  1. Not necessarily an apples to apples comparison, but... After the Twins won the WS in 1991, they dumped Al Newman for Donnie Hill and gave Pedro Munoz a full-time spot allowing Dan Gladden to leave in free agency. Donnie Hill was a train wreck and didn't even last half a season. Munoz, statistically, was fine but the Twins sorely missed Gladden in the clubhouse. Ditto for Newman. Easy to look at the back of the baseball card and say this guy needs to go, but baseball is a 6 month marathon and the mental part is sometimes just as important as the on-field production. Understood that the Twins' financial situation may preclude them from keeping Vazquez beyond this year, but I wouldn't necessarily be thrilled to see him go.
  2. I'm going to duck after posting this but Vazquez brings intangibles and leadership. His stats are what they are. But we don't know the kind of value he might bring behind the scenes and how important he is for the pitching staff and some of the younger players on the roster. It is fair to say that those intangibles might not justify his salary especially if the Twins are again facing a payroll crunch - but...I would think twice before dumping him.
  3. Toronto is in such a weird spot. A couple of years ago, they were the trendy pick and were thought to be on the verge of controlling the AL East for years to come. The window closed fast and now they have to figure out if they want to be sellers at the deadline. With that said, the Twins aren't trading for Guerrero and I'd be somewhat surprised if the Jays trade him to an AL team.
  4. I get what people are saying regarding the throw being on the first base side but that was to the extreme. Again, nothing against Vazquez. Just think that of the two (Correa, Vazquez), the former made that play what it was. Anyone else at short and that ball's in the outfield.
  5. No shade towards Vazquez. Just didn't look like a great throw. He's a very good defensive catcher, but that one particular play last night, he needed Correa to be great. No harm in it.
  6. Curious if Staumont is available. They might want to be cautious with him, but he only threw 10 pitches last night.
  7. Correa won the game for the Twins, IMHO. Watching that sequence again, the throw from Vazquez was not going to be in time and a decent chance that it goes into the outfield. I can't think of another shortstop that makes that play.
  8. If the Twins opt for an extended stay in St. Paul, people will be clamoring that Lewis needs to come up ASAP. If the Twins rush him back to the bigs and he suffers a setback, people will be clamoring that he needed more time. They're 5 games over .500. 2.5 game lead for the final WC spot. 6.5 games behind Cleveland in the Central. They've been without Lewis for almost 2 months. The sky's not falling. They're best served making sure he's fully healthy and ready to play. I'd much rather that approach than getting antsy in calling him up and risking not having him when they'll really need him, i.e., August, September, and hopefully October.
  9. Unsung hero, Carlos Correa cutting off AK throw to home. Think it was headed for no man's land.
  10. Good God almighty, I almost had a stroke.
  11. 2-3 and a walk. Hopefully that's all he's good for today.
  12. Ah, ok. I thought Winder was DFA'd.
  13. Josh Winder... Really thought he would emerge as a 4th starter type for the Twins but just too many injuries.
  14. Latroy...love you but the Twins didn't draft Ryan.
  15. Rocco clearly reads the game day threads.
  16. Funderburk has been pretty hittable this year. Thought he'd regress from last year and he has. With Okert and Thielbar on the roster, they can't afford to keep Funderburk if he's going to be so ineffective. Castillo used to be pretty good but not sure how much he has left in the tank. Really need Stewart back.
  17. Same. Twins roster hasn't been updated. I would think it's Henriquez?
  18. Would Sal Perez be considered a future hall of famer? I think so. Didn't realize how good he's been and for so long.
  19. Big time strikeout. The Royals are hitting .303 with RISP?! That's insane. No way they come close to keeping that up.
  20. Don't let them back into this game.
  21. He just doesn't have great stuff. I think he has been fortunate that he's done well with runners on base but that's fool's gold.
  22. When he's on, Larnach's swing is text book.
