bad ones aren't.- 47 replies

Week in Review: Reality Sets In
P Meyer replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Really happy to see Keaschall, Lee, and Lewis getting consistent at bats, and time at positions. I don't know that they will ever amount to long term MLB players, but consistency is probably the best chance for them to do so.- 47 replies

Without taking into account the Twins ownership situation, there is an argument where the Twins hold onto both Ryan and Lopez with the intention of signing them to extensions if these young/inexpensive players show they can produce at the MLB level. Payroll is pretty much broken down to Lopez, Buxton, ARB players and pre-ARB players. The ARB players that matter are Ryan, Ober, Jeffers, Lewis and Larnach. You could easily move Ober and Larnach for cost savings in 2026 or 2027. Depending on your view of Jeffers long term, you can essentially head into 2028 with Lopez, Ryan, Lewis, and Buxton along with a bunch or ARB or PreARB guys who are still cheap. Unless the goal is to get the budget under 100 mil, you can probably swing the 25-30 per year for both Ryan and Lopez extensions (just a high estimate). Buxton will stay at 15 which is fine. Lewis would be the only other real potential to make a big salary jump in the near future.

IMO, it is a mix of dropping payroll and getting value. Ober is an easy salary dump where you can get a few prospects back because he has value and then slide someone like Festa or Taj into that spot and get close to that production. Lopez, even coming back from an injury, is probably easier to trade than Ryan because Ryan's value is tough to assess. What teams have the requisite number of top prospects to get Ryan? Is there even a prospect only package that is worth trading Ryan for? Lopez on the other hand could likely be had for a prospect package and gets off salary for the Twins. Win/win in that regard. The Twins might be willing to trade Lopez to the Mariners for a package around Harry Ford. This would enable the Twins to get off Lopez's contract, and give them a catcher so they don't have to pay 10 mi for a player like Vasquez. Offloading 27 mil in Lopez and keeping from having to spend 10 mil re-signing Vasquez (or his equivalent) is a nice monetary swing. -

I think it will be very difficult to get equitable prospect only value back for Ryan. Bryce Eldridge? He would be great but is he enough? -

I think trading both is a bit of a stretch. I think trading one along with Ober is the more likely scenario. -

If this were true, multi inning relievers probably a higher priority than specific matchup relievers. A player like Raya might offer better roster value because of his history of being able to throw 2-4 innings. -

Lopez makes the most sense as he is the most expensive but the shoulder injury clouds that up. Ryan likely gets you the largest return but will be the most scrutinized player if traded. Ober makes sense because he has not pitched great. but probably still has some value. Less pressure to get back a decent return but an easy salary to move for a player of his ability. My guess is one of Lopez/Ryan and then Ober as well. -

The Twins moving at least one of Lopez, Ryan, and/or Ober was my biggest take away from the Bradley acquisition. Zeb and Bradley with SWR and Festa battling for the 5th spot in 2025 seems like the intention. Which starter(s?) get moved probably comes down to a combination of return and salary savings. -
The sooner the Twins get a manager in that wants to teach, the sooner that hope comes. Pray for a sale.

I think offseason deals bring the hope of the biggest return because of multiple bidders. I full expect one of Ryan / Lopez to be dealt in the offseason if no sale happens. Lopez is the most likely because of his contract.

Great summary. It highlights some good that the Twins did at the trade deadline. Returns for Bader and Castro look decent. Biggest return coming from Duran (appropriate even if a bit risky). A decent prospect for Varland (unpopular deal). It also highlights some of the negatives by omission. Jax for Bradley is a deal that is ultimately in the eye of the beholder. Coulombe return was a bit shocking for the reliever market IMO. Wild that the return for Brock Stewart is in the minors despite not being a prospect. Correa just a big dump.

Bullpen got wrecked. Defense got worse. We didn't trade any hitting that wasn't mid (this year) and not on an expiring. I am more of a TBD when it comes to the starting pitching but it could be. If we see some combination of Lopez, Ryan, and/or Ober dealt in the offseason, it makes a lot more sense.

The Twins Finally Picked a Lane
P Meyer replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't think they care about winning, but I do think they care about fielding a team. IMO it was just a feeling they needed another CF more than Stewart and the cost was basically a wash. They might have saved a little on the deal. No inside info but this is what it looks like to me since they were willing to make this trade without a future asset in return. This was a tear down. I think it will continue in the offseason if a sale doesn't occur. A rebuild will not happen until the team is sold.- 301 replies

The Twins Finally Picked a Lane
P Meyer replied to Matthew Taylor's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like I said, if you feel the return was equitable (I don't), then I can understand your perspective. Also, in my experience, wealthy people tend to be as frugal if not more than others. Being cheap is being cheap. I feel it is very reasonable to believe the Pohlad's did not want to waste another dime on a player to not be on the roster.- 301 replies
