  1. Of course, he could come up now, and then go back to the minors to start 2016 and we get that extra year of control too. And projecting pitchers is tougher than hitters. Should the 2005 Twins not have called up Liriano for September? He got hurt and optioned a few years later and still got the extra year of control (not that it did us much good).
  2. Think we are talking about different things. I was responding to a post that suggested our delayed bullpen trades meant some young guys got experience in the meantime. I don't think that happened, thus there was no benefit to delaying these bullpen acquisitions.
  3. It has been two good starts. Which is probably a smaller sample than the scouting reports you claim are invalidated.
  4. Agreed, better late than never. Although it does feel like they are still misjudging the pen, if this is primarily a reaction to Perkins.
  5. Pretty sure you used Duffey as an example of the problems with scouting reports? Or was it just coincidence you brought it up in this thread? Not to mention your dubious claim that "everyone just takes these reports at face value." Just because people cite them doesn't mean they aren't aware of their limitations.
  6. Which young guys got experience recently? Achter and O'Rourke are both about 27 years old, and could have gotten that experience earlier in the year. Graham has been getting experience all year, as has May. Worst case, the Twins slow conservative approach, against all reason, cost them a critical 2-3 wins, for no tangible benefit.
  7. Well, the Angels are on pace to claim that spot with only 83.5 wins, so it is possible we won't need 88.
  8. To be fair, I think using two Duffey starts to condemn scouting reports is perhaps a greater example of an over-reach based on a small sample...
  9. What's strange about it is, why now and not July? Or even the first week of August? The Twins were an even more likely playoff team at those points, our pen weakness was plainly evident, and I doubt that the asking price for Neal Cotts was any higher than now.
  10. "Engelb Vielma Is Making Noise" Probably just him pronouncing his first name.
  11. True, he will still be 2 years away from arb after 2016. Twins have historically been pretty gun shy from early extensions, though -- they even waited until the most obvious extension candidate in the world Mauer was eligible for arb and already won a batting title. Would be nice to see some more aggressiveness locking up elite talent early, even if it is ultimately only $5-10 mil savings. It would be a good sign for this FO.
  12. Is anyone really asking that we sign more starters? I haven't really seen that, except trying to flip Nolasco for an upgrade like Shields. I think plenty of people voiced reservations about committing that many resources to #3 upside starters. Each deal wasn't so bad on its own, but they probably needed to draw the line at some point, maybe put the resources towards a run at an ace if none was developed internally.
  13. The difference might not be evident in total money, but just whether he is willing to sign such a deal at all.
  14. Rule 5 is fine. Teams regularly carry a Brian Bass, Swarzak, Robinson, Nunez type anyway. Graham isn't the problem, it is the rest of the pen and its mismanagement.
  15. Incorrect. He could be placed on the DL, but he can't be sent down. The 90 active days requirement is to prevent teams from stashing Rule 5 picks on the DL all season.
  16. Oh look, May got one out today, with a 1 run deficit. How cute. Hope he can vulture another win...
  17. John, I accept that bullpen plan under normal circumstances. But these were not normal circumstances. O'Rourke was facing RHB in a close game in the 7th. Our other options were mop-up Graham and Achter. To let them blow a 3-run lead to the heart of the order in the 7th without using May was criminal. Nor am I sure why May had to be limited to 4-5 outs, tops. I think he recorded 8 outs or so in his last outing, despite not being particularly sharp, with 3 full days of rest since. In a close game against the Yankees, I would sure as heck rather try throwing May for 8 more outs if he was able, than let Graham throw with the lead on the line just so I could limit May to 4-5 outs.
  18. The Johan trade was with the Marlins, swapping Rule 5 picks. He had to stay in MLB his full rookie season in 2000. 2001 he saw his first AAA time.
  19. John, how were they "forced" to use O'Rourke and Graham when they did last night? May was on 3 days rest, as many days rest as Duffey had on Saturday. I haven't been able to confirm, but was Molitor saving May for a later inning? If so, that is massive bullpen mismanagement...
  20. No. It's easier to increase a .037 ISO by 16%, because it is already so low, than it is to increase .200 by 16%. The difference in the former is literally 1 extra base over 167 AB like Vielma had in the first sample. The difference in the latter would be about 5-7 extra bases in the same sample. A common example of this is batting average. A hitter who is 0-for-19 will increase his AVG by .050 with a hit in his next AB. Another hitter who is 9-for-19 will only increase his AVG by .026 with that same lone hit in his next AB.
  21. .128 ISO isn't a slap hitter. Eddie Rosario had a .137 ISO in AAA this year. According to MILB, Buxton's "GO/AO" ratio is basically the same at AAA as it was at AA this year (0.64 vs 0.58). 2015 comparable on the Twins MLB roster is Dozier at 0.60.
  22. Yeah, who really needs 40-man protection this winter? Here's the list of new 2015 40-man eligibles from Jeremy's org chart (hasn't been updated since the winter, but probably pretty good for this purpose): Bard, Luke Baxendale, D.J. Duffey, Tyler Haar, Bryan Harrison, Travis Hicks, Dalton Jones, Zack Melotakis, Mason Muren, Alexander Polanco, Joel Rogers, Taylor Valera, Rafael Vielma, Engelb Wade, Logan Walker, Adam J.T. Chargois wasn't on the list, I guess he was injured so long. Duffey's already been added, but otherwise, I think only Rogers, Chargois, Baxendale, Walker, and Vielma are doing much of anything at their current levels, and Rogers might be the only one who'd be a likely Rule 5 pick. Not a lot of holdovers distinguishing themselves either (Levi Michael, Alex Wimmers, etc.). Given the FA and chaff currently on the 40-man, there shouldn't be a roster crunch this winter.
  23. John, Duffey would have been ineligible to start Saturday until Hughes went on the DL. He wasn't optioned out until August 6-7, and he couldn't be recalled before 10 days unless someone went to the DL. So the original plan for Saturday was probably May / bullpen game. Which they then had to move up to Friday to accommodate Duffey (who will still be one day short of normal rest on Saturday). Funny you bring up Pino and Walters as examples of more disappointing past patches, when both were called up ahead of more promising pitchers in May and Gibson (Walters in 2013, at least). Hopefully Duffey does not become that footnote to Berrios, although the wild card race we are in will magnify this decision more than the Pino/Walters ones.
  24. Invoking Revere and Sano sure seems like a reference to height.
