    I think its an interesting throught experiment regardless of what stat you choose. If a manager says "you're going to bat in decending order of (fill in the blank stat)" then it takes the decision out of the manager's hands and puts the onus on the players to achieve whatever that stat values - XBH's in the case of Slg%, walks in the case of OBP, everything in the case of wRC+, etc. It would be interesting to see how each batter changes according to the system - perhaps Mauer would start pulling the ball or Arcia would take more pitches, etc.

    Might be a harder sell with players but yeah, any rate based stat that correlates well with team scoring. Heck, Slg% would be as good as anything Santana Vargas Arcia Hunter Plouffe Dozier Suzuki Mauer Hicks*

    In keeping with that, I wonder if the best lineup is simply to slot guys in decending order of OBP. Might even be able to sell that to the players if anyone moans about being moved down in the order. "Want to bat higher? Then quit swinging at crummy pitches and get your OBP up." That method would look like Mauer Santana Suzuki Dozier Hicks* Plouffe Hunter Vargas Arcia

    That seems reasonable. Conservative, even, if Moncada is the talent eveyone says he is. I thought the bidding would be more competitive seeing as the rules will probably change in the next CBA.

    I assume a portion of the 100% tax on the signing will be re-distributed via revenue shsaring, no?

    I admit if I were manager, I'd have a hard time telling Santana he's going to bat 8th or 9th because of his BABIP. Its definitely one of those areas where Molitor's commitment to analytics will be tested. If the overall impact of lineup construction is negligible, my guess is he'll stick with what Gardy did last year (that worked). Santana-Dozier-Mauer, etc. But as to the question who *should* leadoff, Santana comes in 3rd for me.

    I'd lean Dozier over Mauer but only barely. As Mauer hit last year he had only a ~.020 point advantage in OBP, I imagine Dozier's superior baserunning skill makes up for that. If Mauer gets back to a ~.400 OBP I would flip em.

    Isn't that what a 2-strike approach is for? I guess I don't understand why you would throttle anyone back until they get to two strikes. And are you going to blog on this development?

    No, but it does show actual facts regarding Walker's swing tendencies as opposed to hearsay, even but it is limited to 2 strike counts. FWIW his BB% was 7.9% compared to a career average of 6.8%. So unless his swing and miss tendencies changed in 3 ball counts, he did not see a significantly higher proportion of them last season.

    I always thought players with extreme contact tendencies could benefit by adhering to a red light-green light matrix. If Walker's whiffing is putting him at a disadvantage, give him the red light! On the opposite end a guy like Revere might have benefited from a red light since he never swung and missed. All his balls went into play and he never got deep enough into counts to draw any walks.

    Can't help but notice that the guy scouts say has durability concerns due to his lack of size has been among the most healthy/productive pitchers in the Twins system. Hope it stays that way because this kid's stuff is electric.

    Maybe that applies to the Pirates but if you look at the Royals' trades since the late 90s (specificallly, the Appier, Damon, Beltran, and Dye trades), they were all about turning pending free agents into top 100 prospects. Exactly the sort of moves a rebuilding, small market team is supposed to make, right? But it didn't work. They sent 0.5 seasons worth of Beltran to the Mets for the #85 prospect (from the A's), Mark Teahan: 2.4 WAR, 831 games. 3 years of Jermaine Dye for Neifi Perez, ranked #33 at the time (2.6 WAR, 1403 games). They sent a half-season Johnny Damon rental to the A's for the #15 prospect at the time, Angel Beroa (again from the A's): 1.0 WAR in 746 games. They got 3 prospects for Appier in 1999 who combined for 3.0 WAR in 197 games. It wasn't until Moore flipped that strategy on its ass that they finally turned things around. edit: Correction, Beltran was traded with a 1/2 season of control left, not 1.5. Back in the days when you could get a supplemental pick for rentals.

    You need to change the thing by your avatar from Cynical Oldie to Captain Koolaid Around here we assume the bottom was 2011-2012 when the farm was a wreck but Vegas and most other 3rd parties seem to think we haven't reached it yet. I can't escape the fear that maybe the Twins are the next Pirates / Royals franchise.
