  1. Soccer? Who cares. Now, if the kid hit a dinger, Dad sleeps on the couch for a week!
  2. The Twins made a trip to the Kimbrel auction with a list and a budget. Chicago, with those 12 blown saves, were panicky buyers. We'll all get to see what they bought in the coming months, and over THREE years. Chicago can assume that risk. Minnesota can't. Good article. Now write one on the Ryan Presslys of 2019 that might bolster the Twins pen at the turn.
  3. Agreed. The Kimbrel move, provided he's got the juice, can help set up the late July moves. A ten-game lead in the Central provides the luxury of time to evaluate internal talent (+Kimbrel who should be in form by then), while taking a longer analysis of external trade opportunities.
  4. With payroll flexibility of $11.7M over last year (2019 = $119.7M, 2018 = $131.4M), I say raid this cookie jar first! Sign Kimbrel to a one-year "proove it" deal. Keep the prospects on the top shelf, out of reach until the trade deadline.
  5. Keep the catchers coming! I like the Jeffers/Rortvedt "embarrassment of backstops" philosophy, along with past and present commitments to shortstops and centerfielders. Up-the-middle positions players are key. I, for one, would like to see Shea Langeliers (catcher, Baylor) the Twins first pick on Monday.
  6. If not "positive" it's at least "standings-neutral." Chicago kept Cleveland at .500 with a 10-4 victory last night, their fourth in a row. Carrasco gave up 6 runs. Now the Pale Hose are 27-29. Another Sox victory at Guaranteed Rate Field tonight means that Cleveland and Chicago would be tied for 2nd behind the Twins, who still still enjoy a 9.5 game lead in the division on THE LAST DAY OF MAY! Pinch me.
  7. Wasn't "The Rusty Scupper" down on the 494 strip in Bloomington running a promotional during September? Something like: *Dinner and drinks before the game! *Ride "The Scupper Sloop" to & from Met Stadium! *Tommy Kramer autographs cocktail napkins at the bar after the game!
  8. Yes, I agree. Arreaz's hot streak, given Schoop's 1 year rental, and Pineda's expiring contract, given his production as a 5th starter, are developing stories. A guy can wistfully remember a certain 21 yr old 2nd baseman called up by the Twins in April of 1967 who went 2 for 4 in his first game, and went on to hit .292 in 137 games. He had less minor league experience than Arraez. Could Arraez be our next Carew? How about Polanco? Or Lewis, or maybe even Gordon? Four days of promise won't drive these decisions, but it's fun to stand in the middle of this streaky stream and wonder where the current will flow in July, October, and beyond.
  9. Pineda: 5th starter with a 4-3 winning record (Twins are 5-5 in his 10 starts). Not much more the Twins can ask for, from the back end of the rotation. This must be the trade deadline priority. Pineda's contract expires at the end of the season. Upgrade in July to a top-tier pitcher under team control through the 2021-22 horizon. Until then, if Pineda can get to the end of July with an 8-6 record, our Twins will be catbirding a seat way on top of the Central, perched for a deep playoff run. Arraez: Schoop is on a one-year deal. The Rookie is playing three positions, hitting .583 with Nick Gordon and Royce Lewis right behind him in Rochester and Ft. Myers. Polanco, among the best hitters in the league, is signed through 2023. As fun as things are now, I am almost more excited about how the middle infield and rotation will fill out over the coming months, and how these developments could set the stage for competitive baseball in Minnesota over several years.
  10. So much to like about this game & this team. But,being old-school, I just love Odorizzi's 2.38 ERA.
  11. "Tater Brigade!" https://theathletic.com/984362/2019/05/19/very-very-special-night-for-our-offense-shorthanded-twins-continue-record-onslaught/
  12. The Arreaz call-up reminds me of Polanco's call-up in 2014. Schoop is an unrestricted free agent after this season. Too bad that there isn't a team option for 2020. Lots of middle infield options: Adrianza, Arreaz, Gordon, Lewis, Polanco, Torreyez. 2019 is an extraordinary proving ground for 2020, and Arreaz has a shot. Good luck, kid.
  13. Chance and Cannon King, Larry's sons, were drafted by the White Sox. Chance in the 38th round (2017), and Cannon in the 37th round (2018).
  14. The metrics on Pineda are fascinating, for a #5 starter over the first quarter of 2019. .245 BAbip when he wins, .362 BAbip when he loses. Blake Snell-like swing-and-miss stuff. -0.3 WAR... Team record of 4-5 in his nine starts. Bottom line: Playoff teams have #5 starters whose records hover around .500. The top of the rotation creates the separation by winning two (or maybe three) for every loss. Perez (5-1), Gibson (4-1), Berrios (6-2), and Odorizzi (6-2) are doing just that, and then some. This is the spot that gets upgraded as the Twins approach the trade deadline. Until then, I feel good about Pineda's production, at the bottom of the rotation. In poker terms, Pineda is a "hold" card in a five-card hand. In July, we "deal" for a new card, and raise.
  15. Riddle me this, disgruntled batfans: I get back north late after taking my son to the game for his 16th birthday. We scored great tickets. The weather was beautiful. Our team climbed to 12 games over .500. Before turning out the lamp, I spent 10 minutes complaining to my wife about the bullpen. Finally, she's had enough. "But honey, didn't your team win?"
  16. Yes, but. I think Sano makes the 25 man roster stronger. He'll hit more bombs than Gonzalez. For now, I'd like to see Sano DH, until Cruz's wrist heals. That would keep Marwin at third for now.
  17. Gonzalez was a Hoover tonight, picking up everything on the left side of the infield. And a Howitzer too.
  18. Send down Hildy and call Glen "The Hobbit" Perkins out of retirement. He's rockin' that Amish beard!
  19. I know this guy. Took my Grandma to TGI Fridays last Friday to watch the Twins. She's a big fan. I couldn't forget the hat. He was sitting at the end of the bar by our booth. When I got up to order a beer he had a coupon next to him. Clipped from the back of a Cub receipt: "New Sizzling Entrees Starting at $10." Bargain shopper, that guy.
  20. Yes, if/when the Twins make the postseason, there will be a place for the "face" to emerge in that place in time known as "the clutch." Until then, there's a guy sitting in the Twins clubhouse, at Joe Mauer's vacated corner locker. He need not mention his 1.016 OPS in 41 postseason games. His leadership--his "face" need only count in the admiration and respect of 24 other men who share a locker inside that clubhouse. The understated, ever-present face of this franchise is Nelson Cruz.
  21. Astudillo .870 OPS rhb Castro .848 OPS lhb Garver 1.106 OPS rhb Unheard-of production from behind the plate, and have you noted the slight uptick in the rotation since last year? Might have a little bit to do with who's calling the game. Castro is squatting on a surgically repaired knee. Astudillo and Garver inherit the catching duties in 2020, for now. And who says Astudillo is a poor pinch hitting option? Pinch hitting is about making consistent contact, moving the runners over, and providing OPS. Adrianza, OPS .470. His switch hitting is a plus, if he can hit and not get struck out by Chris Davis. Watching Marwin fill in at short is not as much of a pending disaster as having Ehire looming at the end of the bench at the end of the game with his bat in his hands. Cave goes, then Adrianza, of maybe a pitcher. Sano needs one more shot at Winterfell. We want him to grow up and claim the title, Lord of the North.
