  1. I'd make that trade. If, like the Royals trade, it puts the Twins in a position to improve by 15 games in year 1 - in contention through the last week of the season, followed by a wild card berth in year 2, and be left with a similarly strong core and strong farm system in place (and at least 1 comp pick coming)... yes, absolutely I make that trade.
  2. Almost too close to call. Both teams playing really well, and not sure how KC can continue to cope without Duffy and Ventura. I'll go SF in 7 edit: I guess both players have given the thumbs up. I'll go with SF anyway, on the back of Bumgarner and their bats.
  3. Not every prospect has a firm value. If you can dream on a guy, GM's will bite. I'd suggest LHP prospects are best for this. The Price, Peavy (twice), Gio, Miggy, and Teixeira trades exemplify that.
  4. Seems to me for the shot clock to work as intended, they'll have to deny batter requests for time. Because a tired pitcher will just go into the set position and pause til he's caught his breath, and batters aren't going to stay tensed that whole time willingly. Some simple ideas that might shave a few mins off games 1. In the postseason, keep commercial breaks to 2 mins. Most are 2 but there are some, particularly late in games and after the God Bless America in the 7th inning, that run longer. 2. Chuck God Bless America 3. Prep balls better 4. Work on challenge system. Right now a manager has to stall for a minute before he gets the thumbs up or down. Maybe if its that close, umps should get the call beamed in before making a ruling. We're going to wait for it one way or another. Might as well get it right the first time.
  5. Here's how the shot clock works in the AFL http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/10/18/video-watch-the-pitch-clock-in-action-in-the-arizona-fall-league/
  6. That's not really the comparison I'm trying to make. I'm comparing the "core" prospects aka. Rule 4 draftees to the amateur free agents aka. Latins within each system. The Royals and Twins systems are similar in that to date, the Latins have matched, maybe exceeded, the domestic talents. At some point we have to move from "sometimes top prospects take time" to "we got our rankings wrong."
  7. Maybe the industry is just biased. We all assumed Hosmer, Moustakas, Butler, and Gordon would emerge to form the Royals core. But only Gordon was worth more than 1 WAR this year. Instead, its been every bit as much the Latins - Perez, Escobar, Herrera, and Ventura who have brought that team to the promised land. Its not hard to see the Twins future playing out similarly. We've already seen top 10 guys - Hicks, Gibson, Wimmers, and Hendriks, stall if not bust. Meanwhile a crop of Latins has come up and produced pretty much from the word go.
  8. Hicks 1-2 (single) with 2 walks yesterday. http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_10_16_leowin_marwin_1&t=g_box&sid=l135
  9. A few days old but Darren WolfsonVerified account ‏@DarrenWolfson The #MNTwins have spoken w/ Cuban FA OF Yasmany Tomas' camp as recently as Monday. Clear they like him. Problem: so do about 10 other teams.
  10. Actually, by WAR, KC has more production from trade acquisitions than Rule 4 draftees
  11. I hope nobody holds shares of NFLX right now
  12. First, welcome to the forums. Second, Buxton and Sano are two players. Young, unproven, recovering-from-serious-injuries, haven't-touched-AAA players. I don't care if you're waiting on Chipper Jones and Kenny Lofton, its a horrible idea to put the entire operation on standby over two lousy prospects. Thirdly, if you watched the games last season you found out a lot of the pieces are here. The iron is hot. And its not Buxton or Sano applying the heat.
  13. A success rate of 42% vs. 27% overall. The season rewards bucks and brains. The postseason rewards bucks, brains, and luck.
  14. The D-backs had an awful year but were .500 in 2012 and 2013. The Braves finished 4 games under .500 but won 96 games last year and have been in the playoffs pretty much every other year going on 20 years. Why were their managers of these two clubs fired? Two GM's overseeing clubs in markets similarly sized to the MSP area? Same reason Bill Smith was fired. $100m+ payrolls. TR is going on year 3 of futility, but he's doing it on the cheap. That's what matters.
  15. There are some really annoying things about mlb.tv. For one, they still haven't figured out nexdef. There's still no live pausing or replay, as they claim (at least, its never worked for me). I would gladly put a game on pause for an hour, do stuff, then watch the game commercial free, if this feature worked. Of course, you have to keep an eye on the timestamp at all times because if the window has to reload for any reason (which happens multiple times per game), you'll be re-started at the live point in the game. Or, if you're watching an archive, you'll restart at the beginning. This never happens on amazon, nflrewind or netflix. Also I'm caught in a weird dilemma where if I watch the game on a firefox browser, the flash player will crash about once per game, if not more. But if I watch on chrome, frequently the player will give me the circling load screen of eternal doom and I get nothing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong but there do seem to be a lot of bugs and it requires a lot of micro-management to make it work in my experience.
  16. Yes h/t Chief
  17. Looking back at old reports, the consensus among some (most?) scouts was that Meyer had ace upside but was only 20/80 to start/relieve. I don't know how much that alters the trade's equation, if at all.
  18. Santana to CF Plouffe to SS Sano to 3B Mauer to LF Vargas to 1B Pinto to DH ... Hicks to RP
  19. Anyone know if Hicks is going to Venezuela this winter?
  20. He's been around forever and we still don't know what he is, where he fits
  21. Interesting read on some new technology to measure UCL stresses http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2097866-the-sleeve-that-could-save-baseball-exclusive-look-at-new-mlb-technology I hadn't realized the Brewers have had no TJS's in the last 5 years.
  22. As long as a washed up Joe Nathan is closing games for the Tigers their bullpen is going to blow games. Would Gardy be the guy take him out of that role?
