  1. I feel sometimes too much emphasis is placed on how successful the Twins were from 2000-2010. The problem I have with this is that this success only worked to the extent that it got us to the playoffs in what was not a particularly daunting division. In the 6 playoff appearances in that span, we've gone a combined 6-19 (and lost the last 12 in a row). Now, dont get me wrong, I'd certainly rather go to the playoffs in any way than not go to them at all, but those numbers indicate a serious lack of success when it comes to playing good teams in high leverage situations, ie: when it counts. The biggest problem I have with this, is that this is setting the bar for success incredibly low. If the FO's gauge of success is simply making it to the playoffs and then getting decimated, then we're doomed to repeat ourselves. And I think the lack of action to push our team over the top by adding additional good players in those successful years is quite damning in regards to their willingness to truly be a GOOD team and not just a "competitive" team.
  2. What has he done these last two years that constitutes being very good? I definitely like the May and Meyer trades, but beyond that, I'm not sure what you think he's done that is so undeniably great. From my side of the picture, I see a GM who has more or less done nothing to improve any of the team's pressing needs, and had the benefit of a miserable team for high draft picks, if Buxton signing was supposed to be something impressive about TR.
  3. I wouldn't be opposed to signing Johan to a 1yr, incentive deal IF he was the third or fourth pitcher we signed. Its completely unreasonable to assume he'll be a top line starter, and very questionable if he'll ever even be a serviceable #5 starter, or able to pitch at all for that matter. If we sign him as a lottery ticket along with signing some (or hell, even 1 would be nice) starters who have been good more recently than 2010, then by all means, i can get down with that. In terms of lottery ticket signings, I also wouldnt mind the Twins taking a flyer on Halladay with a low risk, incentive heavy deal. My expectations for him are very low, but we have plenty of money to take a gamble on some risks like that (once again, I'm advocating this along with other good signings, not in lieu of). Even if he's a shell of the Doc he once was, he's still a proven winner, a long-time bonafide ace, and the kind of guy that some of our younger pitchers could probably benefit a lot from having around. I gotta imagine that it'd be nice for Meyer or May or Gibson or any of the young guys to be able to go talk with Halladay instead of having to try to get advice from a guy like Pelfrey or Correia while they're trying to reach their potential in the majors.
  4. Per Ken Rosenthal twitter:
  5. I'm sorry, but utilizing a cheap bullpen, playing defense and trying to throw strikes and limit walks do not even remotely count as innovative. There are no teams in baseball who do not want to play good defense or avoid walks. There really are no teams spending an inordinate amount of money on their bullpen. Basically you just listed some things that every single team in baseball does, and the Twins don't even do those things very well.
  6. The problem (for me) is that it's not a step in any direction if we retain him. It's staying in the same place we've been in. I'd rather we risk taking a step that has the potential to be in the right direction than just standing in place and twiddling our thumbs and hoping if we twiddle hard enough it'll somehow move us in the right direction.
  7. Not surprised, but that's certainly not stopping me from being pissed off about it. I've said it before, but we're completely stagnant at this point. So much failure, so many problems, and we dont change a damn thing. Coaching staff stays the same. FA approach stays the same. Terrible pitching mentality stays the same. Awful team stays the same. I've watched/listened to probably 120+ games each of the last three seasons, but unless we make some big changes this offseason, I can't really say I see much point to doing the same in 2014 when I could just watch games that my fantasy players are playing in and actually have the opportunity to see some decent baseball occasionally.

  9. I'm hoping he runs into the same problem Bill Smith had after the 2011 season...where he didnt have a GM job anymore.
  10. This statement is unbearably depressing. Third straight 90+ loss season, roster full of AAA players, and he'd "like to think" he'll be able to get us some upgrades? If the Pohlad's are the least bit serious about putting a respectable team on the field, I can't imagine they're happy about a lot of these quotes TR has had recently.

  12. Do you truly think that in a few years if/when we're competitive, the Twins are suddenly going to blast payroll up to to $150M or something with a glut of free agent signings to make up for money not spent from other years? If so, why?
  13. Unless TR goes too I don't see much, if any, chance that we end up with a forward thinking manager from outside the organization. In my opinion, we're much more likely to see them shuffle around a bunch of folks who are already in the org so they can keep on doing the same ol, same ol while claiming we're going to make big changes. Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but at this point my expectations aren't exactly high(to put it nicely) until I see something that proves to me we have any intentions of changing the way the org is being run.

  15. His 5.31 ERA and 1.53 WHIP would beg to differ with the "one bad start" hypothesis.
  16. 5. Think about something other than the Twins. No, seriously, it cant be good for our blood pressure to keep thinking about the Twins. Unless we're talking about a different kind of "twins"
  17. Agreed fully. The consistency and ease of his delivery was probably the first thing to really jump out at me when watching footage of him (well, maybe after seeing that filthy split). As I've said previously, I'm no pro when it comes to analyzing pitcher's mechanics, but his delivery looked damn near perfect to my untrained eye. And as you said, he hides the ball very well, which is definitely making his already good "junk" pitches even better and is a very big plus in my book when you're looking at pitchers who aren't going to blow people away with 100mph fastballs. Obviously there is an overall higher caliber of hitters in MLB than NPB, but I think he still has plenty of ability to make batters look foolish and induce a lot of ground balls over here with the combination of his deception, his incredible split and his plus slider. I'm not gonna sit here and proclaim he's some guaranteed ace, or even a guaranteed 2 or 3, but I feel pretty comfortable saying he has the stuff to be the ace of the Twin's staff by a huge margin, barring any other surprising FA signings, trades, or a miraculous transformation of Kevin Correia into Clayton Kershaw when the clock strikes 2014.
  18. We should be so lucky to have the Mets broadcasters.
  19. I guess this statement depends on if you're saying "potentially good number 3 starters" by Twins' standards or for the Majors in general. Personally, I dont think Albers is a major league starter at all. If we're lucky, Diamond is a mediocre #5, but I think realistically he's yet another AAAA guy. Deduno is a question mark at best, but even his "good" season this year hasn't shown much that would lead me to believe he could be a good number 3 starter in the major league sense. Gibson is the only one there that I think has the potential, but he has a lot to prove at the major league level before I can really feel too good about him either.
  20. I was taught not to question the appearance of scantily-clad women and simply enjoy it while it lasts.
  21. They have until Friday at noon, i do believe it is, to work out a deal or pull him back. Unless they fast tracked a deal, he probably stays in. If he's a late scratch, that could definitely be a sign that something is actually brewing with discussions already though.
  22. I bet if you put that lineup in the AAA playoffs they wouldn't get swept, in the first round. Positivity!
  23. Vic Black was the PTBNL in their trade with the Mets.
  24. I'm not sure if I have words appropriate for this forum to describe that Twins lineup. Its definitely striking fear into peoples' hearts. Only problem is those people are Twins fans and not the opposing team.
