  1. This seems to be assuming all of these players will perform or be showing that they have the ability to perform at the major league level, which is a huge assumption. Optimism is great, but let's be realistic here.
  2. Correct, this is what I meant. Sorry, my post might not have been the most concise statement. Between work and following all the trade deadline news here, I'm all over the place.
  3. This argument is a bit wonky because that $6M is already spent (unless some other team takes on part of his salary, but that ain't happening). If you keep him and he sucks, that $6M is just as spent as if we pay the contract and trade him for a prospect that may or may not suck. I understand what some people are saying about waiting it out for an August trade in hopes that his value rises, but the money argument isn't helping anyone's case
  4. Something something something, gonna get some darn good pitchers...
  5. For people in Minnesota, all the Twins games are blacked out on MLB.tv for the live broadcasts. Could watch them after the fact, but if you're in a team's market area, you cannot watch their games live on MLB.tv
  6. I can't believe that no call on the infield fly rule. They should make those umps re-take whatever exam they're required to pass, because that was some serious BS.
  7. I'm not sure why this argument keeps coming up, because I'm positive no one in their right mind on this forum has even attempted to argue that a couple call ups this year or last were going to get us anywhere close to the playoffs. That's not the point though, so if you want to defend the FO's bench/roster management, you're gonna need a better case than, "well, we won't make the playoffs"

    Liriano

I think some folks are forgetting he's only thrown 76 innings this season and in my humble opinion, he's MUCH more likely to blow up or get injured than he is to continue pitching like he has been in said 76 innings. I would've figured most of you have seen enough stretches of Liriano success, followed by significantly longer stretches of mind blowing incompetence to be at least somewhat skeptical about him being able to maintain this level of pitching for any significant period of time. If he can maintain good numbers over the next year and not start going mental out there on the mound or blow out his arm throwing all those sliders, good for him. He's an exciting pitcher to watch when he's on, but I'm far beyond getting my feathers ruffled over another team getting less than half a season worth of success from him. Give him 200+ innings for the Pirates and we'll see what tune they're singing about him then.
  9. As much as it pains me to say it, I'm glad we got swept by the Yankees. An unpleasant reminder to everyone that we need to be selling damn near anything we can get a good return on before the deadline. Its depressing, but if we're going to be terrible regardless (and we are), then we might as well hope we at least get a good draft pick out of it all. On another note, I enjoy watching Perkins and we have a great contract on him, but I might just lose my mind if I read another report that Terry Ryan isnt even listening to offers. I'd like to imagine he's playing hard to get, but I'm starting to think that might be giving him too much credit.
  10. Fien 1-2-3 top of the 6th, Fly out, two ground outs. Dozier walk, Clete Thomas double, Escobar just knocked in a RBI with a sac fly.
  11. This right here. I'm certainly going to continue to express my discontent when i disagree with the actions or lack thereof of the FO, but at the end of the day i'm still going to be watching and happy for baseball season. I have a lot of friends who aren't serious fans and they often ask me how I managed to watch or listen to 100-120+ games the last two years. I always tell them that even if it is a terrible loss, there is a high likelihood that some good or entertaining things are gonna happen. Whether it be a sweet hit, a great catch, Nick Punto diving into first base, whatever. And even if it's one of those games where everything goes wrong, it's still baseball and I love baseball. I think sometimes people on here take some of the arguments too personal...or conversely, make some of the arguments too personal. Yeah, most of us are pretty pissed about the current state of the Twins major league roster, but there is still some good to be had and no reason for so many threads to devolve into shoving matches. I'm guilty as well, to be fair, and I assume a lot of it will die down pretty soon here with spring training and us actually having things to talk about.
  12. Edit: I can see neither side is going anywhere on this one, so I'll leave well enough alone for the time being.
  13. No one said that. No one said that. You just said that Marcum is a top 30 pitcher and a #2 if he's healthy. That would constitute an "actually good pitcher" Once again, you're just dodging the questions and arguing about things that none of us are saying. What would have been the downside in signing Marcum?
  14. We should be so lucky to have pitchers who are barely top 30 starters
  15. Well, thats great. But that is a baseless guess you're making. Once again, how would it have hurt the team in any way to sign Marcum as well as Harden and Pelfrey?
  16. So you'd rather the Pohlad's pocket a little bit more money than have the Twins put a better product on the field unless they're going to win the World Series? Maybe I missed it somewhere in here, but I take it you were opposed to us signing Harden and Pelfrey as well? What exactly are you even suggesting? That because our team is bad, we shouldn't spend anything because the end result will still not be us winning a Pennant?
  17. OK. And Correia and De Vries might not be better than a 14 year old little leaguer if they can't pitch or they get injured. Harden's arm might fall off high fiving Butera during Spring training. The point is that there would have been no harm in adding an addition pitcher to our roster on a 1 year deal, who would be the best pitcher on our team if healthy, especially considering our payroll flexibility.
  18. Are you really asking if Marcum is a better pitcher than Correia and Devries and then telling us that no one could possibly know that? Edit: or I misread it and you meant "better" as in "is he healthy", which makes a lot more sense. Still, your arguments are awful.
  19. Now if we can just convince the rest of the league that the Nick Blackburns of the world are the guys you want for all 5 of your starting pitchers...
  20. http://i51.tinypic.com/ambdoo.gif Looks to me like you're still bothering with it.
  21. The details are a bit hazy from all the mind numbing chemicals it required to watch Twins games in 2012, but I recall other teams' hitters doing just dandy with that settling concrete in Target Field,
  22. So, you're saying Dozier is just as good defensively at 2b as Casilla? Where are you drawing this conclusion from? Edit: Also, in terms of Florimon being a >> defensive upgrade over Dozier at SS... Florimon: Minors at SS: 715 games played, 183 errors Majors at SS: 47 games played, 8 errors Dozier: Minors at SS: 289 games played, 48 errors Majors at SS: 82 games played, 15 errors I'm not some defensive metric wiz, so if you have some stats to prove that Florimon is so much better at SS by all accounts, I'd like to see them. However, nothing I've seen from stats or watching him play has exactly inspired great confidence in Florimon to be any sort of upgrade at SS.
  23. Or, we could be realistic. I'm pretty sure most of the folks on this board would like nothing more than a Twins team and FO that inspired optimism and confidence, but unfortunately that isn't the position we find ourselves in today. TR and Gardy have done plenty of good over the course of their tenures with the Twins, but at this point it just feels like we're smashing our faces into the same wall and hoping for different results. Clearly our approach to pitching hasn't been working, yet here we are doing the exact same dumpster diving and making excuses for why pitchers wont come here, even though we aren't making any competitive offers. Clearly our MI has been terrible, yet here we are watching them trot out the exact same type (is "bad" a type?) of players year after year. I can't say I speak for all the pessimists here, but I assume most of us have things we're happy with. The offseason trades for May, Meyer and Worley? I'm happy with all of those, but that is no excuse for our FA moves (and the lack thereof).
  24. If they weren't canned after those 12 straight playoff losses, the following two 95+ loss seasons would have certainly done them in on just about any team, regardless of if it was NY or Boston or whoever.
  25. Oops. Typo aside, the Wild dispel that argument of his very quickly.
