  1. I don't see how this is Joe Mauer's fault in any capacity. Mauer is what he is. He's not some rah-rah guy, and even if he was, all the yelling in the world isn't going to make this lineup any more impressive. If the issue is a change of culture in the clubhouse, I think the natural first step is replacing the people in charge of the clubhouse, but thats a topic for another thread.
  2. Quoting my own post from the Presley thread, since it's more relevant here and I'm interested in your take since you seem to believe Jason Bartlett has something to teach the younger players that our coaches can't offer, and this somehow offsets the fact that he isn't an outfielder and he hasn't done anything to prove he belongs on any major league team in any position (let alone outfield) in quite some time.
  3. They're very prepared... ...for another top draft pick! http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/George-Costanza-Winking.gif
  4. I never really understood "experience in the lineup", when said experienced players are not good. Exactly what skill-set and knowledge is Bartlett bringing to the team that our coaches shouldn't already be able to teach the young players? I can see the arguments merit if we were talking someone like Thome or even a situation like Suzuki to help Pinto with game calling, but Jason Bartlett? C'mon.
  5. If we slot him in CF, we can have a Willingham/Delmon/Kubel outfield. At the very least we'd get a few laughs every game to lighten the mood.
  6. Unfortunately for him (and for us), I don't think Bartlett is going to provide much help in that regard.
  7. Unless I'm forgetting something, which is certainly possible, we outrighted him to Rochester back in December?
  8. I seem to remember the whole, no one to back up Hicks in CF thing not working out so hot last year. Hard to believe they're going to start another season with no real back up for Hicks, since I don't really consider Bartlett a CF backup. If there isn't a waiver wire claim or a trade made by us for someone who can play CF, I'm not really sure what to think. If Hicks struggles we end up with an OF of Willingham/Bartlett/Kubel and Arcia? That can't possibly be right, can it?
  9. Gonna need a source on that one. Does this mean better than a 75% shot to ever make a Major League roster? Better than a 75% shot to be the superstars we all hope they'll be? Better than 75% shot to be above replacement level?
  10. By that logic, we should never sign a player at any position where we have a halfway decent prospect in AA or AAA. That also seems to be assuming every prospect who is good in the minors is going to successfully transition to the majors and not suffer any injuries or experience any other delays or set backs. If they don't like long term deals, and short term deals aren't worth it, what exactly are they supposed to do besides pray they don't turn into the Houston Astros? And quite frankly, we're not too many injuries away from that.
  11. I see this has turned into a Ben Revere thread, but on the topic of accountability, here's another line that I'm beyond sick of hearing: From Phil Miller: "Asst GM Rob Antony: We planned for higher payroll than $85M, but FA position players signed elsewhere. "We were trying to give money away."" Sorry, Rob, but I don't think anyone believes that BS anymore.
  12. Well, my point is moot if the 3-team no trade clause part is correct. Like I said, I needed some more details, but if thats the case I have nothing even remotely bad to say about this.
  13. I dont disagree with that assessment, but how does a no trade clause possibly help us? Whereas not having it certainly could help us if a contender is desperate for a cost controlled, elite closer at the trade deadline or All Star Break or whenever and is willing to overpay. Edit: in response to Dave
  14. Interested to hear the details on this. As much as I like Perkins, I can't say I'd be happy if there is a no trade clause. Otherwise, seems like a good deal to me.
  15. So your guess on their 2014 numbers > 1000+ IP sample size when it comes to gauging who is a better player? If you want to say that it's your opinion that Pelfrey will be better than E. Santana in 2014 with no evidence to support it, thats your call, but saying Pelfrey is better than E. Santana is in no way a true statement.
  16. These projected rosters make me queasy. Someone remind me again why I'm supposed to bother watching any games if Arcia, Pinto, Gibson start in AAA, or do they figure no one is going to watch this trash until Meyer gets called up anyways? I've easily watched 120+ games each of the last 3 seasons, but if we're not going to see any of the young guys for a few months, I'm probably better off flipping on MLB.tv and watching some good baseball games instead of the Twins.
  17. I think the plan is to round up all the 5th starters they can find, and then play musical chairs. The 5 5th starters left standing at the end get rotation spots. Only reasonable explanation I can think of. Edit: wait, i got that all backwards. The 5 sitting at the end get rotation spots? Though, I guess it doesn't really even matter.
  18. Yeah, I don't think that part of the discussion is up for debate.
  19. I think maybe my posting of the stats was misinterpreted. I'm not disputing that Gregorius is the better/higher upside player. I'm just saying, trading a potentially decent offensive catcher for another SS with a crappy bat doesn't seem like much of a net positive when you look at their numbers, and then you consider all of Pinto's ABs would now be going to Herrmann, Fryer, and Suzuki. Part of the question also depends heavily on what you think are realistic expectations for Pinto moving forward. I'm sure if you think last year was a fluke for him, then these trades probably sound great. If you think he can put up similar numbers as last year, probably sounds awful. If you're somewhere in the middle, like me, then probably just depends which way you're leaning.
  20. I guess, if thats how you see it. I guess I'm just not that high on Gregorius as real solution to SS as some of you. It makes us a bit better at SS, sure, but a lot worse at catcher in the meantime. Edit: also, the major league numbers are a pretty small sample. The minor league numbers, I certainly wouldn't say Gregorius is showing he's necessarily a "massive upgrade"
  21. I also don't disagree with this statement. I do disagree with the idea of a 1-1 swap of Pinto for Gregorius, but don't have enough insight on Owings to make much of a judgement call on that one.
  22. The way I see it with Gregorius, we'd basically be trading our only MLB ready catcher with a decent bat for a minor upgrade to Florimon, who has the advantage of being a top 100 prospect at one point. Problem is, his numbers in the minors and last year are more or less the same. Little bit better in some categories, little bit worse in others. No huge differences in their stats (at this point in their careers). Without Pinto though, we're going be watching a whole lot of Fryer/Herrmann at bats for a while. On the other hand, I don't know much at all about Owings, besides looking at some splits, but I thought this was an interesting quote that I grabbed from a Fantasy forum I frequent:
  23. Player A is Pedro Florimon, Player B is Didi Gregorius.
  24. While I don't disagree with the statement itself, neither Gregorius or Owings are even remotely close to what I'd consider elite. Just for comparison sake, one of these is Gregorius the other is Florimon: Player A 2013: 403 AB / 44 Runs / 9 HR / 44 RBI / .221 Avg / .281 OBP / .611 OPS / 2.1 WAR Player B 2013: 357 AB / 47 Runs / 7 HR / 28 RBI / .252 Avg / .332 OBP / .705 OPS / 1.4 WAR Player A minors (7 seasons): 2556 AB / 341 Runs / 32 HR / 275 RBI / .249 Avg / .321 OBP / .675 OPS Player B minors (6 seasons): 1766 AB / 236 Runs / 22 HR / 168 RBI / .273 Avg / .324 OBP / .705 OPS
  25. Franklin is not a serviceable SS and I don't see any reason why they would trade Miller just to sign Drew or another SS. If we were to trade for Franklin, he would have to play second base, which means either Dozier moves positions or is traded and means that we have given up on Rosario at 2nd.
