  1. Nice - takes some of the pressure off Hughes. Sure looks better than a rotation where Diamond, Correia, and Pelfrey are your top 3.
  2. Actually, after hearing his press conference, in spite of my previous rah rah post, my next question is, why do I bother with pro sports? Really, I'm a grown man. The better part of me calls me on the absurdity of it all.
  3. Okay, some of you take your baseball and the Twins WAAAYYY to seriously IMHO. Torii chose to come back to the Twins. Reportedly he left money and/or years on the table, to come back to the Twins, losers of 90 games a season since forever. Yeah he's older, not even good a fielder any more, probably won't hit as well, I don't care, and I don't care about the Pohlad fortune; they can afford it. What has had me smiling all day is a great Twin chose to come back here and try to help rebuild the specialness of a team that had it in spades back in the day, that "played the game the right way." Souhan's story about Puckett opening his wallet to a young Hunter, that's what has been missing, real star-power AND personality that can influence young guys to work harder and have fun too. No way are the Twins worse off having this guy back in the fold. Somewhat off-topic, but the Edmonton Oilers are proof you can have all the glorious prospects in the world, but without the proper mentorship, they founder. I am hoping Hicks and Arcia will be the first beneficiaries of this, then Buxton. I think of it as an add to the coaching staff as well. Anyhoo, baseball is a pleasure and pastime, and getting back one of my favorite Twins ever is more a cause of celebration than despair. Please take this as it is intended, but there is an emotional side to the game that gets lost in stats and advanced stats and uber-advanced stats. Feel good stories should be enjoyed even if the numbers don't add up.
  4. I think next season will be boom or, if not bust, at least meh for Trevor. To give him a big deal now would be a heckuva risk imo. He's been improving, like a prospect and former 1st rounder should. I'd love to see him make the Twins regret not doing a big deal this off-season, and just take it to the next level. The Twins can afford to err conservatively at this point, and reap the rewards of a successful 1st rounder who developed into a star later. Sure they might save money signing him now, but if they wait a year and he explodes, they still have a star under team control. Dammit, that's why Target Field was built, so we wouldn't have to penny pinch the stars in our own fold. I think the nibblenuts mentality has to change; the dough is there. If after the next season Plouffe has peaked or declined, cut the cord; he still seems on the upswing, so I'd go with the flow. Same with Dozier. This isn't like the NHL where you have a salary cap in effect. There is no moving target here, except an owners willingness to put a winning product on the field. As for selling high, I don't believe in selling productive big leaguers for prospects unless the team is in a winning mode and the heir apparent is MLB ready. There, I'm done.
  5. Torii, being the competitor he is, will likely go where the wins are. Texas makes a lot of sense for him, as he lives there. As long as he feels he can play, he probably will chase that ring before becoming a good-will ambassador and nostalgia piece for the Twins.
  6. Minnesota fans have thin skins. Twinkies? Viqueens? Woofies? I used to frequent a hockey board where Wild fans would go ballistic if someone referred to them as "Minny."
  7. As many have said, it depends entirely on the quality of the original ideas; losing Gardy and Anderson will be a big enough change. If you are questioning guys like Guardado and Glynn, or even Molitor being added to the staff, you are over-thinking this.
  8. He could be pretty good in that role if healthy. So many times he got tagged in the 5th or 6th inning. If he could let it all out over 2 or 3 innings, he could rock. Like Swarzak, and wish him well.
  9. What the hell does a "bench coach" do anyway? Take over after the manger gets kicked out?
  10. Nice read - thanks for posting. Instruction at point of need is key for people to listen. Like what I've heard about Allen so far - now how about the Twins announce something official.
  11. Trying to make all pitchers conform to a single philosophy sounds like a bad idea. I'd like a coach to try to maximize the strengths of the individuals, even if it involves two entirely different approaches with two different pitchers. It's like trying to make David Ortiz hit the ball to the opposite field.
  12. Bernar He is the Michael Russo of baseball. Adds some relevance to the cross-town paper.
  13. I guess Ryan can't win.... Twins dont have much for lefties; this guy moves near the top of the class.
  14. I remember when the Twins let Hunter go, the comments at the time at the Twins sites of the day were along the lines of, "enjoy that 36 year old Hunter when the contract runs out stupid Angels." Well that 36 year old hit .313., posted an .817 ops, and drove in 92 runs. He isn't your average late 30s ballplayer.
  15. Most of these reunions make no sense, as we saw with Bartlett and Kubel. However, I think Torii could be an asset to the organization next season, and after his playing days. Although I know lots of you hate the "insider" aspect of Twins ball, even if an individual was only affiliated with them decades ago and for just a few seasons, I like it, provided it is the right people you hang onto.
  16. His suspension is a big red flag for me - is this the behavior of someone "battling his tail off" to be the best ball player he can be? Nope. Floating on talent isn't a characteristic upon which to build a great MLB career.
  17. Torii can still hit though, certainly better than any of our current outfielders - I'm not adverse to him coming back at all. Never wanted him to leave in the first place.
  18. Could end up being an expensive dice roll.
  19. Exactly - 3 years in Rochester doesn't make him an insider after 25 years in other organizations.
  20. Fooled me! Dammit, it's November, not April....
  21. Living in New York would be a blast for a wealthy man. I love going there. Thankful it wasn't the Yankees. I would hate to see Cuddy in that regalia.
  22. Once in a blue moon you'd get a pack where the gum was soft and fresh - good times. That was also when they cost .10-.25 a pack...
  23. Molitor might be that smart, silent kid in the back of the room who didn't want to rock the boat, and waited for the perfect moment to break his silence. I don't think Molitor would be as conniving as to help Gardenhire's demise along so he could grab his spot, but i think we will learn a hell of a lot about this man in the coming year. He's been painted as a quiet, cerebral man, and we may see an alteration in that picture. I'll say I was surprised by his demeanor when interviewed during the Wild game vs. Pittsburgh, the other night. He seemed to be in party boy mode, which I've never seem from him.
  24. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Souhan was bullied as a child, and now takes his revenge as an "adult" from the bully pulpit. I'll confess, I am as much a hockey fan as a baseball fan, and anytime Souhan writes about hockey, it is an even bigger trainwreck of ignorance. Souhan, like most generic columnists, is a football fan, then a basketball fan.
  25. Some small amount of continuity wouldn't be bad for the team. Molitor, and Bruno provide that measure, and Cuellar and Steinbach could provide more. Brand new bench coach and above all pitching coach would be a breath of fresh air, and base coaches as well. From the player perspective, I like the fact there will be some familiarity, but an influx of new blood is necessary as well.
