  1. QO will be about $16 mil. Also we are not even halfway thru the season. All of these scenarios assume he duplicates his first half, perhaps even improves his peripherals. Still HUGE assumptions, I bet there are multiple pitchers every year who meet this criteria for only half a season.
  2. Sure would have been easier on his original 3/24 deal.
  3. Not shocked here. Reynolds is quite likely to whiff, so don't mess around trying to set up a double play for his PA unless it's absolutely necessary.
  4. Boyer does have more "wins" than Perkins this year.
  5. Tie game, 9th inning, at home.... save situation no longer possible... heart of the order due up (1st batter LH). Boyer or Perkins? EDIT: Leadoff double, but Boyer survived!
  6. Is it more or less frustrating if I tell you that the bases were actually loaded for that DP?
  7. Mauer could always retire to take up Florida State on that football scholarship offer, Chris Weinke style... EDIT: Let the record show that I posted this seconds before his HR today!
  8. Let the hunger games begin! Vargas batting 8th probably suggests a Sano call-up is indeed imminent, right?
  9. Saturday? For those unaware, cable/satellite subscribers can now stream MLB Network for free at their web site or in the free MLB At Bat app, no extra subscription required: http://m.mlb.com/network/live Local blackout rules still apply, but they are not enforced when FSN doesn't carry the game. (I am streaming today's game in Minneapolis.)
  10. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the abacus is accurate at all, unless Buxton's OPSBI is somehow over 1 million (4th row from the top). If you're going to make an abacus joke, at least use the abacus properly.
  11. For the record, Hughes has been a bullpen weapon before... not saying it would be permanent, but that's a direction you could go, as he has an argument for worst performing current starter anyway.
  12. If there is a top producing pitcher, yeah, you probably don't move him. But if there are 6 roughly equally producing guys, I don't have a problem with moving one of them if he can help the team elsewhere. I still think one of the current 5 will distinguish himself over the next few weeks, if not purely by performance then by inconsistency.
  13. Yeah, I am not so concerned about the bench bat either. But even if you are OK with a short bench, that doesn't mean our bullpen line-up is optimal. If we've got 6 roughly equally performing starters, but one of them could potentially be bullpen weapon, I think you have to make that switch, given our current pen. I doubt they would allow 6 starters to pitch notably deeper, and I am not sure it would be a good idea anyway -- it would be uncharted territory for most of those guys.
  14. I think the reports have been pretty clear that this was simply due to the Luhnow connection -- determining if he "stole" Cardinals ideas/property and embarrassing him. I don't think there has been any evidence yet that suggests the Cardinals have done this to other teams, or even that they did it to the Astros for a competitive advantage.
  15. True, the Twins 6 is more evenly matched, but that doesn't mean going with 6 starters doesn't have a cost for us. 6 starters probably means your roster is short either a reliever or a bench player. And our bullpen could probably use the reinforcement of a quality arm (presumably one of the 6 starters, or maybe the return from trading one of the 6 starters). That almost certainly outweighs any reduced "wear and tear". (General "wear and tear" is also a less critical concern across a group of average-ish starters, as compared to a top-heavy rotation.)
  16. I'd start him out at DH with spot starts at 3B, but if he is comfortable at the plate after a few weeks, I'd have no problem giving him some quick looks at RF or 1B too. That information could reduce the scrambling if Mauer or an outfielder ever hit the DL, or if Arcia/Vargas/Pinto ever look ready to reclaim some DH at-bats.
  17. I generally dislike the idea that someone has to pitch/play themselves out of a spot. I think good teams avoid letting players do that. Even if all 6 are doing OK overall, if there's not one that stands out as least consistent/sustainable, I am sure one of them could help bolster our pen in some fashion.
  18. Actually, if he gets added to the 40-man roster and called up, he can be sent back down for fewer than 20 days and still not use an option. To use an option year, you have to spend at least 20 days on optional assignment. (So if they so desired, they could call him up, send him back down for the last few weeks of the minor league season, and then call him back up for September, and still not burn an option.)
  19. Can we just please not make this thread about Joe Mauer again? Oh wait, never mind. Good article, Parker.
  20. The beard factor hasn't been discussed nearly enough. I first read that Mauer's reason for the beard was April warmth: http://m.mlb.com/cutfour/2015/04/18/119047834/do-not-adjust-your-television-screens-that-is-joe-mauer-and-he-does-have-a-beard Then that he was keeping it for the duration of the Wild's playoff run: http://puckettspond.com/2015/04/29/fear-the-beard-joe-mauer-off-to-a-hot-start/ We're well past a month beyond either of those reasons being applicable, though. What's up with the whiskers?
  21. I agree with the sentiment that Sano will be just fine at DH with a start or two a week at 3B (and more if/when Plouffe gets hurt), but I don't think ground ball drills can equal the value of playing the position in an actual game, and the limited number of chances doesn't correlate with that value either. No matter how little a ball is hit at him, the 3B is positioning, anticipating, and reacting on every play, backing up teammates, dealing with tags and cut offs, etc. Getting more reps at 3B in winter ball would definitely help, though. And it's all moot because getting DH reps isn't going to hurt him.
  22. In regards to Schwarber, if we had lost just one more game in 2013, we could have had the opportunity to draft him instead of Nick Gordon. (Not trying to pick on Gordon, just noting that.)
  23. True, if you only look at June, and every player is prone to slumps sometime. But it's not just June for Joe. For the month of May: Top 10 3B: .312/.381/.570, .951 OPS Mauer: .240/.278/.340, .618 OPS Hunter: .333/.391/.566, .957 OPS April was much better for Joe, but even that was only an .804 OPS. When that's your "peak" month, you might be closer to .700 OPS "true talent" level, which isn't good out of a lineup fixture at 1B. Also, Joe has just looked lost at the plate lately. Taking pitches he shouldn't, etc.
  24. Stephen Moya is an interesting comparable. He was left in AA last year before a September call-up to MLB and then on to the AFL (and he's scuffling in his first taste of AAA this year). Of course, Moya had never shown quite that level of power before in his pro career, unlike Walker.
