  1. Fair enough. Still, it is a relatively short period of control, compared to Eaton and Sale anyway, and I think we have to expect a lower return.
  2. I think that report was somewhat overblown. I later read a few sources that said it would not impact their moves. (Indeed it does not seem to be mattering, between Hill, Jansen, and Turner. And it's not like there is a more expensive second baseman available -- the primary appeal of Dozier is his talent, and availability of course.)
  3. I think they envision a perpetual window, so I don't know that the next two years are that much more important than, say, the next 5, in which case these prospects could help a lot more than Dozier (either by playing themselves, or being leveraged for a longer controlled asset than Dozier).
  4. I am starting to wonder if Dozier is even good for the Dodgers budget, longer term when they will subject to the luxury tax. Yeah, he's inexpensive now, but he's either gone or expensive (or bad) in 2 years. Prospects seem to be the one way they can keep that payroll at least somewhat under control, which suggests why they might be reluctant to part with too many prospects for this particular player.
  5. See? Even ABC News is saying it!
  6. Sounds like Facebook took the same ad network steps as Google did recently: http://fortune.com/2016/11/15/facebook-google-policy-ads-fake-news/
  7. Doomtints is on a good track, removing some revenue incentives for fake news sites. But I suspect it will be up to Google and Facebook to more efficiently detect fake news, so they can avoid helping to promote it. Grassroots, crowd-sourced information sounds good in theory, but masses of gullible folks liking and sharing a "news story" can't be the chief determinator of whether Google or Facebook promotes that "news story" to a wider audience. I know that sounds like "censorship" or having Google and Facebook act as "gatekeepers" -- but for example, "Pizzagate" shouldn't "trend" or be a top result anywhere unless it's specifically an article clearing stating that Pizzagate is BS.
  8. Paid content on Facebook is indeed labeled as an ad or sponsored content. The problem is that fake news can still generated likes, shares, and get into the coveted "trending" topics area. Which gets clicks out to the fake news site, where the fake news proprietor can generate ad revenue however he/she likes. It is a step forward to prevent them from using Google or Facebook ad networks, but I suspect there are still a lot of ad networks for these fake news sites to use. At that point, they are not using Google or Facebook for direct revenue, rather for simple "grassroots" promotion.
  9. Yes, but that hasn't changed. What changed was how easy it is to play the game, making those people far easier to reach. I'm all for education, critical thinking skills, and what-not, but that's more of a utopian dream right now than a practical countermeasure to the problem today.
  10. Sure, it's always existed -- but to anywhere near this extent? I mean, it costs virtually nothing to set up a site like abcnews.com.co and completely copy the actual ABC News web site. At that point you can insert or modify whatever you want and start promoting it. Sure, in previous eras you could print a fake newspaper, but that was infinitely harder, a much higher barrier of entry to the fake news game.
  11. So does this thread mean that moderator is no longer a thankless job?
  12. Dave's source, finally revealed!
  13. The Brewers actually lost their NLDS in 4 games with Sabathia (and Michael Brantley turned out to be a pretty good return for a few months of Sabathia). Perhaps you meant Greinke? He took the Brewers to the NLCS, and they lasted through 6 games.
  14. Not to take away too much from Eaton, but it sounds like the Nats were motivated to move Giolito for something good while they still could: https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/why-the-adam-eaton-trade-wasnt-a-panic-move-for-the-washington-nationals/2016/12/08/e7acd08e-bd61-11e6-91ee-1adddfe36cbe_story.html
  15. The vast majority of the time, when it is a PTBNL or cash considerations, it winds up as just cash. I wouldn't be surprised if the PTBNL list is pretty limited, like the Padres will give us first crack at the next guy they decide to waive or release or something. Maybe we will get first crack at one of their Rule 5 guys if they decide not to keep them.
  16. Maybe Dave's source was correct, before Falvey and Levine discovered this thread and were moved by the OP's passionate plea?
  17. Great idea! Let's self publish this thread in book form, just in time for the holidays! A great gift for those hard-to-shop-for people you hate.
  18. Don't forget modest! I'll give you credit for wording it well. No obvious signs of fakery (other than the content, of course).
  19. Probably just edited the text, pretty easy in Chrome developer mode. That's why it matches the site so well.
  20. Sweet! I assume my old membership card is somehow good for this deal then? Can I check out one of these Dodgers prospects for a day, as long as rewind them before returning?
  21. I think Dave's scoops have us spoiled around here.
  22. Although if Jansen (just one "S" ) signs elsewhere, that presumably frees the Dodgers to finally commit to Justin Turner, which would preclude the need for Frazier. Not sure what they'd do about closer then, but they could use one of their young arms in that role if needed -- otherwise is De Leon ticketed for AAA again? Maybe they could even push a veteran there, it seems like they might have more than 5 starters right now. On the other hand, maybe with Turner locked up at third, they'd feel less need to get a big bat at 2B and could look at guys like Solarte to plug in at second. Who knows?
