  1. Before long Gardy will probably move Hicks down in the order til he catches on. Swap spots with 2nd base probably.
  2. I'll give Gardy +1 on that win. And it could be the biggest win of the year. We need to stay close in April. I really wouldn't have been surprised to see us start 0-6, but that's past us now.
  3. So who gets off the goose egg first, Parmalee, Dozier or Hicks?
  4. Totally agree here. I'm down on Plouffe big time and could see a change coming if there's a short string.
  5. I've liked what I've seen this spring out of Pettersen. He's fielded well and has good at bats. Hits alot of line drives.
  6. I spoke with Nick Blackburn this morning during a minor league game. He said he'll start throwing next week. We talked about some of his pitching teammates from last year and all the problems that continue. I asked about Carl Pavano. He said he talked to him two days ago. Pavano's had some problems, as most of us know, having his spleen removed. But after that he developed a serious infection, and recently had half his pancreas removed. Now he's got another serious infection he's fighting. One can't help but feel sorry for the guy.
  7. Maybe not the season, but this game probably is ova.
  8. That was a good read! I remember an opening game in April back in the '60's when it wasn't nearly that hot, but felt unusually warm. I was in the left field bleachers and Calvin only had one beer vendor out there and he ran out. The guy in front of me left his wife on a beer run and came back 3 innings later. As he went to sit back down he spilled both of the beers. I thought he was going to cry. The whole left field bleachers were chanting for beer the last 4 or 5 innings, to no avail. I also had Lee Stange tell me how cold the pitchers were on opening day out in the bullpen in 1961. They were still working on the stadium and stuff was laying around, so Lee and a few others gathered up some 2x4's and other wood and started a fire in a big drum. The next day Calvin had some heaters out there for them.
  9. I watched practice this morning, and then most of the game, Ft Myers vs Cedar Rapids. Berrios looked as sharp as usual. That kid can pitch. But the most interesting watch down here is Buxton. In the first, he tried to go from 1st to 3rd on a bunt. Didn't make it though. Then he hit one up the middle, just to the right of 2nd base, and stretched it into 2nd. He really can fly! The last at bat I saw he hit it over both fences in right for a homer that I retrieved on my way home. He was running fairly fast around the bases and Dougie M was hollering " when it goes over the fence, you can jog". He probably was jogging, he's that quick. Only one more game left, tommorrow.
  10. Oh how a few days have changed things down here. Pretty sparse at the fields now, but I'll be there today. Kepler told me a couple days ago as he came by with his arm iced that it would be another week or two before he gets going again. He hurt it throwing. He told me the same thing a couple of weeks ago, so it's lingering.
  11. Not hindsight whine, maybe you do that. Balfour struck out the Yankees on 9 or 10 pitches. I was screaming for him to come out for the 9th inning until someone got on base. But whatever, Gardy didn't handle it the way I would have.
  12. I've seen fans from other parts of the country down here talking about how good a manager Gardy is, the last a group from St Louis who observed he didn't have much to work with the last couple of years. I'm still bitter with how he handled post season with Santana, and for pulling Balfour for Nathan to lose to the Yankees. He was down for the minor league games this morning and saw Justin K twice, ground out and line out.
  13. Diamond got rocked today in a minor league game. I only watched 2 innings and he got no help from Sano. Sano touched the ball 5 times and recorded one out with the help of Vargas at first tagging the runner. No runs given up in the 1st for Diamond, but 4 in the 2nd and only 1 out recorded when they called the inning and switched sides. And with runners on the corners, yet.
  14. Ramirez crushed a bomb today against the Red Sox on field 3 that I thought was going to hit a car out on the road. It was tracking perfectly but I never heard the thud. It went over the car! What was really interesting was my buddy went out and retrieved it from the high school and it was an officical MLB baseball. Arcia hit a foul that cleared the fence in right and I picked that up on the way home. That ball was a Midwest League ball. After the article on the differences in the balls, (seams), I wonder why both types were used in the game. And the kunckleballs the Sox pitcher was throwing just wore out his catcher. About a third got by him it seemed.
  15. At least most fans won't be to disappointed if we falter again this year, with this team. If we could win 75 games, most would be pleasantly surprised. I hope to be pleasantly surprised. And I'll be somewhat pleased if I can stand to watch past the 5th inning more often this year.
  16. I feel what will be intersting is to see how Florimon and Dozier handle struggles. With young players so often the struggles in the box are taken onto the field and vice versa Probably every player playing has gone thru that. Hopefully both can develop very short memories and just play in the moment. As far as Carroll goes, I really enjoy watching him play the game. He knows it inside and out, and others can learn by watching him. He plays hard on every play. He'll get alot of playing time and I wouldn't be a bit surprised alot of it comes with Florimon and Dozier also on the field.
  17. If that happens, whoever is struggling developes a blister and is shut down for a couple of weeks. Don't count on Gibson til fall unless all the wheels fall of in the rotation.
  18. Pelfrey pitched well yesteday, after having a rough first inning giving up 3 hits and a run. If Morneau's arm was just a tad longer, he'd of been out of the inning. He was throwing consistantly 90 on the gun. His breaking stuff looked good and he used that alot after the first. The lowest I noted was 74mph, and mixing it up had hitters off balance.
  19. I think the guys 30, 40 and 50 years ago would need time off now too. And guys are certainly in better shape now. But those guys years ago would need time off just doing what today's players do in the weight room to be in that shape.
  20. You certainly do. And I'm probably the strongest supporter of not trading him and trying to extend him. That was the first thing I planned on letting TR know this spring. His answer was "do you want the Morneau of last year? He's got to do better than 50 some rbi's" I mentioned how he was hurt last season, plays with injuries, etc. And that he's healthy this year and will have a great season. TR hopes so. For one thing, I can't see any way you can get anything even close to acceptable in a trade. Forget money, I mean players. I don't want more prospects, you've got a former MVP, a great glove, and a ton of potential for the next few years in Justin. Plus a great guy in the clubhouse and in Minnesota. He'll save a number of errors from 3rd base this year, besides the rest of the infield. And that goes forward also. I do think he'd like to stay here also, and just may take less money to do so. For sure he'd like to stay with Mauer. You just can't go get another Justin Morneau, and he's the one to build around for the future. I just can't see any plusses in trading him, only positives in keeping him. I hope he has a big year, and forces us to extend him here where he belongs.
  21. That's great news. Clock, schmock, I may not be alive in 2020. The future is now.
  22. It was mentioned to me by one of the workers here that Danny Rams hurt his shoulder and they wanted him to have surgery, but he declined, all but ending his playing here.
  23. Edit: Throw Deduno in the mix and perhaps Corriea could come down with bilateral hangnail or something, also. I don't know how Pelfrey pitched last night, but he too could be dl'd the way Hendriks and DeVries are pitching.
  24. That was a fun read Seth! I've seen them all, from Lenny Green on. A buddy of mine was at the game when Jim Eisenrich had his meltdown in the outfield, and he said it was just hard to watch. I remember my early years in Ft Myers, and the first time I got here way before spring training, and seeing a bunch of guys out playing on one of the fields. They just looked like a bunch of guys out having fun playing baseball. I even thought of getting my glove and joining them. One kid seemed pretty fast in the outfield. Turns out to be Rich Becker. It was a perfect storm for him, as the Twins were weak at that position and he did get a few years in. Later, when local guys from Twins and other teams would work out early, I turned into the shagger. Buck Buchanan would come and unload a couple of 5 gallon buckets of balls out of his ride, and they'd go play. I would retrieve the balls hit over the fence for them. I did that for a number of years. I remember one year doing that, and spring training officially opened that day. I'm retrievng balls hit over the left field fence and Al Newman started hollering at me. AJ said "it's okay, Al, he throws them back". Of course a few clean, new balls always seemed to end up under some foilage, only to be gathered up a few hours later, lol.
