  1. Some thoughts. Was the 2012 draft really considered 6-8 deep? I had the impression that Buxton was clearly the highest upside and that Appel was the elite arm. At that point, other guys were considered great but not like those two. The Nats got exceptionally lucky, IMO, to happen to be rebuilding when Harper and Strasburg fell into their laps in the draft. Their success has been undoubtedly aided by it. Never tank. Maybe it's the way I was raised, but even the thought of throwing away games, even if it meant better draft picks (whose success and development are NEVER guaranteed) absolutely disgusts me. Losing is never acceptable. Ever. You put your best foot forward and try to win with what you have. If this were the NBA or NFL, where draft picks are surer bets and can make an immediate impact, you might have a better case for dropping a few extra games in years like this. In baseball though it's really unfathomable. edit: I find it highly unlikely that the Twins finish this season as only the 11th worst team in the league. I see them in the 6-8 range, at best.
  2. Interesting read. I've always felt truly sorry for true Yankee fans, the ones who don't act obnoxiously and appreciate the subtleties of the game. They are easily overpowered by the douchey fans and can't really establish a separate identity of their own. As someone who has lived out east for awhile now, I've roomed with both types of fans. I hate the Yanks with a passion, but I still feel sorry for the silent minority of respectful fans who will always endure initial bandwagon skepticism when introducing their fandom to someone else. There are no bandwagon Twins fans where I am. When someone learns about my affiliation, they know I'm serious. It's a special luxury that I dearly enjoy. Yankees fans will never be able to know it. That being said, I still enjoy bantering with even the most close-minded NYY fans.
  3. Great to see this, I know a lot of people are really high on this kid. There's only one thing left to be said here... http://cdn.meme.li/instances/400x/32353960.jpg
  4. Great to see that result from May, especially the 9K's over 1 BB
  5. Why the hell has Doumit been batting third?
  6. Thanks so much for this Jeremy, I'm following these signings like a madman
  7. I spent some time studying the impact of TV contracts on MLB franchises for my Sports Business class when I was in undergrad. You can message me if you'd like me to send you my final paper from the class on this issue (that felt narcissistic). Here's what I can say off the top of my head. The current TV contract between Fox Sports North and the Twins is estimated to be worth between $27-29M annually. That's a lot of money, but it's also abysmal in comparison to other teams' deals. To put this comment into perspective, the Dodgers' recent TV contract (the largest driving force behind their sale price) was worth $7 Billion over 25 years, or about $280M annually. That number should put the Dodgers' recent spending spree into context. Teams like the Yankees have TV deals that are or will be well into the hundreds of millions annually by the end of the contract. The Tigers make somewhere around $40M a year annually. This is probably the most overlooked facet of professional baseball, and arguably the most potent in terms of allowing teams to spend freely, especially without a salary cap. The Twins are ranked 15th in terms of market size (Nielson rating), but should probably rank much lower due to remarkably low cable/satellite subscriber numbers. Is there anyone to blame here? Not really. Hopefully whenever the Twins can opt-out/the deal ends they can get a better deal and try to funnel some of that revenue stream into FA signings/retaining talent.
  8. Agree with what the other guys said on this, but I'd also add that there is the benefit of not allowing another team to draft him after and throw extra money at him. You get the additional benefit of playing "defense", though that was certainly not the top objective.
  9. Most these kids come from relative poverty. For a lot of them, baseball is more than a game- it's a way to offer their families a better life. It's all about the money, and quite honestly, that doesn't bother me at all. Good for them. I would be absolutely stunned if the Twins topped Chicago, Boston, LA and Texas to get this guy as a FA. I'm OK with that, given the large sum we have to spend on the international signing period.
  10. What kind of wild speculation are you willing to make here? I guess Stanton must be taking something too. Is it possible at all to have a great power tool without using steroids then?
  11. Well said, I'd agree that those guys are much, much higher on the certainty scale than others. That comment was more directed (generally) toward our pitching prospects. After May's struggles and Meyer's injury, added to the youth of everyone else, I'm still incredibly nervous about ending up like the Royals and not being able to develop pitchers. I mean this without being negative, because I do have faith in our personnel in the minors, but for whatever reason I'm personally disposed to err on the side of caution
  12. So you are OK with steroids, just as long as it's accepted publicly? First off, not even close to everyone used them. That kind of mentality is downright insulting to guys who hit for power the right way like Griffey Jr., Frank Thomas, Thome and others. The era is littered with crooks who abused unprescribed steroids, and you can't absolve them just because more guys were doing it back then.
  13. Hearing Vin Scully call it was absolutely priceless. With that said, and I'll try not to make things too personal, I believe Mark McGwire is at best an indelible, filthy smudge on the history of the game
  14. Exciting writeup, but it's really tough to believe that all of our prospects will develop like we hope. They are just that- prospects- i.e. not a sure bet. I try to temper my expectations because I know that some of these kids are either going to get injured, lose the mental side of the game, or just never put it all together. It's sad but it happens all the time, even to "top prospects." You can't just expect 100% return from these guys. I hope 2016 will be our year and I wish our guys nothing but the best. Just be careful- prospects will break your heart, after all.
  15. Thanks a lot for this Seth, glad some of the other talent is getting attention. I personally cannot wait for Kepler to return
  16. I'm seeing mixed reports on Gonsalves. Is this a guy who we expect to mature physically a little bit and maybe gain a few ticks/ or get a better feel for his breaking stuff? Law calling him "not projectable" is curious, as he is just a high schooler and could easily gain some weight/ power to his pitches
  17. Hope it's just Meyer needing some rest. It would be nothing short of absolutely devastating to lose one of the few arms in this organization with #1/2 stuff. At the end of the day it is impossible to have too many arms in your system. Get well soon Alex
  18. I'm really firing off questions here, but what's the penalty for going over the 5%? Is it something like hanging up the GM by his toes?
  19. I actually really like Navarreto's profile for a 6th rounder, but do we think we can sign him?
  20. Are there any expected signability issues with either Gonsalves or Slegers?
  21. That's really tough. Hopefully he remembers this day and uses it as motivation going forward, no matter where he ends up.
  22. Would anyone here rather have Windle than Eades?
  23. I know scouts get different takes but how does one guy say he lacks depth on his curveball while another calls it a "hard out pitch"
  24. With the history.... how is he even a safe pick? He ends up mentoring guys at Low-A?
