  1. The 00s Twins were able to achieve some success with Kubel and Cuddy plodding around in the corners. That was considered a hitters park. TF, in case anyone forgot, has the exact same dimensions. The left field power alley, for example, is still shorter than the ones in Cincinnati or Arlington. The right field alley is still shorter than the ones at the Cell in Chicago or Miller Park. And, most of us would agree, I think, that the OF defense improved after Schafer replaced Willingham, and again when Hicks was called up on Sept 2 and started spelling Parmelee/Arcia. However the BABIP and ERA has gone pretty much unchanged since that time. At some point we need to accept that the roster just isn't that athletic. But they can hit. Get the best hitters into the lineup, I say, and shave off the runs by positioning them better.
  2. With the way this lineup has gelled in the 2nd half, I vote "all in" in 2015.
  3. What is the current health status of Pelfrey? Guy has been off the radar since about May, or maybe I'm just not paying attention. Is anyone in the know?
  4. Miguel Cabrera http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20070217194952/puppet/images/c/c0/Baby_Sinclair.jpg
  5. Making a call - Vargas gets a double his first PA
  6. Nobody seems to be answering this pretty obvious question. I gave it a shot in an earlier post. Basically, if the Twins sign a starting pitcher (or 2) they can bump everyone in the rotation down a peg and fill a hole (or 2) in the bullpen while they're at it. With respect to Meyer and May -its been sited a million times before but I'll repeat it here - look at the Cardinals. For years they've used the bullpen as a step between AAA and the starting rotation and obviously have had a lot of success building strong pitching staffs top to bottom. When you look at the injury history of those 5 pitchers, its definitely possible, likely even, that they'll log some time on the DL and whoever got bumped will (assuming he's healthy) get his shot then. Nolasco - mysterious elbow issues at least twice in his career (that we know about) Gibson - TJ elbow Hughes - back issues Meyer - shoulder issues last two seasons and a pretty damn ominous end to 2014 including steep loss in velocity Only May has been healthy, but if you look closely he too showed a dip in velocity that he only recovered in his last start.
  7. Reasons I would like to see a top flight starting pitcher signed this offseason 1. The high end starting pitching crop is by far the best talent in the FA class. 2. As bad as the Twins pitching has been (again), the staff has been, outside of Pelfrey, very healthy. I don't think it would be wise to assume they'll have the same luck again next year. In fact, I think its probably smart to plan for at least 1/5 of the rotation coming down with a devastating TJ type injury. 3. The bullpen needs an overhaul. By signing a starter, they can slide everyone down a peg and filll at least one hole there.
  8. Liriano? No. Headcase.
  9. Rusney Castillo debuts tonight in the Red Sox vs. Pirates game. Liriano pitching too.
  10. He's not hitting as many fly balls as he did in the first half. This probably accounts for both the reduction in homers and the rise in BABIP. I don't know if its by design (coaching) or if its a result of being pitched differently. Possibly both. Personally I would like to see him return to the low average, patient, 40%+ fly ball batter he was in the first half. Hopefully he can make the adjustments to get back there.
  11. 21/24 strikes on the curveball. My guess is the only reason he has just 2 swining strikes was because not too many offered at it. Being able to throw that get me over pitch for strikes seems to be a key for Nolasco edit: Just checked brooksbaseball - he got 13 swings on it so only 8 non-swinging strikes. Fewer than I would have guessed.
  12. Gahhhhhh Why can't we have nice things!
  13. What? How did a flyball drop for a hit with these outfielders?
  14. Heh. Before tonight, Kinsler was 4/6 with 3 doubles against Nolasco
  15. How about Kennys the Refrigerator Vargas? That's not taken is it?
  16. Jammed his throwing shoulder diving for a groundball
  17. I think it probably has something to do with Nolasco being a junkballer and Suzuki being better at blocking pitches. I agree it would be nice to see Pinto play again soon
  18. Well the outfield should be able to cover some ground tonight. But can they get any hits against Cy Porcello?
  19. If you buy a stock at $10, sell at $20, and watch the stock push upwards to $30, you're still up 200% edit: ah, I see what you mean. Extension - I don't see it as very likely since the extension years would probably for ages 37+, if you assume the 4 pitchers we're talking about will get 6-7 year contracts. The question I'd ask about the player option is this. After projecting age related decline and salary inflation, how much money do these players stand to gain by re-entering the market in 3-4 years versus 6-7 years? I suspect its on the order of 40-50 million for a couple of these guys, and possibly a lot more.
  20. Zach Greinke has a higher OPS than Aaron Hicks, both on the season and for their careers.
  21. So... why's Pinto out? Anyone heard? edit: I read there he was hurt but has anyone heard what's wrong, exactly?
  22. Evidently I can't read a schedule. Yes May is going tomorrow and isn't jumping ahead of Hughes in the rotation.
  23. Maeda baby
