  1. Seth, I am pretty sure the 10 day recall rule is position agnostic. That is, we could put a pitcher on the DL and recall a position player. The rules laid out here are pretty thorough: http://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3506 They state that the position player or pitcher distinction matters for injury replacements during a playoff series, but make no mention of that distinction applying to any regular season transactions.
  2. I think you are missing the point. Sure, it's likely that Murphy surprised us with his retirement, but why did we want to add Murphy to this team anyway? A player who was already cut once, found few takers, and looked pretty toasty at AAA? Huh? You're talking about a lot of stuff I've never written on here, and certainly aren't the dominant themes of this thread. Here's an example of how a 2-man bench can hurt you: last night our bench was Rosario and the backup catcher. Rosario has a PH HR this year, and our starting catcher's performance screams for a pinch hitter in late innings, but guess what? Pinch hit Rosario for the catcher, and you have ZERO position players on the bench. Zero. So, as resistant as Molitor may have been to that idea before, it's an absolute impossibility now.
  3. I think the Twinsiest move might be to wait indefinitely for Plouffe to return.
  4. Check the other thread for Berardino's TR quote on Murphy, it is fairly damning. I'm not sure how this can be a one day roster thing, unless they add Beresford or Mastro tomorrow, and even if they do, why not add them today? Duffey isn't helping the pitching staff tonight or for the next few days at least, there is zero need to keep him in Minnesota as part of a 14 man staff right now.
  5. Wow. Shades of Bartlett asking to retire in 2014, and the Twins telling him to sleep on it over the weekend...
  6. Do you have a link? I don't think it is quite true. I think they could demote him, but if they found he was injured at AAA, they would have to retroactively put him on the MLB DL. I don't think every player to get demoted has to pass a physical examination first.
  7. I think, like Quentin, the Twins told Murphy he wasn't getting the call, and then Murphy quit. I doubt he was walking away from a likely promotion this week.
  8. I'm not quibbling, just informing folks about the difference between PA and AB and how they are used to calculate K%. I am sure we all agree Buxton has been striking out a metric ton.
  9. Again, if Meyer started tonight, Milone would be his safety net.
  10. That is AB. Buxton has 49 PA, which is the common denominator for calculating K%.
  11. Yup. If Murphy lets it roll foul, that's 2 strikes on Perez, and he's got an excellent chance of striking out / bunting foul for the third strike.
  12. If Ervin Santana can't make his next start, they can retroactively DL him and they don't have to wait 10 days to recall Duffey. (The 10 day rule is waived for DL injury replacements.) As for Milone, they've got either Meyer or Berrios lined up to take Milone's next turn, they don't need to hang on to an inactive Duffey for that purpose.
  13. Swapping Duffey OUT for David Murphy IN. Although I oppose adding Murphy simply due to name confusion.
  14. Worse than tonight's bench is the implication that there is another move coming to add a position player over the next few days, and given the young players that have been demoted in recent days, it will almost certainly be David Murphy. Although I suppose the two points are related: if they ultimately DL/option/cut a pitcher to add Murphy, why not do it today? What exactly are they waiting for? O'Rourke and Duffey probably aren't pitching for the next few days, and Tonkin probably isn't taking the hill unless we see 16 innings again.
  15. That would have been logical, but it doesn't seem to have happened.
  16. Rogers isn't eligible to be recalled again for ~3 more days, unless someone went on the DL (although it sounds like we could do that for Duffey).
  17. That's fine. But you implied there was a different group of pitchers available if Milone starts over Meyer. That is not the case.
  18. You'd have Milone available in relief.
  19. Not really -- there were rumors, but as far as I understand, the Twins declined to interview him for the managerial position. We did offer him an interview for bench coach, but he declined: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/twins-notes-coaches-yang-pitching-targets-hunter-duensing.html
  20. Tomorrow night is Nolasco, who has pitched into the 7th inning in all 3 starts so far. Tonight is Milone, who has failed to complete 5 innings in 2 of his 3 starts. I wonder, will Meyer be in town and ready for tonight? Haven't seen any official announcement yet.
  21. You mean, like Berrios is promoted within the week? I could get behind that, but otherwise I see no reason to mess with Meyer right now just because we're trying to salvage something from Tommy Milone as a rotation fixture.
  22. Meyer was actually on track to start today on regular rest (an off day for Rochester). A contingency plan should have been in place for an extra innings game on Sunday, that Milone would be available out of the pen with Meyer getting the call to start Monday. It's nice to see Meyer promoted, but I share the reservations of others about messing with his role yet again.
  23. An update: a quick glance at B-Ref shows the following 23 teams since 2000 starting 5-14 or worse in their first 19 games: 2015 MIL 2014 HOU, ARI 2013 HOU, SDP, MIA 2012 MIN, KCR, SDP 2011 none 2010 BAL 2009 WAS 2008 WAS 2007 none 2006 PIT, FLA, KCR 2005 KCR 2004 MON 2003 DET 2002 DET, TEX 2001 DET, TBD 2000 DET Note the regular presence of an AL Central team from 2001-2006. Average finish among this group was 65 wins. Best finish was 2000 Detroit with 79 wins. 2006 Marlins reached 78 wins, and the 2012-2013 Padres both got to 76. The remaining 20 teams all lost 90+ games (72 or fewer wins). EDIT: This was just for fun/trivia/curiosity. Some of these teams started worse than 5-14, 5-14 isn't functionally that different than 6-13, etc.
  24. Weird. It sounds like they had to black out some of the hockey playoffs -- maybe Twins games were collateral damage for you? If it happens again, do let them know, and be very clear about your location (both your city and your IP address) and that you shouldn't be blacked out (I assume you are in Minnesota).
  25. When did Torii have a .111 BA? After his first 9 career AB? After 187 career MLB PA, Hunter was hitting .225 with 37 Ks (19.8%). At the same point, Buxton is hitting .195 with 68 Ks (36.4%) -- and both marks worse recently (this season).
