  1. Wouldn't ERA- address most of those concerns? League and park, definitely.
  2. Zunino will still have one option left after this season. He was added to the 40-man roster when he was called up in 2013, and stayed in MLB (or on the MLB DL) until August 2015. So 2015 was his first option year, and 2016 his second. He also may not be arbitration eligible this winter, depending on if and when he is recalled yet in 2016. He currently sits at 2 years and 90 days service time. The "super 2" threshold is usually around 2 years, 120-140 days. Still, with his record, his first year arb salary won't be that high (what do you think Arcia will get this winter?). And as a "super 2" player, he will still offer 4 more years of team control, same as if he wasn't arb eligible. I can't dispute your last point about him never hitting in the majors, though.
  3. This is aggressive -- White Sox promote Carson Fulmer to pitch out of their bullpen: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/white-sox-promote-carson-fulmer.html?fv-home=true&post-id=67110
  4. Does Randy Rosario survive the winter on the 40-man roster?
  5. Not even close to all-in. Kielty was a few weeks shy of his 27th birthday, with 750 MLB PA at the time of the trade. It would be like if we traded Grossman now.
  6. Hicks has a 153 wRC+ in AAA this year, compared to Murphy's 57. Would have been nice to be able to give him a MLB audition if Murphy wasn't ready. Wonder if he will get a call from the Tigers soon.
  7. Thanks. I thought that too, although the example in that link (Santiago Casilla) was also widely reported as a club option. Much like Ervin's. Just seemed odd that Suzuki's was never reported that way, although I suppose no one expected the team would want to exercise it if given the choice.
  8. I think you said they were top 5 picks by AL Central teams, I was just correcting that.
  9. TR didn't extend Cuddyer, Smith did. The other extensions weren't bad, but they were pretty conservative. Only bought out one FA year for each of Mauer and Santana. The Mauer one in particular seemed way too late and conservative. TR also extended Joe Mays, so they weren't all winners.
  10. The Mariners also don't exactly have a non-Zuzino solution at catcher either. And their current SS Marte is 22 years old and has a better OPS+ than Eduardo Escobar (and had a better one than Escobar in 2015 too).
  11. If Suzuki's option next year can be exercised by the team, shouldn't it be called a "team option" somewhere? I have not seen that. For example, Ervin Santana has a "team option" on his current deal, which can also vest based on IP. By comparison, Suzuki's has only been reported as a "vesting option" with no mention of team/player. Maybe it is just semantics, and any vesting option is also assumed to be a team option? It is strange because it is usually explicitly defined, like Santana's.
  12. The Hughes extension seems like very poor long term planning. There is absolutely no way that TR "had" to make that move, it was discretionary, and it blew up. TR also has yet to show any great aptitude for long-term extensions. Will be interesting to see how he does with a new crop of quality youngsters in that regard.
  13. As inexpensive as Suzuki may be this year, he actually has a higher salary than either Lucroy or Norris, both this year and if his option is exercised next year.
  14. Sale was picked 13th overall. Bauer was actually drafted by Arizona and traded to Cleveland.
  15. Perhaps cross off Boston as a potential Ervin destination -- they just got Pomeranz: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/padres-trade-drew-pomeranz-red-sox.html?fv-home=true&post-id=67095
  16. There are two sides to every trade too, maybe it is the seller that prefer to wait and put the buyers up against a deadline for a better return?
  17. Martin had a terrible start this year, but he has an .881 OPS since May 25th. He could easily finish as a league average bat, which wouldn't be bad for an off year from a catcher.
  18. And it sounds like the Rays will get Jepsen back anyway: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/07/rays-in-talks-with-kevin-jepsen.html
  19. Well, it is just 2015 data, and Palka spent last season in the California League, which is regarded as hitter friendly.
  20. Need to combine some franchises there, and prorate for expansion teams. Do the numbers change at all if you limit it to a certain number of rounds? Could they have been drafting a lot of org filler pitchers at the end of the draft, padding their overall numbers? Although it wouldn't surprise me if the Twins misinterpreted their data too...
  21. That sounds reasonable, but since Sanchez isn't up yet, I don't believe they are in that big of a hurry. I think they are still trying to win this year, with their current roster, and still have Sanchez play every day. Teixeira and Beltran are both FAs after this season, which should open up a lot of 1B/DH at bats so Sanchez and McCann can time-share at catcher next season and stay in the lineup most days. (I'm sure they'd like A-Rod to retire too...)
  22. I mean good, as an MLB catcher, right now, enough to dump McCann. Sanchez has 6 MLB at bats, and while his ranking is solid, his track record isn't overwhelming. (How's his defense?) I probably should have just said "not close", I suppose. I can't see the Yankees clearing the deck for him in the next few weeks, or probably not even this offseason.
  23. Well, it seems like the Twins admit there was an issue. From the article:
  24. So, Suzuki's option is a "vesting option". I assume that means if it doesn't vest, it's null and void, right? It's not then a team option on his services? Not that I'd necessarily want to renew him for another year at $6 mil, just curious.
  25. I can't imagine the Yankees would salary dump McCann at this point, though -- Sanchez is interesting, but he just isn't that good/close. You would have to pay in prospects, in addition to that salary commitment. We could possibly get Montero as a salary dump if the Cubs want his roster spot back...
